OK, Here is the latest multitracked bass experiment. Four tracks - one that is flanged, one is distorted, one is just a 4 to the bar percussive string slap and one is a low, unaffected bass track using the Wal's active EQ - the last is the only thing that wasn't completed improvised a a first take. Two similar mixes. http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6155471 http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6155467

Another guitar driven little piece....drums are Terry Bozzio from Drumcore, I really like his stuff....I just drizzled reverb all over the guitar and went for that kinda I dunno, my best idea of what might be in a Tarantino or Rodriguez flick...with a bit of distortion on the guitar ...some MIDI guitar doing pads....it does not go anywhere....just backgroundy...ambient type stuff.
Kung-Fu Spaghetti Western Matinee
Paul and Phil, I will check your music out later.......sorry I have been recording and did not pass by here......I will listen after I get back from the supermarket.

That was fun, Lister. I would have gone for a deeper sounding bass tone to fill out the sonic spectrum - probably just these cheap headphones. Great guitar and pads - very filmic. Love that Bozzio track, I went to one of his clinics once, can't say I learned anything but it sure was fun!
Neat Paul. The songs are not quite to my taste (though the second is funny) but the playing and playing is neat indeed. Loved the whistling. She should scat more - sounds great when she does.

I now prefer the second of the two mixes of mine that I posted - where the 'bass' bass is slightly lower in the mix:
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6155467
Maybe I should take some ideas from this and refine them into something decent? - I so rarely do that - I just improvise and move on - hence lots of improvisations and solos and very few compositions.

Paul, Bald Ego, Phil good stuff...Phil I liked the theme you should build on it. The feel of it reminded me of early ECM stuff......John Abercrombie, Jan Hammer have you heard the album Timeless with Jack De Johnette....for some reason this piece reminds me of that album.
Yeah you are right I should have a deeper bass sound in the Kung-Fu Spaghetti piece. I was going for a super trashy guitar sound...just effed up with a lot of reverb and I wanted that Burt Bacarach bass sound...trebly and played with a plectrum...sort of 60's type of bass sound, I guess I just did not pull it off well......I will go remix it,maybe add some stuff to it....... thanks for the heads up!
I really like the idea of the blurred photo's through the windshield and the rain...moving the camera while the shutter is open etc...I might have to "borrow" that idea one day.....good stuff.
Nice work you guys.

Thanks Lister, My son came up with that photography concept as we came home from school across Blackfriars bridge in the dark and took the photos on my cellphone.

Ermmmm..... Where is my reply to Phil and Fumbles? Anyway, to briefly paraphrase it, I dig the track Lister. Phil I love the ideas you come up with, it would be great to hear you refine an idea further.
Will check it out later Ramp! :-)

Guys, I need help with my bands music. We recorded an EP and I would like your opinion about it. If you would check it out and let me know what you think. Becuase we are wanting to record again and I need some constructive criticism about it all before we try and go back to a studio. http://forums.musicplayer.com/images/icons/default/frown.gif frown

Good Verse & Chorus
I cant comment on production, because all I have are laptop speakers
I can only comment on one tune at a time and will post here for critiques
On the tune Waiting
CONCERNING THE INTRO: The intro is too long. Although the parts are good and flow into one another, I would just stick with the part that breaks down prior to the first verse
Most people don't have attention spans to handle long intros or even 16 measure solos
Where it starts to go heavy, there is too much of a disparity between how it goes from "clean" to "heavy" you need to bridge it somehow and gradually increase the dynamic. maybe take some of the material I suggested cutting out, inserting it there, but have it build in dynamics?
Also, maybe have those parts set in full out crunch mode, but with the volume rolled back on the guitar so as to fade your tones from clean to semi dirty to full out crunch?
The second verse, should have a semi clean/dirty tone
again build into the second chorus, but without the musical interlude
Bang right into it from the verse
After chorus 2 and before the solo, use the omitted stuff from the intro
Killer leads, bro
Nice break after the solos into the chorus
Good tune

Okay on the Tune Broken:
On the Intro, after the crunchy part, slam right into the verse.
You don't need to break it back down into the groove, that part was already stated It makes your intro just a little too long.
Now don't get me wrong, longer intros are good for live purposes, but you want to condense things for the public releases.
Live you could use the prt where it breaks back down before the first verse and have the singer tell the audience "after ALL of the crowds we've played for, you're definitely one of them" (insert smiley)
Back to the tune:
What are you crunchin' with ? sounds good
For your "pre-chorus" - SOmething tells me that you need to do the same as in the last tune.
HAve your "crunch mode" , but with the volume rolled back for a "semi" dirt/semi clean tone. Build the dynamics gradually into the loud chorus dynamic Come into the break down a little dirtier (semi) and a little louder and break it back down to the 2nd verse. Make he 2nd verse a little louder than the first (playing wise, not production wise). But have the parts totally clean over the vocals
I think the 2nd chorus & last chorus should have some harmonies. Monster solos, nice touch
cool breakdown after the solo, and the jump right into the loud w/no set up works for this part. I like the main arpeggiated riff after the last chorus to the end played crunchy.
Sorry if I am repeating myself, but this is just a way to "polish" your tunes

The tune, Underneath
The arrangement is very well done
I like the bass line on the broke down part of the verse in that it is distinct from the other parts and locks in well with the beat and the guitars
When the verse gets heavy on the main melodic riff, I am not sure if the bassist should dupe what the guitars are doing. I have laptop speakers only, so I could be wrong that he is duping and/or could be wrong that he shouldn't dupe if he is (insert smiley).
Try experimenting with the bassist playing a line that dupes the drummers kick pattern on the heavy melodic motive while following the Imi bVI, bVII progression
And then have him kick in in unison with the guitar line on the last one. It may or may not work, but I believe that it may be worth exploring
The quick breakdown part before the first chorus is very cool, but I think it should only be used once in the whole tune. Try kickin' into the chorus every time after that
The lead break before verse 2 should be played with a little more conviction and should be harmonized, in that it sounds like an intent statement
Again, try experimenting w/the bassist following the kick rather than the guitars almost like a funk concept in a way, but not necessarily a funk bass line Have him double up with the axes on the last one to drive it home into the 2nd chorus (w/o the breakdown before it)
On the bridge, the same thing for the bass following the kick pattern more so than the guitar line
Now here is total experimentation, which may or may not work
Have the 2 guitars play in harmony those melodic motives and variations of such which are in the tune, yet WITHOUT the rhythm section playing the groove
Have the bass and the drums hit only on choice accents while the guitars play the harmonized main motives/variations. Have the bass/drums increase the number of accents to where it eventually locks in on the groove
Cheers, Keep the Faith

Are you using BIAB '08? With the real drum tracks? I am checking out the 07 demo at the moment. Sweet bit of software.
