You can be sure that they'll sound different. Whether they'll sound better, only you can decide.
In my experience, mic positioning and drummer playing technique have always had a greater effect on the sound than the mic make & model.. Within limits... if you're comparing a Radio Shack dynamic vocal mic to a U87, guess which one would have a sound most people would prefer?
All that aside, my preferences (for inexpensive mics) would be: Snare: SM57 Kick: Studio Projects C1 Overheads: Sennheiser MD421's left & right
I don't use rack tom & floor tom mics because it creates a huge ugly mess of phase problems, and gating them only switches from one phase problem to another phase problem each time any gate opens. Less is more... and sounds better.

Thanks, Phil.
I appreciate the advice.

If money is the question then I would go with the Shure DMK57-52 (3 SM57s and a Beta 52) deal. You can also use the sm57s on the guitar amps and the beta 52 on a bass cab. DW's are such nice drums that it really is hard to make them sound bad.

I like the 57 for snare, Neumann KM84 for hat, EV RE20 or Senn 421 for kick and 57's for toms. Unless you want to get fancy and use condensers. I've had good luck with vintage AKG 451-452's They are relatively cheap on the used market considering they are vintage. It's a good idea to use the screw on pads when miking high sound pressure level sources. An additional advantage in owning some of these mics is that they are great for a lot of things. Like: acoustic guitars, strings, overheads etc. although I do like large diaphragm condensers better for overheads...

421's for overheads???? Use 'em on the Toms. The 57 is snare materail 100% and if you can't get an RE-20 for the kick, D-12 or D-112 will get ya' in the ballpark. And yes, use a set of clean condensers for OHL/OHR.
Good luck! blas

Yes Blas, I agree...dont use 421's for overheads. I would use AKG 414EB's or maybe a single Sony C500 for Overheads

There is a Shure tom mic, I think the Beta 56, that I like a lot better than the 57 on snare...a fatter sound. I use a 56 on the snare, 52 on the kick and a single NT1 for an overhead.

The Audix d2's for toms and d4 for floor are much better than sm57's, they have a frequency response better tailored for drums and require less eq imo. Senn MD421's are also really good for toms but pretty expensive for a dynamic. For snare you really cant go past the 57 and for kick I like a beta 52 or a beyer m88 for real punch. Overheads akg 451's are great but also look at rode nt5's for a cheap neumann km series copy. BTW the clips in the audix kit are pretty crappy, the shure one's are rock solid.
