I'm assuming you have a strong rudimentary knowledge about this stuff. If you DON'T, you should take a job as a janitor at a recording studio (seriously) and start from the bottom up. If you do know some things and feel that your talent lies in this area, all schools are expensive. I have personally toiled at The Berklee School of Music in Boston as a professor and would have to say that their MusicProduction & Engineering Department is probably the finest in the world.I'm guessing it costs $20k a year, so buy some overalls and take that janitor's job if expense is a strong deterent. You might also get in touch with Berklee and dind out if you qualify for any scholaeships or loans, Good luck!

I'm learning all that with a business degree at Belmont University in Nashville... I want to double emphasis in Rec-Tech production stuff and Business management.... it's a business degree infused with your choice of emphasises (sp? emphasie? emphaseezes? LOL) ranging from production, TV/Radio, marketing and management. TONS of internship opportunities down the street on Music Row, school has a really good reputation and you learn a LOT about both your emphasis and how the industry works. Expensive, though!

I really like this idea that i can get answers to my questions from professionals and people who have experience in what i'm trying to learn. I've found allot of info on these pages that i couldn't find anywhere else. Thanks for the ideas and responses.

Hey all you interested in going to school for Music/Recording/Music Business, etc.
This month's copy of MIX (sorry, Mitch), has a list of virtually ALL the relevant programs in the Country.
Check it out at your local newsstand, or at http://www.mixonline.com

Suppose I'd better come clean - tomorrow I'm meeting with Tom Misner , head of SAE, to look at editing his new Recording Manual for his annual 14,000 students!! No doubt he has made a small fortune , sorry big fortune, out of it but i wonder about it's relavence.
I personaly feel that the music forums that have emerged recently (such as this one) are far more informative than any course you could take at a school.
I regularly reply to questions on the Homerecording.com and realise that within the files (available through a simple search) in these forums is all the info a newbie needs and that the internet is showing the potential to be the new learning medium of the next decade at least.
Your thoughts please
Cheers John

there is no school like experience of life itself. i took a recording school course and wouldnt recommend it to anybody. if you know a bit going in, there is nothing you can learn there that would justify the cost. if you dont know enough and can justify the cost, its better to get a job as al said, as a janitor in a studio. at least your are getting paid.

Well I guess it's different strokes.
John, I went to the SAE in 1986 and loved it and for me it lead to a career. (which I wasn't looking for at the time) I just started out doing it for my own interest.
One of the best things about the SAE as compared to the other options here at that time was that there (once you acheived a certain level) you had use of the studio by yourself. I did weekly all night sessions (I was working full time) and recorded lots of local bands and performers for experience.
There were very limited options for internships here, especially for someone who couldn't talk the language.(the audio language that is)

Yeah, I went to belmont too. It's pretty good, if you are looking for some business too...they are very thorough. I graduated in Dec 98, and I think they have changed quite a bit since then, but at the time the recording program was a little unplanned, and not taught in a very organized way. However, I think they have expanded their programs, and they now have a Belmont West Program, through which you can spend some semesters in LA and intern there...so you get both Nashville and LA...
Internships are going to be great for you, it doesn't matter how low you start. I have found that sometimes it's easier to get something a bit more practical at mid level studios, and not at the "cream of the crop"...then again, I have only been at a mid level studio. They do let you touch stuff a little sooner, though.
I really wasn't intending to go for the whole business side of it, but as I progressed in school, I saw how it gets to be really important in shaping you as an all-around professional, especially if you want to eventually get involved in the business side of it...which everyone does to some degree or another...
But anyhow...

Thanks for that Brenton and Juergen. Tom is moving the headquaters of the SAE to Byron Bay (my home town) and is setting up a masters course here which will involve a big studio (neve ex studio 301 in Sydney) and lecture theatre etc. Believe me you couldn't find a better place to have to spend your time. Byron Bay is one of the world's loveliest places, surf, sun and clean pure air and beautiful women.

If I may offer something related to education, whatever you decide to do, have something to fall back on. Nothing would be worse than to spend a fortune going to "Full Breeze" and end up working in a studio that only records Byron and the Polkaphonics.
I am a strong proponent of majoring in something you can take anywhere, such as business. Once you have that B.A. or M.B.A or whatever, focus in on what you really like.
