In my humble opinion, 10 % of your advance is fair if they just get you the deal. Think of it as a one-time finders fee. If they're a lawyer and they negotiate, then they get their hourly fee plus they remain your lawyer and share in your anticipated wealth by having you as a client. If they're your manager, then they get their managerial percentage for life: that is, if they get you your deal and they manage you during the time your first two records are released, in most contracts they are entitled to their cut even after they are no longer representing you. Is that wild?
Hope this covers all bases for ya!

so would 10% still be ok if they are just sending your music to someone they know at a label and not your manager or a lawyer? sorry for the simple questions but its something I have been thinking about.

Actually if they're just sending the tape to someone they know at a label.......well, I would do that for a close friend and not expect anything in return. If you sent a heartfelt thank you letter and a magnum of Laurent Perrier Gran Sicle if you got the deal, my eyes might even tear up a little...
.............B U T ..........................
if it's STRICTLY BUSINESS - 10% is just as nice as the above. Okay ??????

Resurface,
By the by, in the Uk lawyers aren't allowed to 'take a percentage' just a fee. So over here they are less involved between acts and A&R in terms of offering A&R new acts. Here A&R will talk to anyone associated with new acts, but it's a smaller country.
Lawyers boasting of getting A&R guys their job and organising their employment contracts, give me the creeps, it's all too connected.

hi thanx for the reply a guy that is working with some bookings for a band I know wants a % to send there album that I produced to a small label. Sounds sad to me cause really we are talking so small time. but every one wants something small or large. my dad is the shoe guy I own a mid size studio in vancouver canada and didn't go into the shoe biz but I did make clogs at one point and can make some shoes but who wants to make shoes when you can own a studio.all the best jonathan
