If I'm working on a stereo project, my usual procedure is to run my tracks out to my desk, do whatever processing is required and then print the results on an open stereo track in the same project.

I am ASSUMING that I can do the same thing with surround mixing but, as you might imagine, things get considerably more complicated very quickly with SO many options to reach the same goal. I'm using Nuendo 3.0 with a DA7 desk and I currently have two workable configurations.

Nuendo Surround/DA7 Monitor
1) Every channel in my N3 project is a surround channel which I port out to my DA7 which is divided into Four Surround Matrix Blocks. That means Block One is L,R,C,SW,LR & RR, with this same pattern repeating 3 more times for a total of 24 lgihtpipe channels. The DA7 allows for a Level Mode: Adjust each signal directly or Jog & Fader Mode: Place the signal in the surround field wherever you want. For this configuration, I'm using Level mode with ONLY ONE ACTIVE LINE PER CHANNEL (IE: Ch. 1 = L while R through RR are muted. Ch. 2 = R while L & C through RR are muted. Ch 3 = C with L, R, & SW through RR are muted. You get the idea.) Now, when I move a signal in the N3 channel's sound field, it shows up in the one or combination of speakers I'm monitoring.

Nuendo Mono/DA7 Surround Mixer
2) Every channel in my N3 project is a mono channel panned hard left or right and ported to the DA7 in Jog & Fader Mode. Now all surround ports are open on each of the 24 DA7 channels and I can place the signal in the surround field there. Obviously, this is a much simpler configuration.

So the question now comes down to which configuration will offer me the simplest method of printing it?

If I run the data to the desk, I can process it with outboard gear. But if I need to process the signal with a plug, do I have to make that specific channel a surround channel in N3? On the other hand, if I automate movement on a DA7 channel, will that movement print onto the surround mixdown channels?

Bottom line, when all is said and done, I'LL HAVE TO RENDER THE FILES IN NUENDO in order to send it over to the DVD processing and burning. So I want to be sure all of my mix is present and performing properly when it's transferred to disc.

I hope you guys all understand this question as I'm having a lot of confusion about how to express what I don't understand about this.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

A surround software mixer works a little differently. It does most of the complicated things for you. Since pictures speak better, here is a page from my web site with some Cool edit screen captures. The process will be similar in other apps, I am guessing...
Cool Edit Surround Mixer

Hope that helps...
