Hey Al,
It's great to have you here - thanks for the opportunity to interact.

This topic is not exactly about the "biz" - but I have to ask.

"Child is Father to the Man" is one of my all-time favorites. There is some sort of timelessness about it- the songs, the sound, the arrangements.

Two questions:
1) Was the end result one of those happy studio accidents that just happens or did it really end up as you had it envisioned in your head?

2) The arrangements are great. With all that is written these days about songwriting, recording ,mixing, mastering and related technology it seems that arranging is very seldom discussed. Perhaps you could devote a column or two to the fine art of arranging/voicing. Are there any books written on this that you would highly recommend???

Watch you sugars and carbs!

Cheers,

Ken

And question #3:
How much did John Simon contribute as the Producer?

vis a vis Child Is Father......

There is an expensive CD "gold" version that collects the demos as well as the entire album on one CD. They are currently getting ready to put that out on budgetline with SOME of those demos included since the gold one is now out of print.
If you get a chance to hear the demos, then you get an idea of what i had in mind, and what producer John Simon did to bring my dream into focus. It couldn't have been done as well without John, thats fer sure. I learned my whole Producing 101 from watching him produce that album. An unsung genius that lad is.
As far as the arrangements go, they were pretty much mine. Freddie Lipsius did a great job orchestrating them for our modest horn section. They certainly wouldn't have been as strident without Fred. Arranging for me is a God gift. I dont know how or why I know what I do, but I do, and everytime I do, I thank God for that gift.
