Hi there!
I am about to move my studio to another place, and I found an old power amp (Alesis R-100) that it has this problem, I wonder if I can fix it:
The right volume knob, when you turn all the way down, it continues to let sound out, if I turn to other position he gets a lot of variations on the volume level. As you can see, this makes impossible to stay on a specific volume level exactly as the left channel.
Is this a easy thing to solve? And can I fix it or should I get technician help?
This amp has been for several years (2-3), in the original cardbox, but with no use. If this problem becomes expensive to fix it, I just might give it away and get another one!
Any help or repair link would be great!
Thanks!

One of the most useful things that a studio can have is a stepped attenuating system for monitor level control. This insures repeatability. Were I in your shoes, I'd probably run that particular amp flat out, and go to GoldPoint or DACT and get an attenuator. I'd probably even calibrate it to RP200 as per Bob Katz's excellent instructions in his mastering book.

Open the unit, and see if it can be easily replaced. If not, take it to a repair shop and let them do it. I don't know what bench time costs in your area, and I don't know how hard it would be to change the pot in this amp.... but it still shouldn't take more than 2 hours of bench time. Surely the amp is worth more than that?

I am gonna open and try to clean it with a contact cleaner. Is this a correct procedure? If that does not work, can you easy replace it, or it involves soldering?

I'd surely try contact cleaner first. Yes, to replace it would require solder. The problem with some of the inexpensive gear is that it is not really easy for non-techs to replace parts, like it used to be. Sometimes it is very much worth paying someone else to do it for you.

Bill Yes, I think that too. Ok, thanks. By the way, how did you manage to use your own avatar?

If you look in your profile, you'll see that option.
