Best of luck, John! \:D

Well, we had a fruitful day today. A friend of Sonja's is on a house renovation kick and she had lots and lots of beams and general bits of wood littering her backyard. So we borrowed her electric saw and spent six hours cutting up beams for firewood (Winter's coming on).

Quite fun, really, but I'm knackered! \:\)

Morning Peeps!!!

Lovely morning here - blue skies & sun. the lull before the storm - literally!!!

'They' are predicting our biggest & worst storm of the year which also coincides with the highest tides of the year. Understandably this is causing some concern in coastal areas - and that won't be the end of it - there's a chain of weather systems coming in behind.

I'll lock myself in the garage & get on with it.

In Los Angeles, they've voted to ban woodburning fireplaces making them unlawful to use by 2011. As it is now,any new homes being built can only have gas fireplaces or the clean burning stoves for heat. I honestly don't know how this could be enforced & it'll wind up you will be allowed to burn wood if it's the only source of heat in the house,or you're low income. With the price of gas now,it could wind up everybody might be low income by then. Oddly enough,we've been looking into getting a clean burning pellet "wood stove" as the fireplace we do have just doesn't put out any heat. Allegedly, fireplace use just puts a huge amount of pollution into the air, never mind what the big refineries here are dosing out. Sheesh. There's a lot of local uproar over the issue.
It's another warm spring day, went to an estate sale yesterday..not much of interest but I did pick up a lot of piano music to sell at auction, some of which I posted already. We'll see how that goes.

We've had 'smokeless zones' over here for at least 40 years, but there is coal/coke based smokeless solid fuel available for burning.

This was to cut down on particle emissions as the smogs over here were getting pretty bad - that's all cleared up a generation ago.

I think burning any kind of fuel will produce carbon dioxide - in fact I'm sure it will.

Morning Peeps!!!

Currently sun & blue skies, but we're in the eye of the storm!

Actually we've missed the worst of it here, but the other side has still to go through.

Did good stuff in the garage yesterday.

Stripped down the project 'P' bass & will take the body for chemical stripping later today. It's old (60s probably) and is nitro, so it'll all come off. I'll probably refinish with Tung oil if the wood's reasonable, and if it's not I'll have it sprayed at the local car-paint spray shop.

I also returned the 'Tele-ness' back to my Tele which is back to sounding 'right' by removing the Schaller T6 and putting back the Fender 52 RI at the bridge. While I was doing this I tried another one of those little circuit-board 'Giizmos' - a kind of non-active Varitone.

It isn't really a Varitone - just a 5 pos treble bleedoff. It doesn't use a choke. I added one, however and found that a choke from the 3rd connection to ground made an interesting variation, but I took it off. I found the amount of treble cut from 1st to 2nd pos too much. It might work on a bass.

Replacing the coil-tapped DiMarzio PAF on the Ibanez Studio with a coil-tapped DiMarzio Super Distortion this afternoon.

Should improve the single-coil sound, which I use most.

G.

Bucketing down here!

Worse in the South West.

I left home in what I thought were waterproof shoes, 5 minutes later my socks were wet. They're still wet. The winds actually blew a small child into me at the bus stop.

Things seem to be calming a little now though.

Maybe they'll slow enough to pop out and get my cappuccino form across the road.

That blues jam thread is awful fun.
Must have another listen! Have you had a go, Geoff?

Did anybody hear my Greek/Bulgarian recordings on the music thread?

Cheers,

Phil

Yeah, we have areas like that in NZ too. I think Christchurch has banned actual wood-burning fireplaces. Here in Welington, though, it's always extremely, extremely windy so the pollution just blows away.

Morning Peeps!!!

Currently cloudy, sunny and breezy. The Big Storm pretty much missed us, but the South Coast & the West Country suffered, and there's another storm going through The North tonight which will probably miss us too.

I've done a lot of typing this morning.

I have to add some wire to the neck pup in the Ibanez today. You can read what I've done in the 'Cat's Away' thread \:\)

Had a nice long chat on the phone with Philly last night. Nice.

Playing mucho guitar, mucho loud. \:D Great!!

Plenty to do.

Morning Peeps!!!

Well, the second storm hasn't missed us and we're getting winds up to 75mph in gusts along with some pretty sharp and heavy showers.

Not much was said about this one. There was, of course, a huge brouhaha about any storm which threatens the poor sensitive souls who live in and around London, while if you are North of that, then who cares? It was ever thus.

Got the Ibanez Studio ST-105 going with the diMarzio Dual Sound turned round so the coil further away from the bridge is active, and it sounds great clean (mostly) on single coil and great dirty on both in series.

I'm picking up the chemically stripped P bass body this morning which seems to have mostly worked. The guy at the shop says there seems to be a bit of 'clear finish' left on the back.

My read on this is that whoever originally did this has sanded off the Poly finish on front and sides and left it on the back, then sprayed over it. I'll sand off what's left. Then we'll see what it looks like.

I think my next job though, is to finalize the brass nut for the Vantage.

Morning Peeps!!!

Weather seems to have calmed down. Certainly, it's breezy, but not stormy any more - and it's stopped raining & the sun's peeping out!!!

Doing a clean-up today, then I'm opening up the Frankenstrat to:

replace the push/pull pot - the current one's unreliable.
replace the bridge pup (DiMarzio SDS-1 8.6K) with a Schaller T6 (13.2K).
shim the neck a little. The hand-made neck is just a couple of millimetres shallower than a factory item and it sits just too low in the pocket. The saddle for the top E is bottomed out and the action is still just a smidgeon high for my taste.

Rearrange the birds nest of wires inside and make sure the shielding on the inside of the pickguard (copper) is properly grounded. I also have a set of Deam Markley Dimebag Darrel 10-42s to try. It is said they are a little stiffer. I usually use EB 10-52s.

Then a set-up.

Yeah, Reif. Saw the latest pictures on the CBS Morning News from up your way - to say that it's a lot of snow would be a massive understatement. I'm sure spring can't come to soon for you.

Weather here has been excellent - we are half way through March just about and the usual rain we get really hasn't arrived. Very pleasant. Sunny and mild. (Lots of fog this morning though.)

Got good news from my doc on Tuesday. This should be my last nine week chemo course for a while. My scans have been completely stable the last few rounds and he thinks we can start on a break after this last set. I'll have three months off, get scanned, and if things remain the same we'll go another three months, etc. etc.

So, a summer without chemo! YAHOO! \:D

Will post my comments on the recent new gear on the GAS thread hopefully today, with some pictures. I know the good Doctor has been awaiting my report.

Hope everyone is having a good day. And Reif, stay warm.

Morning Peeps!!!

Sun, some clouds AND NO WIND!!! Yayy!!!

Well, I've completed the work on the guitars.

Tele - replaced the Schaller with the Fender 52 RI - sounds like a Tele again.

Aria - fixed a long-time intermittent wiring fault. It's a nice little guitar, this, with its GFS P90s.

Ibanez Studio - replaced the bridge PAF with Dual Sound wired with active single away from bridge. Sounds really good. Greatly underrated guitar.

Frankenstrat - removed push/pull pot - never used it, really. Replaced the bridge Dimarzio SDS-1 with a Schaller S6 - much brighter - more 'Stratty'. Shimmed the neck a smidgeon and re-did the setup. Luvly!

So, I'm pretty happy with what I've got. Go too much, really - might let one or two go.

This time next week I'll be off to pick up Philly arriving back from Oz, so just got time to start working on the Basses!! Got too many of those too!!

G.
