Morning Peeps!!!
Sun, breeze, clouds - not *quite* so cold. We should be getting some good old Atlantic weather soon - mild & rain. Yay!!!
As mentioned above, installed the Levinson Blade mid pickup in the Frankenstrat and am well pleased.
The SDS-1s are good - don't get me wrong, but are more suited to a dirty sound whereas I like clean. They are built like a P90 and have more mids & bottom than a 'proper' Strat construction. They were always a bit 'dark' to my ears in passive mode - needing the active mode to sound like a 'normal' Strat.
The Levinson is great passive & active and works better than the others with the Varitone - no idea why, as it is 6.8K, the DiMarzio TDS-1 is 6.8K and the Schaller S6 is 13.4K. So quite a spread and the Schaller & Levinson have similar construction.
They all are 'useable' in passive mode now.
The wonders of Guitaring!!!

mornin' geoff
Beautiful day out here, strong breeze, sunny in the mid 60's.
Preparing coffee for my day... arranging and editing Piazzolla's Verano porteņo for a guitar ensemble, then recording some intros for a Bossa demo, then ensemble rehearsal, teaching, then starting to mix the demo, possibly while having to help out printing address labels for wedding invitations.
...Looking for work in some sort of funk/R&B cover band to make $$$, but I'm afraid that'll take a while and w/ all the good players in this town even longer. Doesn't necessarily look promising especially since I don't know the standard repertoire beforehand, LOL!

I love Piazzolla's music!
Millo, I don't think it would take you long to pick it up.
Good luck with it,

Morning Peeps!!!
Overcast, dry, milder.
Re-did the nut on the fretless Vantage yesterday. It's ready to sell, now, along with the Hohner Jazz.
Looking at the project P bass now.

Good luck with it,
Phil Piazzolla's music is awesome.
The problem is distributing, copying and editing the parts (adding articulation, dynamics, etc.) is what takes time. I spent about 8 hrs yesterday working on Finale. We tried it at rehearsal and what the fellas could sight-read sounded good, so the work paid off. I had written the notes/sketched out a "plan" I wanted to use on paper throughout the weekend. Should be a blast to prepare/play now.
In the summer I'll arrange "Invierno porteņo" (Winter) so that when the Fall season rehearsals start we can work on that as well.
What I need to prepare myself for is getting back to playing the electric, and to playing funk/fusiony music.

Work, work, work... can't get it together to play bass. I do exercises, just to keep my hand in but there's no spark. Going through the motions. Gig in two weeks. Slight feeling of panic because I don't feel charged up like I usually do. Ho hum. Bass sounds like shit, I should change the strings. Can't be bothered. Crap rehearsal last week, momentarily moved to a smaller room, feedback everywhere. Yuk. Work, work, work. No pay until April the 21st. Get up at about 5:30am, come home at about 9:000pm most nights. Expensive part of town to work in, too. Problems with my eyes, eye drops every hour on the hour before the surgeon will even think of operating. Real trouble seeing. Work, work, work...

Morning Peeps!!!
Overcast & raining - but it's mild rain!!!!
Got started on the P bass project yesterday. Sanded & feathered in the flaking poly finish on the old Antoria neck, and partially re-crowned the frets. Did the whole fretboard with steel wool and gave it an oiling. Neck is good to go.
Body has been chemically stripped but looks awful. I'm pretty sure it's mahogany!! I'll do it with grain filler and try & get it sprayed to match my two Frankenstrats & Tele - deep cherry. I have a tort pickguard for it.

Hey Geoff!
Chucking it down here!
Looking forward to getting out and about a bit after a quiet spell: -the debut gig with the acoustic Balkan band on Monday (last rehearsal Saturday) -hopefully a Lowdown forum jam session on Monday April 7th - we're still trying to book a studio
It's been very quiet gigwise!

Phil, man would you like this EZdrummer program! I've got to think bass players would get tons of use of it, and with the Solo player in it, it would word great as a stand alone drum machine with tons of options for fills and meter changes, loads of interesting textures, and the good news it it's so easy to use!!!

Do you have shares? Only kidding!
I just have to sort out the cost.
The missus is a bit funny about me spending money on music at the moment as I'm having a scarcity of paid gigs since Christmas.
I need some gig money and then I'll lay it down on this.
Mind you, I'm going for an interview next week so if I get that job (more money, closer to home etc) . . .(but it's a long shot!)
Maybe I can talk her into it.

I've spent most of today playing around on MySpace, listening to good bands, crap bands, amazing bands and completely mediocre bands. Geez, but there's a lot of music out there.

Sonja met some Italian guy here who's into Neapolitan music, were getting together in a couple of weeks for a jam. I'm really looking forward to it, because I'd like to learn from him and import the new techniques into my band.
I hope he's into this stuff... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgVETyPRPR0

Always good to get into something new. We added a bunch of klezmer tunes at the last Luna Kalamata rehearsal and that was a lot of fun. Sounds good, Vince.

Just back from Shanghai. Had a lot of fun but the weather was not good, only one full day of martial arts. I spent a lot of time at Shifu`s house, his wife is a great cook-nothing like Chinese home cooking. I didn`t just eat like a herd of horses, I felt like I actually ate a herd of horses, I might fast a day or two this week. Finally got around to trying chicken feet, they`re not as bad as I thought. They`re not a lot better than I thought either. I had originally planned to buy a guitar but the budget just wouldn`t allow it, maybe next time. I did get a nice consolation prize though-Crossroads Guitar Festival 2008, 2 DVD set-Yeehaw! Also Dream Theater at Budokan-I think I was at that show, lots of piezotechnics (well NOW it`s a word) from John Petrucci.
Oh- A month or two back I happened to be going through my `friends` at soundclick and noticed there was one-now I know it`s not the point and everyone should be judged on the quality of their work-but this girl had that sparkle, like she was born to be photographed. I hadn`t really had time to listen to any of these folks, I just said, okay you`re a friend and forgot it. Just for the heck of it I went and listened to her two songs-holy CRAP, she can really sing too. I sent her a compliment on her voice and today I came back to my email and found that she had sent a very nice note of thanks, and that there was more music in the works. Good stuff, she could really take off at some point if she gets the right situation.

Hi Skip, Pity about the weather - the food - I can imagine!
I love chickens feet when they're cooked right, nice and tender and soft with the right sauce.
My young son absolutely loves them right now.
I'm thinking of getting into martial arts together with my son, when he is ready. I might try to find a class we can do together. I've never studied it, but I met a lot of martial artists when I was studying Cantonese.

Seeing as Birthdays suck, I decided to (very quickly!) do a little funk jam.
I would love to play this sort of thing with a sax and keyboard player (as well as a decent bassist).
