Fender's about to reissue the Fender Super Reverb. I've been tempted to get a "vintage" one, but the high cost and low availability have kept me from taking the plunge.

Have any of you had experiences with their other reissues like the Twin or Bassman that would lead you to love or hate the idea of this one?

Prosonic Combo - balls like a 100 watt Marshall, but with a Fender sound - the combo has the 'verb. If the re-issues don't suit look at the ProSonic.

Nothing like an old twin tho - geeze they were heavy.

I've used the Bassman, Twin and Deluxe Reissues. They are a good alternative. I think that the Super reissue should be nice. Another way to go is to buy a beat up Fender that is in good working condition and use Mojo parts. They have new cabinets already coverec and with grill cloth, blackface panels, chassis, etc. You can take an amp that has been beat to pieces and have it looking new. Their prices are very good. The key to going this route depends on what you can fine a beatup Fender for. Mojo supplies Fender with their vintage parts. The reissue way is still probably the cheapest way to go.

I happened to get a really good deal on a Reissue Bassman so I can complain but it really became a great amp after some modifications.

You probably will be getting the newly reissued Jensen speakers so that is a plus. I got Eminencies and had to put in some Weber VST P10R's to get better sound. Regardless of what speaker you use, they will need some time to break in so don't panic if they sound stiff at the beginning.

The amp comes to you biased cold because apparently Fender doesn't want to see a lot of blown amps under warranty. I did the Gerald Weber (no relation) modification to my reissue Bassman allow for bias adjustment. I now set the amp at 35 milliamps. I don't know how bias is adjusted in the Super Reverb.

You can upgrade your tubes too. I went hog wild with RCA black plate 6L6's but you can find some good NOS stuff for less. Also GE is good 12AX7 preamp tube for the Fenders. I would consider a tube rectifier if it comes with a solid state one. A tube rectifier will give you a little sag/compression.

A great source for NOS tubes is Lord Valve at NBS Electronics in Denver.

Lastly, I went overboard by putting in a vintage output transformer by Dixie but it did improve the sound.

A pine box is better than plywood but by this point you should have a pretty good sounding amp.

These modifications do not need to be done at once. I would say a better set of tubes and a change in bias would be about all you need to do.

Stanner, never had a vintage Deluxe, but I used to have an early silver face twin that sounded pretty awesome too.

It's impossible to guess with Fender these days. Their line is so sketchy and variable. I've heard good reissues, seen them take a beating and hold up - and I've seen the reverse. I think it's sort of like picking a good one and hoping the "help" got their extra portion of jello at lunch that day.

Probably a good alternative to paying a premium for a "vintage" one with the same dubious state of innards, unless they want Prosonic prices for one. For that matter, an amp I've seen have more trouble than any would be the Prosonic....

<<pretty good sounding amp.>>>

Mojo Musical Supply makes pine Fender cabinets of most models. They are cover in tweed, brown, blonde, black tolex--grill clothes of the correspnding year. If they don't have what you are looking for they will make it. They will also age the tweed if you what. They have Marshall and other stuff too.

How bout a silver-face era Fender? I'm a Vibrolux Reverb freak (I've owned 7 of them over the years). Despite owning a nice '67 BF VR, my main gigging amp is a 1981 VR with the Black panel (Rivera era, or actually, just Pre-Rivera). It's like a VR on steroids. Great BF clean sound, but a LOT louder. It has the pull distortion and that sucks, but I've been using a Tube Screamer in front for years anyway. Great amp with great verb and trem. One thing, mine has had the speakers replaced with cheap Eminence speakers, and it sounds better than the factory speakers for these amps, (I've owned a stock one). Jensens would probably sound even better. And they sell cheap, too. Just saw a clean one go for $450 online. Just a thought. Have fun!! JP

Quad Reverb was nice. Loaded with JBLs it made one of the best pedal steel amps I've ever heard (Ralph Mooney used them).

I am sorry, but ever since Fender fired Zinky, they haven't built a GREAT amp. They re-issue, but they are NOT the same. Try them side-by-side my friends, you will hear.

Zinky did all the old Greats....including the Blues Devilles, etc.

Check out Zinky's new amps. (He is the guy who made the cigarette amp)

...Uh... Does Zinky have / work for a specific company? Website? Phone #?

Also, any of you who are going to be at NAMM this week, let me know if you get a chance to check the Super Reverb Reissue...

Thanks in advance...

Handybrent. I've looked on Harmony Central, and checked "google" search, but found no listings for Smokehouse Amplifiers. Do you know how to find out more? Phone, website, dealer?

I played a Super Reverb reissue at NAMM and was blown away by it. They had the sound of that amp down.

Guitplayer,

You can find my former workmate, Bruce Zinky, at http://www.smokeyamps.com

He doesn't have too much on his site as of today but he usually has a lot in the pipeline.

To me Bruce's finest moment at Fender was the Pro Junior. That circuit has found its way into a lot of models since he left Fender. The latest being the Art Deco Amp shown at this years NAMM in Anaheim. Great looking thing.

Best regards,

Mats Nermark

PS I think the reissues sound fine in their own right. If they sound identical to the original? It depends on which original you listen to as it is my experience that the originals age differently. Some sonds great and some sounds not so great.

Thanks Mats,

I'm looking forward to learning what Zinky has coming down the pipe. I'm also starting to get excited about checking out the Super Reverb reissue... I hear what you mean about the "aging" of the older ones. I've played a few in the last month or two and they varied greatly in sound, physical shape, and original parts. Hopefully if I decide to get one, I'll find a gem.
