Al your last months EQ artical about the Indie Label dissapearing was on point. I have been debating this very subject with my friends who work at the major labels for years who have been brainwashed by the "Big Machine" into thinking as long as it sells who cares about the quality of music being put out im getting paid. There are a few indies labels run by qualified individuals left but I think in the not so distant future once the industry gets through this fork in the road (the net)and everybody gets bought out down to one big major record company a new indie scene will be imerge by Artist/Producers only seeking to put out their own music. Maybe it will be that ten year old i saw getting on the school bus with a trombone (haven't seen that for years)... anyway look foward to more good articles and advice Peace ES

the majors are the schwag dealers. sell a lot of bags but for those in the know, there are always the kind dealers who dont sell as much and its more expensive but definately worth it.
i have an independant label thats merely a collection of musicians. i can do everything practically in my basement. the profit is high so you dont have to sell as much. but you do have to contend with a high signal to noise ratio.
but with things like napster, we have quite a number of DL's every day. spreading like a virus.
i dont think there can be only one major label, that would be a monopoly but for the most part, it already is with 3. something is brewing i think and will change everything. especially when all this technology falls into place. this is just the beginning.

Guys, the majors will fall because of things like this:
During a commercial from wrestling, I accidentally switched on The 25th Anniversary of Arista Records or Lets All Reward Clive Davis Again; His Induction Into The R&R Hall Of Fame Wasn't Enough Compensation For His Eifel Tower Size Ego. They then doled out a cast of his "accomplishments":
Barry Manilow Kenny G Whitney Houston The horrible songs of the 90's that Aretha Franklin struggled into Puff Daddy Etc.
In my world, we string people up from trees for doin' stuff like that. I've obviously lived too long

Yup, Clive does have an ego bigger than yours AND mine combined, and he does rewrite history often to make himself the center of the universe, but remember during his days at Columbia, he did sign Big Brother & the Holding Company, as well as Santana, and the Electric Flag, Chicago, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen.
And of course, screwing Dylan when he turned 21, by locking him to a great new contract - great for Columbia, anyway. He started at Columbia as their contract lawyer.
