I just bought a used Charvel/Jackson guitar and started taking lessons. I really want to do the 80's metal guitar solos while trying to merg all other styles of music. What rock groups should I be listening to? The music I'm trying to merg is Industrial, R&B, Funk, Soul,Heavy Metal.

Don't limit yourself. Listen to as many different kinds of music and as many different bands as you can. Pick out something to learn from the ones you like and make it a point to learn something new every time you pick up the guitar. With lots of steady practice, you'll see the improvement happening and that should encourage you to keep at it. Good luck!

No one defined the eighties metal guitar better than Randy Rhoads of Ozzy Osbourne. The first two albums, Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman, are a great place to start. They are available in books w/tablature and are a great resource.
I wasn't a huge fan of metal but Randy Rhodes seemed to be a cut above the rest and influenced a lot of guitarists.
