hi, i'm planning on doing a demo tape soon and all the songs will be covers ( although i have my own stuff). I love to mix styles and i would love to show that on the tape. For instance, i love to mix soul, trip hop, and flamenco. should i sing a song for each of those styles or should i concentrate on doing songs that only complement my voice but doesn't really reflect my style? i really want to make a positive and lasting impression, so of course i want to do this right. any feedback is good feedback. thanks.

What's the goal of your demo: to get jobs, impress friends, record yourself for posterity, evaluate your music, develop your recording chops, give as a gift...?
Once you know that, then you should choose the material and presentation accordingly.

I don't understand making a demo of cover tunes, unless it is purely for getting gigs as a cover act. Then you'd try to be a human jukebox. Otherwise, I could see recording maybe one cover which you so revamp that you make it your own, and the rest original material. If you're looking to get a record deal, then they are looking for originality.

it's to get a record deal, but they asked that the songs on the demo be covers, which is fine with me because i have no one to play the accompanyment for me when it comes to my own stuff. i can just use instrumental versions and fade out the main vocals when it comes to the song i'm covering. for right now i'm doing what i have to do to be noticed. i think i know the answer to my question. thanks to those that replied.

"I don't understand making a demo of cover tunes, unless it is purely for getting gigs as a cover act." the reason someone would make a demo tape of just covers would be if they're just a vocalist, they don't write their own songs, they just sing. therefore they'd have to use someone else's songs until they can get songs written for them. some agents and companies understand this and perhaps that's why they asked for cover songs. just to make it easier for those people who love singing and making music just as much as someone who can play 5 instruments, sing and write their own stuff. i don't mean to wig out on anyone. i just needed to say that. i'm startin to get this vibe that people who display vocal talent only are scum and less of a musician than people who write and play an instrument. i think that's an unfair and bad rap. it takes just as much heart to sing and convey the right emotions in a song. but that's just what i think. thanks again.
