Hey all!
Long time lurker, 1st time poster...
Does anyone know where I can find a list of all current national networks broadcasting in HD? I think that there are 30 or so, and of course they all want different tape and audio formats...
I'm trying to build a database of everyone's delivery requirements.
Thanks for any help!

What country are you in? Here in the UK, you have BSkyB (or Sky Networks) as well as the BBC. There is also a consortium that is putting together their own satellite (I cannot remember when the launch date is) that will carry BBC, ITV, Channel 4 & Channel 5 and best of all it will all be on the freeview system - no subscriptions required.
It's a minefield though, that is for sure. I read an article in Resolution magazine discussing the Sky Sports Outside Broadcast specs for Audio and it said that they are mixing in 5.1 discrete in the OB trucks, then - and this is unbelievable to me - running it through LCRS encoders for the Lt/Rt streams. Not even DPL II, just straight old-fashioned LCRS matrix encoding with monophonic rears!
Maybe a good place to start would be http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/ for the UK, and they may be able to help out with Europe/Rest of the World as well.
As far as the Audio side goes, I recommend you get set up with Dolby E, as well as Dolby ProLogic II. Dolby E will require hardware encoders, but the DPL II can be done in software, properly licensed by Dolby, in both Standalone encoders & VST plugin encoders from SurCode http://www.surcode.com I can highly recommend both.

Here is a list of national, and some regional, HD broadcasters in the US (I may be missing a couple). This list also includes Voom channels, which I believe are currently only available via Dish Network. I have some specs for Discovery Channel, ESPN and FOX, but I recommend you contact them directly, to get the latest information.
ABC NBC CBS FOX FOX Sports INHD / INHD2 The WB PBS UPN WB YES HD NESN HD MHD (MTV HD) Wealth TV Showtime HD Starz HDTV HBO HD Animania HD (voom) Family Room HD (voom) GamePlay HD (voom) Discovery HD Theater Equator HD (voom) National Geographic Channel HD Film Fest HD (voom) Food Network HD HDNet Movies Kung Fu HD (voom) Monsters HD (voom) World Cinema HD (voom) HDNews (voom) Rave HD (voom) ESPN HD ESPN2 HD NFL Network HD Rush HD (voom) WorldSport HD (voom) Gallery HD HDNet HGTV HD TNT HD Treasure HD Ultra HD (voom) Universal HD Playboy HD

Thanks for all of the great resources!
I am in the US. I have only sent out commercial surround mixes to 3 networks so far - Discovery HD, TNT HD, and FOX HD. All 3 were able to receive a Dolby E encoded mix - we don't have the ability to encode for Dolby E, but we contracted another company to do that. If memory serves me correct... Discovery and TNT wanted Sony HDCAM, while Fox wanted an HDCAM-SR ( but I think with some arm twisting they would have taken a D5 ). Discovery was -10dBfs, TNT and FOX -8dBfs. And BlueSky, you are right about getting current info. Seems to be a moving target, doesn't it?
We really want to push more of our ad clients who are going the HD route to go all the way and do a surround mix. Having as many specs on hand as possible will make the process that much smoother.
The hardest part of all of this? Getting the right tech person on the phone at the network!
Thanks again!
