Owsley (www.owsleymusic.com). Same type of thing... one guy, recorded in his living room. I picked up his first CD on a whim (I sometimes browse through the stores and buy things that look interesting), and really enjoyed it. What a great find! He's working on a second now, and I'm sure I'll pick that one up too. I don't think he has samples on his site, but you can find some at CDNow.

the beatles - http://www.beatles.com ...4 likable lads from liverpool who never got the break they deserved.... unfortunately, they broke up due to lack of sales as the tide of popular music changed towards more "advanced" musical artists such as britney spears and lil' bow wow... their label dropped them when the a&r guy just didn't "hear any singles"...

It certainly got some good press reviews back in the day in the UK, but almost no one seems to know this album stateside...so I submit:
Prefab Sprout, Jordan: The Comeback
I think it is a fantastic pop album for those with the mind and ear to appreciate it. It was released in 1990, and I don’t know if I have heard a pop album since that is on its level.

I haven;t heard thatone, but their albm "Two Wheels Good" is another fantastic pop album. I think it also did okay in the UK, but aside from possibly the track "When Love Breaks Down," I don't think too many people are familiar with it.

ben vaughn is an indie god. i've had the great pleasure of opening for him on several occasions. (he was nice enough to let us use his equipment too)... his stuff is hard to track down, but his first record (with ben vaughn combo) is great. he also did a cool weird record with alan vega and alex chilton that is fun. but somewhat demanding. marhsall crenshaw (who should be listed in this thread too) has covered ben's tunes as have barrence whitfield and others. and don't foget he does the music for 3rd ROCK sitcom show... hail ben!

One and only album released by these guys (You all know the song "There She Goes" thanks to Sixpence None the Richer. The original version kicked its ass).
The whole album is very cool and hardly ever gets notice.

David Sylvian's "Dead Bees On A Cake" is an absolutely gorgeous recording that practically no one has heard. Lush, romantic, laid-back and yet emotionally intense. Over the years, Sylvian has worked variously with Eno, Fripp, Sakamoto, Mark Isham, Holgar Czuckay...the list goes on, and he utilizes what he's absorbed from those collaborations on this recording. He dedicated the album to his wife, Ingrid Chavez, who appears on the record;also with Marc Ribot on guitar, and Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn.

This Canadian band is absolutely incredible.
They play very tight, modern pop-rock with healthy doses of electronica and crunching guitars + slight (but great!) prog-rockish feel. Also quite a lot of tasty piano parts. Male and female lead singers (very good voices, especially the female's one!) do a fantastic job and are in use effectively (side by side) on almost all the songs which are melodic and straightforward. Clean and punchy production. Strong lyrics.
It's hard to over-recommend them! Just check them out.

These are my hometown favorites, all of whom have some SERIOUSLY great power-pop stuff:
Kenny Howes and the Yeah! (http://www.kennyhowes.com) - Influenced by Revolver-era Beatles, early Who, Big Star, Cheap Trick, pretty much everything that crunches and jangles. This guy writes GREAT songs and is a killer guitar player and multi-instrumentalist. There are links to lots of sound clips. And they have a new album coming out in September, you HAVE to check it out.
Orange Hat (http://www.orangehat.com - lotsa sound clips) - The more psychedelic side of pop, e.g. Jellyfish, XTC/Dukes of Stratosphere, Magical Mystery Tour-era Beatles. Great melodies, great harmonies, trippy lyrics and arrangements. And the above-mentioned Kenny Howes plays the Vox organ in this band.
The Young Antiques (their web site is at http://www.youngantiques.com - listen to sound clips and buy CD at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/youngantiques ) - Elvis Costello meets Husker Du and the Replacements and they bump into Steve Earle. Again, killer songwriting!
Also, if anybody has never heard the great L.A. power pop band of the 80's, the Plimsouls, you oughta! Yes, you can find them on CDNow. I would recommend "The Plimsouls...Plus". Check out their lead singer, Peter Case's solo stuff also - it's more acoustic/folk than pop but still a lot of great songwriting to be heard.
