Hi Quantum, I am not a "real" bass player as you probably realize, but one of those annoying guitar players who tries to play bass sometimes. But, my favorite bass rig is a Rickenbacker 4001 thru an Ampeg (B-15 fliptop for studio, SVT for stage). I do have a '67 4001, and a B-15, for my home studio. I use this rig for recording mainly, but of course, any Real Bass Players who happen through here are welcome to play it! And I am happy when they do so I don't have to.

Hi Lee, do you mic the B-15 if so what type of mic how far away . Do you overdrive the pre or do you keep it clean. Paul.

Paul,
Yes I do mic the B-15, and as far as your other questions it really depends on the song. I often use a Sennheiser 421 but sometimes I have even used a condenser such as my all purpose CAD E-100's. I tend to put the mic about 18 inches to 2 feet away and face the amp toward a wall or gobo, with the mic very close to the wall, which tightens things up a bit and takes the room out of the picture for the most part.
I do tend to overdrive the pre a bit, nothing too over the top but some. If I want a perfectly clean sound I will normally just go direct out of the head and not mic the speaker (or use a DI). But IMO that sounds too sterile with a Rick. Fender basses sound good that way but Rick's usually need something to make them sound a little nastier. Again, it all depends on the song and what kind of sound I'm going for. I tend to go for the McCartney (circa Revolver and later)/John Paul Jones/Duck Dunn type of tone, just to give you a reference, but if the song requires it of course I'll go for something different.

Lee,
Right now I play bass for session work only. I use an Ibanez SR-885 through a Cry-Baby/BB-535 into a Sans Amp/PSA-1. I use PT plug-ins for any effects that should be applied. I'm looking at getting a Modulus/Quantum-5, & a SWR Super Red Head W./Bag End drivers in the near future.

P.S.:I hope they start a post for Bass players. Drummers as well.

Yamaha Nathan East through a Bass POD with the floorboard, into Shure PSM600 in-ears. It's extremely portable. If someone else was around to haul my stuff, and money was no object, I'd go back to my old setup. A Bag End D10BXD and S18BD, and add a Crown K2 to power it

Quantum, the Super Redhead rocks - you should also give the "Mo Bass" a listen - the best I've heard - I'd love to trade up.

im wanting to try the new swr. is that the mo bass? im dying to try the sub synthesis a la dbx120.
ampeg makes the best sounding bass amp [older the better, early 70's preferably].
as for basses, im all over the place and depends on the type of bass you are playing.

you gotta try the new SWR (MoBass or something like that) - I know Ampegs kick, but that thing - if it sounded any better, well, you could sleep with it (OK, Lee's gonna get bent about that - 'cause we already had it over the machine "companion" thing) - figuratively, of course

My Current rig is my Dream rig (for now...) My main basses- equal time between my Pedulla thunderbass and my Alembic Essence. I just upgraded to The SWR Mo'Bass driving a SWR Goliath sr.(6-10's). This combo gives me all the power/tone I have ever needed (so far....) The Mo' Bass is really amazing, I'm still finding 'new' sounds !! signing off......Happy Bass Player....

Modulus Flea Bass '59 P-Bass GK 1000RB Acme Low-B 4-10 Sans Amp GT2 MXR Flanger
I know the Flea bass to the P bass is a big jump. Vintage and Graphite but they serve a lot of needs. If you haven't checked out acmesound.com for cabinets do so. Best cabinet I've ever heard.

Peeps,
I'm gonna check out the Mo'Bass but I hav'nt seen one in the local music stores. Anybody play any of the Eden stuff? I used to have the Bass DI before the PSA-1. I agree with you all about the Ampeg stuff. I played through an Ampeg stack last week.

Yeah I agree that the Mo Bass kicks ass, and hey Steve, if you want to sleep with it, whatever floats yer boat - all those thunderous bass vibrations can't be bad!

Only do studio work.
Basses: 2x Music Man Sting Ray 5 (one maple and one rosewood fingerboard) Morch custom built 4 string (Low B to D, 36" scale) Vintage Jazz bass Rickenbacker 4001 (Dunno how old, serial number 4930) Flatwound strings Custom built 4 string fretless
Ampeg svp Pro Bass POD Demeter tube DI
Prefer my Urei 1176 for compression. Also like the SansAmp Pro tools plug in on bass.
Looking for a good sounding acoustic bass...any suggestions? Also hoping to find a nice P-bass.
