I'm a relatively beginner guitarist with a strat. What can I do (if anything) to allow vibrato bar pitch bends that go up as well as down ?

Nell, welcome to the loony bin. To get the bar to go both ways you need to raise the bridge so you get some clearance from the body of the guitar. To do this you need to turn the two big screws that the bridge pivots on counterclockwise.
This has two results:
1. You can now pull up as well as push down on the bar.
2. You have just raised the action (the distance from the fretboard to the strings) by an equal amount as the bridge.
There are two ways to lower the action back to where it was.
1. Each bridge saddle has two little allen screws that you can use to raise and lower them.
2. If you can't lower the saddles enough to get it to play well, you will have to "shim" the neck. To do this you will have to remove the neck (the four big screws on the back of the guitar) and put a small piece of wood or cardboard towards the front of the neck cavity to tilt the neck up a little.
If you are not comfortable doing these kinds of adjustments I recommend you find a local guitar tech to do them for you. But if you like to tinker, go for it.
That being said, I have two recommendations that as a teacher I would tell to anyone who is new to guitar. Unscrew the bar, put it in the case, and don't worry about it for a while. And get a teacher. You can improve your playing so much faster with someone to help you along.
Good Luck
KHAN

Pardon me (or maybe not) but there seems to be a certain aloof in-joke (in-jerk?) quality to some peoples responses here. If you're looking for a "loony bin" maybe you should try your mirror. If you can't find legit use of this space (no matter what your perceived "credentials") maybe you should log-on to one of those card playing sites & get a game of solitaire going.

Geez Nell, I thought my original post was welcoming and sincere, and I did my best to help you out. If you are offended by my "loony bin/loony toons" pun, maybe it is you that has found the wrong forum.

In my experience, KHAN has been quite the joker on these forums.
However, I've yet to see the meanspirited teasing and insults that HAVE occurred here (forums in general) come from him. As he's already stated, and I agreed in my poke at his response, he gave you excellent information. Watch out, Nell. If KHAN's and my further responses insulted you in some way, you're not going to like what you find elsewhere in the expert forums at all.
Not looking for a fight, just felt KHAN hit it on the head and decided to praise him, tongue-in-cheek.

Yo, all who think that only they have senses of "humor" (or that humor is best "shared" by private in jokes they hope to sail just over the heads of others who somehow lack the sophistication to "get it"), maybe it is you who "have found the wrong forum"; maybe you should go back to high school & reassume your place in the crowd of badboy/wiseacres smoking behind the gym. Y'know just because you've been onboard here a while doesn't mean this is your house. Yes, KHAN, your first posting was helpful,in general, but equally so was that from gtrmac & he didn't need to indulge in the goofy, non-relevant cross-exchange that "fantastic sound/Neil" & you mistake for humor.Maybe your "jokes" would be appreciated if they had any connection to the subject (witticism as opposed to half-witticism), although I doubt anyone is going to feel welcome when their entry is met with the snide sort of "Hello" illustrated by Neil's first posting "on" this topic thread. This could all be a misunderstanding from which we learn or it could just be a chance for some to demonstate more "humor"---make your own decisions but don't bother "informing" me 'cause I'm not coming back to find out.

Hey KHAN, what was that about? I've been flamed by people, but I usually understand WHY I was flamed, even if I think they're wrong. And I'm sure you've seen me blast people for excessively rude posts. Did we do that?
No idea what's going on with Nell. Apparently, in Nell's view, this is supposed to be a Harvard class in Applied Science of Acoustic & Electric Guitars. No talking out of turn.
Sorry to shut you down, Nell. Not at all my intention. You have to understand that in a short time, you get to know people's online personalities, and respond accordingly. And no, I won't be responding to you with anything less than an informed opinion in the future. I don't want to run anyone off these forums.

For some reason Nell thinks there was some kind of inside joke here. This is simply not the case. Yes, I joke around here and that is not likely to change any time soon. I have not and will not use humor to try to hurt people or make fun of them. Except of course for Simon!!!

d,
I've taken your concerns to heart and here's what I'm gonna do.
First, I've taken over the entire site... and BOY are there some NEW RULES!
1) NO FUNNY STUFF!
2) Humor in any shape or form is inappropriate since this is a forum for guitar players and God knows we have NO sense of humor.
3) Anyone new here doesn't need to lurk for a while, read some old threads, learn about the people who post, and the tone of this board. NO! You MUST jump right in and I INSIST you flame ANYONE who dares attempt ANYTHING close to a joke... (See rule 1). Be sure to be as insulting as you can, especially if you don't know anything about music, guitar playing, technique, guitar setup, tuning, amps or anything else... and the person tries to help you...
Is this better?

Hey D. Please do NOT bow out. I think KHAN and I have made it clear neither of us is out to hurt anyone with humor, nor deliberately digress a thread away from the original poster's intentions.
That said, how boring these forums would be if no one injected their personality into the replys. I might add that you can read ANY of the industry magazines and several of the staff writers inject humor into the fleshing out of serious audio topics. They know hardly anyone will continue to read a magazine devoid of personality.
As I said before, I apologise to Nell (despite my difference of opinion) and will not post another reply to her questions without it being a pertinent reply.
Does that address your question of whether I listened to her suggestions? Perhaps you should read the select lines KHAN quoted in his reply to your question. Talk about rude. You know what they say about people living in glass houses. She was the only one who cast stones at anyone.

I only ask so you can relay the sincere replies and maybe Nell will come back and get information and enjoyment out of posting here.

Amen, brother. I agree with you. I would hate if these forums ended up being just plain dry informative. I will handle the occasional insult and trolling in exchange for the good laughs I have around here.
And, Khan, keep up the humor. I usually get a good laugh from your posts.

Nell,
I don't think anyone here had any intentions of offending you or insulting your intelligence in any way. This is a lively little group we've got here. Yes, we definitely do have a tendency to joke around, but it's all in fun. No one here means any harm. We all try to help each other, answer questions as best as we can and share our experiences in playing music.
As the moderator of this wonderful group, I can assure you that I've NEVER had to remove anyone's post anywhere in this forum because of hurtful words that attack another member. I will also point out that I have not seen a similar forum on other websites where the members had such great camaraderie and respect for each other. I've seen some really nasty remarks thrown around on other forums..... Here at Musicplayer.com, we are all friendly.
I read through the suggestions other members made and I think that people were only trying to help you with some good advice. You may not have appreciated the humor, but I am certain that no one intended to insult you. So let's brush it off and not have any future misunderstandings.

GREAT TIPS!!!!
I was just curious about the same subject. I have a Danelectro Innuendo Baritone that has a vintage style tremolo and was not sure how to set it up to full float. Also, I was concerned because the four interior screws on the bridge were not flush to the bridge. I thought that may have been a set up error from the factory. Thanks to the link to the Fender site I now know that it's not an error and I will be able to perform my set-up! For the person who wants to go lower but doesn't want a 7-string, check out a baritone. I am regularly a bass player who dabbles in guitar but could not really find "THE SOUND" that I was looking for. I tried out a baritone and found "IT"!!! I am having fun adapting guitar parts to it (tuned to B) and with using a capo. It is incredibly versatile and I'm looking to get together with others to jam.
I find all of these forums on MusicPlayer.com to be very informative and also very entertaining. I have no problem being in a "LOONY BIN". Matter of fact, someone seeing me with one of my 30" scale baritones at an open mike might think I'd just escaped from one (loony bin)!

Hey, I didn't work up these computer skills (such as they are) just to abandon them. If you've been looking around the various forums you know I'm here & have a lot to say...or at least a lot of comments . By "folding my tent", I just meant I was abandoning this thread---after all, the subject of vibrato bar adjustment was well covered early on. See ya 'round the club !

Geez...this is the first time I've visited this thread...'cause in general I'm not really a vibrato nut. I think Nell is uncomfortable with where the vibrato bar is...maybe a change in its location would help her lighten up a bit...and...I'd bet she's gone. She'll find a more SERIOUS thread somewhere else.
