Hi Al (can I call you Al?). I have a question about the inner workings of the engineering/producing side of things. Some people have been extremely helpful, but I keep coming up short with this part of the equation:
In looking for runner/assitant work, are there two versions?
Of course one being employed by a studio. But is it common for freelance producers and engineers to have their own assitants traveling with them?
If so, which one do you feel is more valuable in building a career? Obviously, as Jules pointed out to me, one downside to being a "personal assistant" is that you only work with one pro, as opposed to many. But working that closely with a master might really be a great experience.
And if the Personal Assistant job does indeed abound, what do the studio's assistants do when their crew shows up?
Thanks for the columns, Curt

Curt - You're talkin about apples & oranges here. An assistant engineer works for a studio, begins as a janitor/runner, then rises through the ranks to full-fledged engineer. A personal assistant works for a producer and just watches his back - i.e. books studio time for the boss, tidies up behind him, makes and receives his phonecalls and asks him lotsa questions when appropriate. Hope this helps you Doctor Al

Thanks- every little bit helps, because I thought I was talking about Macintoshes and Granny Smiths.
