This is a question asked on behalf of a friend who has built a mandocello but hasn't found the formula for laying out fret positions.

Can you refer me to any online resources on fret layout that I could print out for my friend?

The easy thing to do is go to Luthiers Mercantile or Stewart MacDonald Guitar Shop Supply and get their templets for it.
The tech answer is that the formula is based on the 12 root of 2. 12 is the number of equal divisions of the octave which is 2 times the fundamental. Log onto http://www.mimf.com and look in the archives, too; that's the luthier tech discussion site.
