Alright. If you were sentenced to life inprisonment and were allowed to choose one album, who would the solo guitarist be on the album?
Mine would have to be Jimmy Page. Nothing gets the mojo risin better than the 'Whole Lotta Love' solo.

I've got to pick Pat Metheny. Endlessly inventive, massive harmonic vocabulary, diverse tone palette. I've heard him blow killer lines over chorus after chorus of Jobim's "How Insensitive". Added very tasty fills throughout Bruce Hornsby's "Harbor Lights" and "Hot House". Not just my favorite guitarist, but my favorite musician.

My choice would have to be Jimi Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland". It has as wide a variety of styles, sounds and tones as you'll find on any one album, all of it touched by genius.

django. his stuff was (mostly) recorded in the 30s & 40s, but no one can do what he did.
you said "album" though, can i bring the django 10-disc box set with 243 songs? then i could use a couple of the discs to dig out of the big house.

I second Django Reinhart. He's the greatest ever. Oh, man, those dates he did with Stephan Grapelli!
Jeff Baxter rocks, too!! Check out Jeff's playing on Steely Dan's "The Boston Rag" and "My Old School" - totally awesome! He's one of the few rock/pop guitarists who understands how to pace a solo instead of blowing his wad in the first three measures. Come to think of it, I'll be Jeff is a hit around the ladies...

I'd have to say it's a toss up between Steve Vai and Angus Young. I know those are two totally different players but one (Vai) is totally experimental and is able to solo endlessly in many different situations yet still keeps it interesting. And the other (Angus) plays with unbridled fury. He may play the basic pentatonic but he says so much with it. Maybe it's his attitude that makes his playing appealing to me also.
I have to give honorable mention to Steve Morse, he is a tremendous player! BillLonero.com

I'd have to go with George Harrison during his Beatle days. Think about it, every solo is different! He approached each song on it's own, carefully crafting a solo that fit the song perfectly. Changing guitar tones, techniques, effects, amps, etc. constantly. He never got locked into any sound for long. That's completely opposite from his sixties contemporaries like Eric Clapton for instance, who used the same tired, stolen Albert King licks on every song. (Not to mention petty much the same tone.) Harrison wasn't the most technically proficient, but he was the most creative...

Best? I don't know if there is such a thing as "best" when it comes to artistical expressions.
But Terje Rypdal is one of the greatest on gtr in my book.
Other greats: Mike Stern, Jimi Hendrix, FZ, Pete Townsend, Ernest Ranglin, Django, Neil Young, Prince, Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd...

O.K. I'll play this game once again.First of all if I was sentenced to life imprisonment AND given the choice of only ONE album, I would kill myself. HOWEVER, if they strapped me to a chair and force fed me with an IV, then: If the type of music was limited to rock, as you suggest ( BTW the Page solo that does it for me is "Dazed & Confused"- kinda like an out-of -body experience) it would be very tough but I'd have to go with Jeff Beck's "Truth". Some of the hottest rock guitar ever, the stuff that made him (and Rod Stewart) famous. An incredible line up of talent (Stewart, Ron Wood, Nicky Hopkins, the extremely talented and critically ignored Micky Waller on drums, plus cameos by Keith Moon, JP Jones and yes, even Page) and everything from acoustic folk to a broadway show tune! It flirts with classical and has a heavy dose of blues. Plus all the now commonplace guitar effects that were first heard here and a fantastic, in your face, stereo mix. Can't beat that for variety on a rock album. If the selection was more flexible though I might be tempted to go with the Django crowd(I have "Djangology" the 7 album(14 sides on vinyl) boxed set! Considering that it's life imprisonment, I might get a lot more mileage out of that!

My favorite all time guitar solo is "Trick Bag" by Wes Montgomery. He literally pulls out all his tricks in this uptempo organ trio tune. I've listened to it hundreds of times and I've studied the transcription until I could play it from memory. I love Wes! Second runner ups include many recordings from Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Django, Pat Martino, Pat Methaney, Stevie Ray Vaughn and others.

The best guitar soloist ever has just simply gotta be Kurt Cobain.
Serious, I gotta go with Joe Satriani who seems to be under-represented. Runner up is probably Jimmy Page. Sloppy, but damn if live recording don't give you the chills during Dazed and Confused or Whole Lotta Love.

Does one really want one's mojo to rise while in prison for life? Why is this a concern? CONFESS, CONFESS!
I'd be thinking about the "Best Guitarist to Keep Someone *Else's* Mojo from Rising".

Charlie Christian - good call!
I'd like to add Larry Carlton to my list. I heard him on the radio this weekend, and he blew the doors off of a tune with his solo. I admire guitarists who can solo like a horn player, not just hack out of bunch of guitar licks and tricks. LC has the jazz approach DOWN. It was like listening to Dizzy, but with a guitar "sound."

I think of a "soloist" in a different manner I guess, cause I was thinking Will Ackerman, Chris Proctor, Alex whateverhislastnameis, and Micheal Hedges. Along those lines. If you're talking guys who take leads in a given song, I don't see how you can say whos the best, maybe who you like best. Clearly its difficult to say a Bluesman looking for the one big note is any better or less better than the million note a minute virtuoso. Just my skewed veiw I guess.

By the time the sentence is half over, anybody would be driving you nuts-I`d work on a longer attention span first...but for an interesting, totally underexposed and original player, Jan Akkerman.
