Well, I kinda had hopes about putting a tune on the Stone/Cherney board's comp CD...but, they're really looking for massive engineering input. Mainly not from a performance point of view, but an engineering point. That puts me out in the pasture, as I'm not really an engineer-type dude.
So, howzabout a geetar forum comp CD? I think Dave Bryce has got something going in the keyboard corner...whaddy'all think???

Oh, and Simon,

This signature is classic!
My wife and I were just talking about how she used to rag on a co-worker in front of the receptionist. The receptionist wouldn't have understood your signature. She kept making "funny" comments about my wife's co-worker when it was just the two of them. My wife would just shake her head and walk away.

I'd bet poor Lisa rues the day she accepted this challenge...

I could be nutz, but I think someone has to decide on a clock,(MTC,ABS,or whatever) then a file format,.wav,mp3, or whatever, then we can send it to all compatible sound cards as a single track. sync everybodies efforts and mix.
Doh! I hope Marge doesn't hear about Shirley!!! Homer might be closer to Simons' aforementioned surgical penance, or was that penince? Hehehehe.... It's late bro's. See ya'll!

Yeah Tedster...I read that...ahem...rule on the MPER comp CD, and I don't know how it morphed into an "only engineering" compilation. I fear that the whole thing might become too...cliquish...you know...special members...and all that. Hope I'm wrong.
Personally, I feel that anyone involved in the "behind the scenes" and administrative duties of these CD projects should exclude themselves from also submitting...it's kind of like the judges get to also compete...
NOT that I am implying any members on theses forums would stoop to anything unfair. But you and I know, that even though we are all equal,...some people are always more equal.
But, I will keep a positive attitude about the whole thing, and wait for the pudding...then we will now for sure. Maybe waiting for the MPER CD project is a good idea anyway...that way...IF...there are any mistakes, you learn from them for other CD comp projects.
Though I am curious about how some forum member might have engineered their mixes...being first a songwriter/musician/producer and then an engineer ...I am more interested in the music itself, and possibly how to also get more exposure for my own stuff, because we all know that, when you get right down to it,...it is all about the music, the song. That said, I will admit that I use to be TOTALLY ANAL about keeping production notes…like…every parameter/knob setting on every box on every instrument, on every track….so I CAN supply more information than anyone would care to read about.
Yeah, I might be curious about a particular effect/process/trick that so-and-so forum member used on his/her guitar track, might even learn a little something. But there are so many BIG name engineers with beaucoup albums available for scrutiny, and in every music magazine, every month, there are one or two engineers dicussin' their techniques or dissecting one of their mixes/entire albums.
So I think on the MPER CD, even after reading all the "production notes", will still come down to just the music, just the songs. But hey…we, myself included, are all on a bit of an ego trip, it is the nature of creative/artistic people to want to show off their talents and hopefully get praised for it, even if it is just in this forum environment, so let the "engineers" have their day. In the small, private circle of these forums...we can all get anal and discuss the "nuts and bolts" of things. But the rest of the world, the large, majority...they could not give a shit about all that...they only care about the music, the song.
Don't lose any sleep over this...

Yeah, you're absolutely right, Miroslav.
The song (or piece of music if more experimental) is the bottom line. And, too, I worry that (hey folks, I'm just thinking out loud)...that a "Guitar Forum" comp CD could turn into "instrumental only example of your guitar technique"...so, I'd set forth that for our (Guitar Forum) CD...the criteria be that there be a guitar in it somewhere...perhaps in some dominant or semi-dominant role (in other words, no Fugue in Gm played on harpsichord)...but not restrictive. The song is the bottom line. If you wanna show off yer chops, fine. If you want to show how you make your guitar blend as one voice among many, fine, too...
Mi dos centavos...

WHat if you only smash one ala Townsend, sample that crunch/smash/bash, loop it for a dance/trance synth only tune...would that count?
How about if you just plug a guitar in, lean it against the amp with the volume set at 11. Then while playing a Fugue in Gm on harpsichord, you also capture the subsequent guitar feedback and mix it in with the harpsichord...would that count?
Also, what if I just have an acoustic guitar hanging around my neck while I sing,...BUT...I also mic the guitar to capture the ambience from the sympathetic vibrations caused by my singing acting on the open strings, ...would that count?
Of fuck it...I guess I'll just play a few licks!!!

Tedster, Miroslav et all I think the idea of an mp3 style format is an excellent one, after all we are here as guitarists/band peeps and it would be a shame if some great licks, chops, songs were not submitted because one of our loyal band of bruthas engineering skills were not deemed to be up to scratch!!
My vote

Tedster,
Thanks as always for this thread, I think we've tried to get some kind of "sharing" thing going a couple of times before with mixed results....
I think the most important idea is that we want to check out each other's music. My assumption is that this is not a "commercial" project and no one's trying to make a fortune. (Not with your music in general, just this compelation idea).
I would not be opposed to a web site area where any submittal could be accessed in mp3 or real audio format or whatever. If someone can set it up I'll contribute a song or two.
But I think cd quality is preferable.
SO...
For a limited time, in a limited way, I'd be willing to help.
I would be willing to receive music, select the tracks, burn some cd's and send a copy to anyone who submitted.
I also would think these could be reproduced by any of you and used for any non-commercial use, like a demo of your material or whatever.
For anyone who wants a cd, I won't charge anything but a buck for the cd and the postage to send it to you, and I'm don't plan to do any additional mastering or fancy design stuff. If someone wants to "donate" their graphics arts skills... OK. Otherwise.. What you send, if I pick it, is what gets burned. Depending on song length, we should be able to get 14 to 20 songs on a CD right? So if I get that many... everyone will probably be on it.
I won't be sending your original CD back, so don't send me your only one, OK?
Anyone interested in sending mp3's or wav files to me can send them to my acousticvoodoo@yahoo.com address...
If you want to send a cd version instead, e-mail me and I'll send you my physical address.
I'll accept submittals through July 1, 2001 and hopefully make the picks and the "master" over the 4th of July weekend... and get them to all of you the next week.
This isn't intended to replace a more "formal" thing done with Musicplayer or any of you... just a short term way to get something going right now as a "first try"...
P.S. You can count on something of mine on the CD !!!

Hey Guit...
Listening to "Acoustic Prayer" as I type this...sounds cool...really dreamy acoustic stuff...reminds me of stuff me and my acoustic buds would jam to late at night with a fire crackling in the fireplace.
The only thing I'd do (and I'm inexperienced so you can ignore me) is put a bit of 'verb on it. But, that depends on what vibe you want. The vibe you've got is more up close and personal...like you're actually in the room, listening to a couple guys jamming in front of a fire (you will note I like fires, both in the fireplace and campfires). If you're going for a more "studio" vibe, I'd add the 'verb..just a tad.
Your synopsis of the CD thing sounds generally cool...

Great idea, Guitplayer.
Don't forget to use an 80 min. CD, then you can squeak a few more tracks on it.
I'll have to whip up some new recordings and send one!

I think the website idea is a very good one! It sounds like the easiest and fastest way to make this happen, so everyone can add their music at their own pace and anyone who wants a CD can create one.

Ain't got a CD Burner. Would a 256kbs mp3 be an acceptable source?
Whats the guideline for material... instrumental, something with lyrics but also with lots of guitar playing?

W. F. Turner said...
>>>Whats the guideline for material... instrumental, something with lyrics but also with lots of guitar playing?
I answered this earlier at length...clicked "submit reply"...and the stupidass thing said "You did not complete all the required form fields" and deleted what I had written, so I said "to hell with it...I'll try again later...
See Miroslav's earlier post for guidance
I'd say anything that's guitar oriented is fair game. I wouldn't, for example, send in electronic dance stuff, unless your guitar playing figured prominently in the loop. I'd say any guitar instrumentals are fine, but additionally, any song in which your guitar playing figures prominently, from E.J.-isms to Bream-isms to fingerstyle folk to just plain ol' rockin' pop tunes in which the guitar plays a major role. In short, anything, basically, from technical wow a'la Chip and Khan to pop stuff.
It'd be nice to include a bunch of styles...prog, jazz, blues, country...etc...if possible.
Now I'm gonna try to submit it again...fingers crossed...

I'm not an expert on file format conversion... I bet there's a tool that will allow you to convert mp3's to wav files suitable for CD's... If someone knows a good one for Windows let me know... In a "worse case" senario, I could "play" your mp3 and digitally re-record it...
If you have the .wav file to start with maybe the answer is sending it to me via an e-mail attachment?
As far as song content goes, I'm pretty open. It's not really my intent to "judge" which songs are "better", but I'm not expecting to get overwhelmed by submittals, so hopefully "everyone" will get on...
(No one has sent ANYTHING yet!)
I'd say try to stay under 5 minutes or so to leave some room for others, but I might make exceptions for certain works...
I'll also try to acknowledge each submittal on a thread here that "makes it"...
One good idea that the "engineering" guys had that I think would be interesting for us... How about, if your submittal gets picked, you let us know what guitar(s), amp(s), effect(s), and so on that you used... We could at least start a thread that has this info on an "opt-in" basis when I send the copies out...
