hey peoples, lately i've been getting this vibe that people who sing and don't write their own songs or play an instrument aren't really musicians and are low on the music totem pole. my first question is.. am i the only person gettin this vibe? maybe i'm krazee and i'm the only one. i thought this might make an interesting topic.

I have witnessed (and recorded) M-A-N-Y vocal performances by singers who do not play an instrument - some don't even read music! In those vocal performances I have heard more "music" that plenty of trained instrumentalists WISH they could pull off.
Years of experience has taught me to look for "music" from almost any source - not just instrumentalists.
Braoden your horizons, man - LISTEN!

i didn't mean to give the impression that i was one of the people who looked down upon vocal artists. i am a singer who has just started writing her own songs in the past 3 years. i only know a little keyboard and guitar. so of course this topic is important to me. i know that i ( and many other vocalists) put just as much heart and soul into a song as any other musician does. i was just trying to get a feel on what other people thought about this particular subject. =)

Singers are definitely musicians. The only time I have a problem with a singer is if the cop the prima donna act. Although other instrumentalists amy cop this same attitude, I think that they feel more on an equal plane with fellow instrumentalists. It can sometimes be tied to the fact that the singer, by virtue of his/her position onstage, is consistently looked to as the band's leader. Two examples I can think of that refute this are Led Zep was definitely Page's band, and The Who, where Daltrey consistently deferred to Townshend.
