Although I truely believe "digital internet distribution" is the future, I still have some reservations about the tracking of downloads. It's fine if you administer the downloads yourself. But, What happens when you entrust the monitoring to say mp3.com, IUMA.com, etc? I trust performance rights societies even less. (jeez this guy trusts noone). How about encryption technologies? In other words, is there a reasonable way to make sure the artist gets credit for the music he sells?
Thanks,

I've been watching the whole Napster thing with interest. I think there's a real easy way to solve the issue. I think that the commercially released stuff should not be given away on the site. However, the record companies only release a finite amount of the stuff that the artists perform. Why not turn Napster into a site that offers live performances of acts. The majority of the people who collect tapes, etc. of this type already have all the commercially released product of the artist in question. In other words, the labels can't make any more money off of them. I think that in a cooperative venture between the artists, the labels and Napster, that by sharing these recordings (any artist who says that they don't have at least some soundboards of their sets are lying), the public, the artist and the label and Napster, and its ilk, can all benefit. The public gets more music, the artist's catalog is not compromised, the label doesn't lose sales and Napster is supplied with additional product. Everyone is so busy trying to protect their interests that they are ignoring a way to benefit all.
