i'm in the market for a laptop (pc). i want to run protools le 6.4 on it with an mbox. i have been looking at system requirements and found that the approved chipsets are older than what is available now.

the computer i am looking at is a toshiba satellite P35-S605. it uses a Pentium 4 552 (not on the approved chipset list). i have searched the forums at digidesign only to find that it's a crap shoot: some unapproved chipset work, some don't.

my question is this: where can i find out how this particular chipset works with protools before i buy the computer.

also, can anyone suggest any other pcs that have protools-approved chipsets in the $1500 range?

thanks.

It's better to move on and find something that will do the job for sure, IMHO. Even if the computer is free, your time may not be... how many weeks/months do you want to spend tweaking the thing so it works?

Not only that, but the only assured source of that information is Digidesign.

The problem with any laptop, is that the one that I buy today may differ from the same model that you bought yesterday. They change parts without notification. So maybe the Philbo Brand ethernet chipset that they were using on the Revision B model works with PT, while the Bill Brand replacement that they used in revision C of that model will not work at all.

It is a problem for audio guys. I had a Sony super light and portable that did not work with RME. The newer super light and portable machines from Sony work just fine. You never know.

so, here's what i ended up with: a gateway 7510gx . the chipset (Mobile AMD Athlon™ 64-bit 3700+)was among the list of "unsupported, but haven't heard any problems". it's as fast as the toshiba i was looking at. same size hd; came with more ram (1gig) than the toshiba (512meg).

tonight, i loaded protools 6.4. the computer has xp home with sp2, so i had to do the dep fix so it wouldn't go blue screen when i launched pt. the fix worked.

i tried opening a session with the mbox on one usb port, a midi keyboard on another, and tranzport on another. everything came up fine.

i am one happy camper.
