I bet theres loads of such posts here, so sorry! But Im creating my home cinema system (TC/DVD player etc) and could do with some adivce on what surround system I should get (UK) i.e make/amp/5.1/6.1/ampage etc....
Im a bit of an audiophile (but not looking for anything stupidly expensive!) but certainly not interested in really budget stuff! Mainly use it for dvd/cinema but also for sacd/dvd-a too!
Also any comments recommendations on the other hardware? - had myeyes on these babies.....
TV - Panasonic '42 PV500 DVD - Pioneer Elite DV-45A (or similar)

Although you'll probably get some great opinions here (I was happy with my DV-45a, add some good British speakers like B&W, Tannoy, Monitor Audio, Linn, etc., and may be a Denon or Onkyo receiver...), if I were you I'd go to http://www.avsforum.com or http://www.stevehoffman.tv. These guys live and breath home theater!

I'm sure you know of Rotel. I just picked up their RSX-1056 receiver for my M&K's, and it sounds amazing! Such a good deal. Huge sound for a 5 x 75 watt receiver. I also eliminated 6 remotes with the learning remote it comes with. BRILLIANT!!! ;-) I can't recommend Rotel equipment enough.

Thanks guys! Eric do you work for Rotel??lol How much did that amp cost if you mind me asking? It does look good - not sure if I should get a 7.1 setup or just stick the 5.1 though... Looking at the B&W speakers too..
Also am I right in saying I need dolby pro logic II to get decent surround from tv signals??

Remember, 5.1 is the delivery format (well, 6.1 with EX, or DTS-ES, where the Center Surround is matrixed to the Ls and Rs), and 7.1 is just a guess by the processor manufacturers that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. IMO spend your money on better 5.1 speakers and electronics than on cheaper 7.1 gear.
Do you receive your TV digitally? Over The Air, Cable, Satellite? If so, sound will be delivered with Dolby Digital, which can carry anywhere from 1 to 5.1 channels of audio. Pretty much any current receiver or processor will include DPLII to decode 2.0 sources, whether they were encoded with Dolby Stereo or not.

Heh..... no, I don't work for Rotel, but I'll spread the love since I sell it. I work for an independent retailer of consumer electronics for my day job. We sell B&W too. Feel free to shoot me any questions on their gear if you have any. I got a price break on the receiver being a seller of their gear, but it retails for $1299 U.S. There's plenty of receivers that have the same surround processing as Doug stated. I just upgraded from a 6 year old Denon receiver, cost around $700 new, so the RSX-1056 was a nice step forward in sound quality in my opinion. Anything you get new these days will have Dolby Pro Logic II processing built in, so TV will sound pretty good. PLII picks up up almost everything in the mix if it was 5.1 in the beginning. It's still 5.1 "Faux" surround, but now and then you get good action in the surrounds if it's a movie being broadcast.
5.1, 6.1, 7.1? Your decision. 7.1 is just processing dependent on which receiver you have. 5.1 works for me for now. My family room isn't very good for anything beyond 5.1. I agree with Doug - spend your money on the best speakers you can get, electronics are second in line. You'll get the most performance for your money in the speaker department. I'm not sure what your price range is, but check out the B&W 600 series for a moderately priced speaker setup. I like their 601's and LCR60. So many good choices out there. Only your ears can tell.
Enjoy!

Thanks for all the info guys! Been thinking hard about this as its a lot of money as im sure you can appreciate!. I have actually chosen a package from the midrange recommendations section of What HiFi (sound & vision)magazine. Any comments on what i intend to get would be appreciated!!
DVD - Denon DVD-2910 (£600) Multichannel Receiver - Arcam AVR250 (£1000) Speaker Package - Quad L Series (£1930) TV - Panasonic-42PV500 (£2500)
Total = £6030 ($10,860) Although I can get these units substantially cheaper than that!!
