Morning Peeps!!!
Overcast, very cold and looks like it's just about to snow!!!
Snow definitely predicted tomorrow.
Things to do today, but will get most of the boxes of books out of the garage tomorrow.
I have taken receipt of an adjustable electric planing machine (hand-held) with which I hope to shave off the very last of the poly finish from the Moridaira P bass body. It looks like it might be mahogany(!) - got some Tung Oil for that.
I've already renovated the neck & it's ready to go. Just got to figure out the pickup options.
I have the original passive P pickup which is actually very good indeed. I also have an EMG Active P which Trucks is evaluating at the moment.
I also have a Bill Lawrence USA humbucker I could put in at the bridge.
Finally I have an Artec 2 band pre-amp which could be fitted.
A few options there.......
G.

Hi guys! Not been around much -busy at work. Now I have 2 weeks' holiday.
Looking forward to the Lowdown Forum London Jam on Monday night; pity none of you guys is close enough to come along.
Had a very nice debut gig with the Balkan 'Luna Kalamata' on Monday. The acoustic bass guitar did a great job. Thanks for checking the clips, Geoff/Lee. Here they are for anyone else - http://www.youtube.com/feilik

Excellent! It's an interesting style of music and your lines on the acoustic bass are meshing with the melody very nicely.

OK, back. I got an email from a Japanese woman living in London who wanted me to try out for a band. They'd been looking for a double-bassist.
I took the Wal fretless and the ABG to the audition and they preferred the ABG; the leader called the sound cuddly. I was a little mystified at first as the Wal is worth thousands and I play it like it's part of my body and the Crafter acoustic bass guitar was a reasonably inexpensive instrument that a singer had bought me for a specific project. I was still struggling with the relatively high action. I didn't think the acoustic bass guitar was a credible gigging instrument at that point.
I've come to realise I was wrong and come to love the instrument. The music the band played at first was mostly Greek, with some Bulgarian, French and Turkish music - traditional folk music and some more modern stuff.
The band rehearsed weekly which is not something I usually ever do. I'm become a bit of a strict 'rehearsal for a big paying gig only' kind of guy after hundreds of successful gigs without rehearsal; but they rehearsed near to my house and they were a nice bunch of guys and the music interesting so I went with the weekly rehearsal thing for a while.
The singer flaked. We found another 2 weeks before the debut gig. We also decided to add a guest clarinetist at the last minute as the new Turkish singer would not be able to learn the whole set in time and the bulk of the set would be instrumental (fortunately the violinist knew all the melodies.
Also, given the last minute change we decided to add some more Turkish and Macedonian tunes that the singer knew and a couple that the clarinetist knew. Then we started working on new Klezmer and Balkan tunes at rehearsal the day before the gig.
So the set featured Cigdem on vocals on 4 tunes; Izzy on clarinet on 3 or 4; Mutsumi (leader) on violin; Tommo on mandola; Patrick on darbouka and yours truly. It was in a pub very close to where I live.
The next step is for them to find some more gigs and probably an agent or two. They want to carry on weekly rehearsals but that's not how I work so, provided they're happy, they can rehearse every week while I practise the parts at home. I'll rehearse if there's a major gig like a wedding, of course. I think they need to spend a little time making the MySpace more functional too.
Anyway, it was a whole mess of fun . . . and a refreshing change from the normal cover gig!

Cool story, Phil! Very different music than I'm used to hearing....most of the folk I've been exposed to on this side of the pond has been celtic/english/roots american stuff. So, it's cool to hear some new stuff. Very Jazzy, in a way....

Morning Peeps!!!
It snowed here last night!! Melting fast now in the sun & blue skies, but still very cold - Arctic blast again!!!
Should be getting some boxes of books out of the garage today.
I've started on the P body with the electric plane & the sander - looks much more like Ash under the chemical-effected timber.

Just came back from a nephew's wedding over on the South island. Lovely place called Nelson. The marriage comes rather late in the piece since they already have a 12 year old daughter, but then that's the modern world for you
Great wedding ina Chinsesy looking park in town, terrific party afterward but I'm not sure I really like little kids very much. We all travelled down as a family (4 couples with four small kids) and I'm really glad to be finally home and away from all those screaming kids. Also, one of my sisters-in-law, who travelled with us, has recently proclaimed herself "the matriarch" of the family and spent a lot of time trying to boss everyone around. Which would have been fine if she's actually been good at organizing stuff, which she isn't.
But it was a great weekend, if a tad hectic!

Hey Geoff, how much do you want for this P-Bass pickup? Sounds great on the westone. I have only hooked it up with the battery and the output jack, but even that sounded great. Karen has also now decided, after seeing the bass together with white primer on the body, that she would like it white, and not black.. lol.. Good job I hadn't bought the black paint yet.

Cloudy, cold.
OK Lee?
Preparing to go to Abu Dhabi tomorrow. I'm told that it has the most expensive internet access in the world, so I'll likely be offline for the week.

Morning Peeps!!!
Blue skies, some cloud, some sun, cold.
Flying off from Birmingham International at 9.00pm tonight for Abu Dhabi, for a week.
The story behind this, is that this is the rhythm guitarist from my very first band back in 1961/62, Neil Tolland.
He got in touch with me after I put an ad in 'Friends ReUnited' over here.
We haven't met for 45 years, so we'll have a lot to say and we'll be playing a *lot* of guitar.
As I said, I won't have much chance to be on-line, but I'll check-in now and then.
G.

One of you guys have to make the London Lowdown Jam sometime. I jammed for 6 hours yesterday and then went down the pub. We 4 bassists (one of whom also plays drums), a drummer and a keyboard player. I brought the piccolo bass as well as the Wal and the ABG for variety. We had some congas too.
These were the basses present:

For rigs we used an SWR rig, an Ampeg SVT Pro rig and an Ampeg B15 combo along with my Acoustic Image/Epifani rig and David MP's Markbass F1.

It's a Peavey. It belongs to my drummer, Pierre. I have it on a long term loan. I tuned it an octave up like the bottom 4 strings of a guitar. It's a fairly inexpensive bass, but well built with a neck through design.

Line Up:
DaviMPires' Spector, my Peavey piccolo, my Crafter ABG, Davo-London's custom built Cliff Bordwell, Davo's beautiful jazz bass with an epoxied board, my Wal, Tim's Ibanez and Tim's frankenbass PJ fretless.
Interesting that only the youngest guy brought a five string - the rest of us all brought 4s!
