Hi, I would like to know what sound card would decode the stereo output from a satellite receiver to surround sound.
I have a soundblaster live! 5.1 but cannot seem to get any rear channel info.
I have an ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe with 8 ch sound, but this is distorted with the output of the satellite receiver plugged into the line in.
I would like to dispense with the stand alone Por Logic amplifier and use my PC for all sound inputs.
Please could you help?
Regards,
Jay

If you are talking about the analogue outputs, then you ain't gonna do this with a soundblaster live.

The analogue outs are, at best, using a matrixed version of Dolby Surround - and only on programmes that are broadcast with this signal.
This has to go into an AV amplifier with Dolby ProLogic II decoders.

All Soundblasters resample to 48KHz, and doing this will kill the matrix.

The question is, Are you sure the stuff coming from the satelite receiver is surround encoded? I would be very surprised if it is.

If the Audio from the satellite reviever was originally Dolby Surround, Dolby ProLogic or ProLogic II matrix encoded, then the analogue outputs from the satellite box will still be matrix encoded to give you a surround output at the decoder.
Once a stereo file with Matrix surround has been encoded, the only way to break the matrix is to take that stereo file and "remaster" it, which will destroy the matrix. Even original CD's made from the same SQ encoded masters will decode to L/R/Ls/Rs or LRCS when played back through the correct decoder.
If you can get digital output from your satellite reciever, and the Audio is surround encoded, then again the output will decode correctly. Simple.
