When did the surroundpro website disappear then?
I know I've been shut away in my little studio lately, but was very surprised to see it redirecting me to the out of date surround expo website.

Has it been taken down, and if so why?

There is no regular Surround Professional magazine (an issue was released at the Surround Expo as the show program). I guess that means there doesn't need to be a website.

There were some great articles that should be available somehow. I realize that the parent company must make a profit.

As I have asked the editors, does that mean that surround has been so successful that it is simply integrated into the audio workflow, and doesn't need it's own specialized focus, or is surround dead?

well maybe they should remove the moderators list "Anthony Savona, Frank Wells, BobbyO"

I think they went south for the decade.

It's getting cold don't you think ?

Not south -- just lurking in the northeast.

The site was taken down to promote the Surround 2005 event. We will be switching it over to promote the Surround Broadcast Conference that we do in Las Vegas the day before NAB. We'll have another issue if Surround Pro there as well.

The old site is still in tact and we will return it (and all the archived articles) shortly.

I personally believe that the reason for the magazine's demise was that it was a niche publication for something that is no longer niche -- you can find surround coverage in all of the audio magazines.

Still, it'd be nice if more consumer pubs picked up on music surround sound.

And although I rarely post, I do check in often and see that members such as Neil and Doug are answering questions here better than I ever could (thanks!).

Glad to hear Surround Pro still has some life. I had picked up a couple issues in the last several years. But, I noticed they were hard to come across. I think my last one was at the LA AES... 4 years?

Anyway... Make sure you renew the web name. "NetworkSolutions.com/whois" shows it expiring in September. I have seen 3 domain names expire on business contacts in the last year. Really embarrasing to drop your site and email for a few days like that...

Are these people still active?

You do bring up a good point in the "niche market" comment. There are a lot of magazines showing the recording industry what-to-use and how-to-use-it when addressing creating surround. But, I think the missing part is how to create consumer desire for surround content. It just isn't there. And, I am not sure what the answer is.

Everyone wants lots of free music. They'll gladly dump hundreds of dollars on every new iPod or Zen that hits the streets. Then, they'll spend hours and hours finding ways to get 128k MP3s for free off some Internet link (OK, some actually pay for it). I made ProLogic-II encoded CDs of some of some of the sessions I did (mostly local piano recitals). Luckily, they played on the boom boxes and car units. The 5.1 thing just didn't register. Even when I converted them to 256k MP3s and played the 5.1 image back... no interested takers.

How to get consumers to want the surround field in more than their DVD movies... that's the elusive ticket, I think.

Thanks AudioMaverick. Ms. Tornabene has left the company, but Mr. Lemmerling is here, and I'll make sure he keeps his eye on all of our Web renewals.

The lack of consumer acceptance of surround music really is disturbing. I know MP3 and iPod are all the rage right now, but for home listening there is room for both.

Hopefully the mainstream music mags like Rolling Stone and Blender will start making a bigger deal of it sometime soon. It provides such an amazing experience for the listener that I can't believe that the masses have heard it and rejected it.

They want it -- they just don't know it yet.

Most of the great unwashed have not heard it.
I honestly believe this to be the case - after all, once you hear a well made 24/96 DVD-A disc, you really don't want anything to do with MP3 again.

It's so easy to spot the difference it's scary how popular MP3 still is - no detail in the top end, no dynamics, nothing.
Give me my DVD-A please!
