Most of my guitars are either black or white. I have a couple of "natural" or yellow / brown finishes... along with a dark brown see through KOA, and a brown sunburst...
What colors to you like for your guitars?

LOL... your questions are too funny, guitplayer!
Well lessee... since I'm a vintage hound, I like all the classic colors. My Les Paul is (what else?) a Gold Top... well, that's all they made in '52! My '68 Tele is - natch - a butterscotch blonde with a black pickguard. My '63 SG Jr. is - what else? - cherry red. Both my '67 Rickenbacker 4001 bass and the '65 Rick 420 12-string are badass black.
Sometimes I think about getting a DanElectro guitar just to have a cheap one. If I got one of those I'd probably want the most obnoxious color I could find, like maybe the metallic teal. Just so I can totally blow the "classy guitars" thing right out of the water!

I have a thing for dark sunburst finishes. My Les Paul is a Gold Top, and my Hamer Echotone and Fender Jazz guitars are tobacco sunburst.
I wish Gibson would offer the ES-335 in the same honeyburst finish they have for the Les Paul. That would be my dream axe....I'd probably just hang it on the wall and stare at it.

It's not really a color... but I like Tung Oil.
For painted guitars... the majority of mine are black. I also have a few 'bursts, a white, and a "hammered metal" finish.

Not my guitar, but EVH was pictured with his Kramer Ripley guitar on the cover of a guitar mag in the late 1980's with a superb color scheme. It was Pink and white, tye-dye like finish. If I can find a pic I'll post it.
I love the translucent colors on fancy grade woods. (A la PRS guitars, etc.)

Haven't seen it yet. A blindingly brilliant aqua (not BLUE) pearl sparkle with a white pearloid pickguard. SURF'S UP, DUDE...(I like retro stuff)...
Aside to that, I'm a sucker for natural wood. I also like that real exaggerated sunburst from black to red to bright yellow. That has a retro look, too...and I lust after a 335 style guitar with that finish.

OK, since we're talking about ones we DON'T have... I like Lake Placid Blue... don't know why I don't have one that color. Maybe I should make my new Tele that color (if I ever get around to finishing it!).
I like a lot of the finishes on Reverend guitars. Especially cool is the "Lava Swirl" finish.
I once knew a girl who had a hot-pink G&L ASAT. What a HORRIBLE color for a GREAT guitar! (the girl was rather enchanting too)

I just searched Lycos under Kramer Ripley and they brought up a site about EVH's connection with Kramer. Very interesting site, for EVH fans.
Here's a link to the guitarmag pic I spoke of, but the quality pretty much sucked on their page. (Probably too low dpi plus they transformed it to fit in a square.) Hopefully it will look better here.

Nope! Oh, well... the wisps of white are very subtle in the original picture, not ragged solid lines like it appears here.

Not yellow, not red, definitely not green.. blue, no..
I guess that's why I tend to own black guitars. Or Olympic white strats; damage looks coolest on white strats.
Then I suppose natural sunbursts. Crazy flamey tops I like - for about a minute, then I think if I owned one I'd become to self-conscious about it "are they looking at me or this silly guitar?".
I like natural oil finishes on mahogany. Ibanez made a Sabre that had a cool oil finish; you can see and appreciate the grain of the wood, but it doesn't visually attack you. On the other hand - the toxicity of the finished probably does attack you and give you cancer. Oh well.
That Ripley VanHalen had was cool, it was sort of like a splattered hodge-podge of bad airbrushed flourescent colors, swirled together. Cool - but I wouldn't be caught dead playing such a thing in public in the 21st century.
Ya know - when it looked like Ed gave up bothering to paint his guitars on his own anymore, that was probably at the same time his style changed...

I don't have one, but I love the red "crocodile" finish on the Coral Electric Sitar (now on the Jerry Jones re-issue).
I have an Ovation '83 Commemorative with a nice transparent gray-to- opaque black sunburst. Would definitely consider that on another guitar.

Fiesta Red is my favorite for strats. I like Cherry Red for Gibsons (also like that Black with Gold hardware for Gibson Les Paul Customs, that Black Beauty look) And of course Western Orange for Gretsch Guitars.

It would be cool to have a Strat finished in orange the year they offered that color. Other than that Baldwin had a cool green burst finish that was nice. It went from extremely dark green (almost black) on the edges to a translucent emerald green in the middle. A translucent blue over beautiful wood (flame or curly) is nice. Almost bought one of those champagne sparkle 335s which get uglier with age as the sparkle corrodes so that's not too cool, but it does have a wacky appeal. I like my walnut 335 and my maple-glo 360-12 Rick. It's usually the wood that appeals to me more than the actual finish itself.

And a warm welcome to THX...a fellow 360-12 owner. How do you like re-stringing that beast? Any tricks you've come up with???
I emailed Rickenbacker and said...
"When I die, I'll find myself in a HUGE auditorium filled with 360-12s. If someone walks in and says 'Play 'em'...I'll know I'm in heaven. If, however, someone walks in and says 'Re-string 'em', then I'll know I've gone to the other place."

LOL that one had me rolling!!! Yeah no shit!
Talk about heaven... when Bob Dylan was touring with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Europe, I went out to England to catch seven of their shows. Roger McGuinn was the opener. McGuinn would come out and do some solo stuff on acoustic, then he strapped on the Rick and the Heartbreakers came out and backed him on a bunch of stuff. Let me tell ya... hearing "Eight Miles High" with McGuinn, Petty and Campbell ALL playing Rick 12's, not to mention Benmont Tench's soaring B-3 over the top of it all and Stan Lynch beating the crap out of the drums the way God intended ... I DID believe I'd died and gone to heaven!

All my playing friends have left the area so I don't play as much as I used to. (
Well, the headstock's a bitch...but mild compared to the tailpiece...(we're talking Rick 360-12s here)...
Lee, you lucky girl, you!!! What a show!
McGuinn's pretty cool, he'll answer email if you email him...I emailed him about the factory string order on the Ricks...case in point...that the normal order for any twelve is high octave to low octave, but Rick has it set up in reverse, and I changed mine to the standard twelve way (had to do some nut filing to make it work). Asked McGuinn about that and he replied "They ring longer the way Rick has them set up". And so I thought...oh, well, McGuinn thinks I'm an idiot now oh shit...(as if I need someone of McGuinn's stature to verify that) and he wrote back and said "But don't worry, Tom Petty has his set up like yours". So I didn't feel too bad.

No, it's one of the guitars I built (a Strat style), and I did the finish myself. I got the idea from Reverend though... of course mine didn't come out NEARLY as well as theirs. It's pretty cool though... I just wanted to do something different.
