Who's the Best "New" Guitarist?

We've had loads of "best guitarists" threads... we've named hundreds of great players and I generally agree with most of the posts. But I noticed that almost all of the players made their "name" at some point between the 60's and the 80's.
So using 1990 as a starting point... who are the "new" guitarists you enjoy.
I know, I know... some will say "there aren't any NEW guitarists". But of course there are.
For me, I'd probably say my favorite is Derek Trucks. He's a slide prodigy and really emotes. If you like the Allman Bros, you'll probably get a chance to see him this summer when he tours with them. (He's drummer Butch Truck's nephew).
But I actually prefer his solo albums which are a lot more "jazz" flavored than the Allman Bros. classics...
How about it... anyone new you like?

i dunno-1st you say "best" and i would ask you to define best-then you say "who do you enjoy" and my answer to that is whoever moves me-for instance ,i can go into a bar and a 3 piece punk band is playin,maybe not too good, but every once in a while i will hear an arrangement or a chordal sequence or just a note or notes or sounds that will inspire me, as opposed to going to a pro show and hearing the latest,flashiest wannabe-gonabee w/ all the record co.$$ back-up,entourage etc. and i wont *hear* nothin. it just usually works that way for me...

guitplayer- did you see the Derek Trucks Band when they opened up for Eric Johnson at 4th and B? They were really good live, and I loved the jazz influences. Most shows I've seen in the last couple years, I've enjoyed the opening act more than the main attraction.

I was just about to mention Derek Trucks before you beat me to it. Great tone and taste. He's got his own thing. He has his own voice. When was the last time you heard a slide player doing Miles Davis' "So What?"
The other guy I dig is his buddy Jimmy Herring. He plays the hell out of a guitar. Croakin' at Toads?

Agreed. I noticed you gave him two "high complements": "He's got his own thing. He has his own voice." I can't think of a nicer thing to say about a new player.
I do have Croakin' at Toads and I agree Jimmy is another awesome player. Derek also has had another of my favorite players, and another ex-Allman, Warren Haynes on his cd's... The guy keeps good company.
I've had the chance to meet him, and he's very unassuming, not really making much money, but totally committed to being "an artist". I admire that and I hope he gets everything he deserves... Certainly, he's more interesting than the Johnny Lang's of the world...

I was at that show and thought Derek did a good job. I have to admit that I still was more amazed by Eric Johnson!
Were you at Derek's previous 4th and B show when he opened up for Satriani? I thought he was better that night, but Joe's fans weren't as well matched to his style as Eric's were.
Are you going to go see Yngwie tonight at 'Canes?

Mato Nanji of Indigenous. He's a electric blues ripper.
Here's a mini-bio:
The Native American blues-rock group Indigenous consists of three brothers, Mato Nanji (vocals and guitar), Pte (bass), and Horse (percussion), and their sister, Wanbdi (drums, vocals). The Nakota Nation members grew up on South Dakota's Yankton Indian Reservation and were inspired by their father, Greg Zephier, who had been a musician in the '60s and '70s and later became a spokesperson for Native American rights.

Personally, i think that Mark Tremonti from Creed is one of the best "new" guitarists out there right now. There's nothing real special about his tone, but his song writing abilities and playing skill is just outstanding. Creed is really not that bad. hee hee.

guitplayer- I didn't see Satriani, and wasn't aware that Derek Trucks opened for him. I've never heard heard of Indigenous, but it sounds pretty interesting.

I saw Derek with Eric. I was not at all impressed with Derek. He just stood there with his head down through the whole show. No stage presence at all IMO. I also thought his tone was pretty thin. I guess maybe that's not a fair assessment since he was followed by "Admiral Von Tonehausen". That's gotta be a tough gig.
 Derek Trucks, you have been found guilty of being less amazing than Eric Johnson.

My vote would be Eric Gayles......amazing this guy hasn't swept the world, he's awesome.

I'm a big Eric Gales fan as well. He made a big splash at a young age even before Sheppard and Lang but then dissapeared. He had some bad breaks. I saw him with The Gales Brothers Band back in the mid 90's after their appearance on Arsenio. Great sound and style. I don't think the Hendrix similarities and the fact that he was too young to handle the pressures of fame did him any good. He's supposedly on the next Santana album and has his own album coming out soon. He plays on a Hendrix tribute CD called "Voodoo Haze." He does a dynamite version of Voodoo Child (Not Slight Return).
I'm a fan of his brother Little Jimmy King too. In my mind he is the 21st century Albert King.

Kenny Wayne Sheppard was hot with Trouble Is but may have dropped a notch with his last album. His live playing is great. I've seen him twice at the House of Blues. I would like to see him team up with a looser singer, maybe Corey Stevens.

We have a wonderful slide player here in Nashville, by way of L.A. Her name is Lauren Ellis, and she's equal parts player, luthier, and guitar tech. Great Tone! Plays a lot of Dobro instruments, but standard guitar posture. She's an excellent songwriter, too. Here's the link to her debut album:

She's based in Nashville, for now. If you're in town, she sounds good on record, but she's smokin' live.
The first night I mixed for her, in a little bar, she'd been in town for a week. Just about to start playing, when she suddenly says, "I don't believe this. Seymour Duncan!" Well, I'm a guitar player, but I wouldn't have known Seymour Duncan (the man) from a hole in the wall. I thought she was BS'ing me. Nope, it WAS Seymour and he'd heard she was playing and came to say hi and listen. This was just the beginning. She knows EVERYBODY! (Yeah, yeah, I know some bozos will post "not me!") I don't know how she has managed to slide under the radar for so long.

C'mon... somebody other than just me has to think Jeff Buckley is impressive. He wasn't a flashy guitarist by any means, but his songwriting was great and his tone was beauftiful. Check out stuff off the first disc of "Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk" and you'll see what I mean, and those are only mixes of what he had before he died. I'm sure the finished product would have been even better.

Don't worry Scott, you're not the only one.  I think Jeff Buckley's guitar work was awesome.

Johny Lang for one, I don't know if he writes his tunes or not but the kids got tone and soul for days. I've seen him live and he has good stage presence and an awesome voice too.
Another guy I like but don't know how long he's been around is Chris Duarte, one hell of a good guitar player and singer. Be warned though, if you ever see him live in a smaller venue, wear earplugs!!! Talk about stage volume!!!!
And for the ladies I really like Susan Tedeschi (sr??), I don't know that I'd say she's the hottest guitar player I've ever heard but the gals got soul and she can SING.

Hey Neil...thanks for the tip on Lauren Ellis. I really like the demo, I'm gonna have to go and buy the whole disc. BTW, I was wondering if you have heard this other Nashville hotshot, Johnny Hiland, who was written up in GP mag a couple months back as the next Telemaster a la Danny Gatton. Give us the scoop!

Caught the EJ and Derek Trucks show last night. Unfortunately, the whole thing was marred by poor sound (likely the venue, not the sound system).
I agree with KAHN that Derek really needs to develop at least some sort of stage presence. He just stood there the whole set with his head down. Also, the musicians in Derek's backing band were so talented that they often overshadowed him, especially on the jazzier material. Derek is definitely a gifted slide player and seemed much more at home with the blues oriented material.
As for EJ...I've seen him several times and this one wasn't the best but even so the guy is simply amazing.

Buckley, had he stayed around, would have been doing interesting things.
Hmm. Morello I suppose; hopefully Cornell will be more of an influence on their songwriting now that they're "Soundmachine" or "Rage Against the Garden" or whatever (should be very cool)...
Hmm. Thinking... Derek does cool stuff, jazz slide....hmm. Interesting new guitar players... hmm...

He came out a little before 1990, but I think the best guitar player of the last ten years or so has got to be Grahm Coxon from Blur. Awesome songs and excellent guitar riffs.

I saw this guy down in LA named Eric Sardinas. He's a real devil on the slide guitar. He plays electric resonators. He's the first young guitarist I've seen who shows a very clear Johnny Winter influence (on guitar and vocals!) as opposed to an SRV influence. His show was 3 hours of pure pedal-to-the-metal blues. He does need to do some frettin' however. All he played was slide. I dig Bernard Allison, Luther Allison's son, quite a bit too. Oh yeah, Hadden Sayers is pretty awesome too. It's hard to find a bluesman from Texas who doesn't sound exactly like Stevie Ray, but he pulls it off.

I noticed a comment about Johnny Hiland in here...He's the top cat...I've recorded him a few times on sessions. He's a Tele-master for sure, but he plays almost every style. Well too, no nagging Tele chicken crossover stuff...plays like that style was his passion, and I mean every style. Definately worth the lookup...
