I've got a Panasonic DVD Player that has an optical out, which I connected to my Kenwood Surround Receiver. It plays fine.

I can run my DA7 through this same optical connection to the Kenwood to listen to files coming from Nuendo. It plays fine.

But if I run the DVD Player via it's optical out into the DA7, so that I can analyze commercial releases, I get nothing.

Anybody have a clue as to why that is?

....I don't think the DA7 has Dolby Digital or DTS decoding built in, which it would need to understand the surround light pipe signal.

The surprising thing to me is that the Kenwood would understand a non-encoded surround signal from the DA7.

If, on the other hand, you are talking about a stereo TOSlink signal over light pipe, the Kenwood would tend to see that readily a la a CD player, but the output of the DVD player would be some version of Dolby Digital which would not be decodable at the DA7.

The third possibility (for a non-encoded signal only) is that the DA7 on the input side is not set up to see a stereo-only light pipe signal. Most light pipe connections that are capable of 8 channels need to be told via software that the 2 channel signal only is coming in. The protcol is not the same for these 2 different uses of light pipe.

Keyplayer.
When you are playing these DVD's, are they DVD-Video or DVD-Audio?
And as Mudsmith asks, are you trying to output raw Dolby Digital or DTS streams if using DVD-V?
If using multichannel DVD-A, then you cannot actually use the digital outs as all audio output goes through the RCA outputs on the back of the player.

Keyplayer: It's a DVD-A disc. But I never used the 6 RCA Outs with the Player into the receiver, just the optical cable. That's why I thought it would play into the DA7.

Later I tried importing it directly into Nuendo. But, as I'm sure you already know, that didn't fly either. So now I'm open to any suggestions on how to analyze these recordings besides just listening. I really wanted to be able to disect these mixes.

Odd.
Most, if not all the DVD-A I own, will not output through the digital outputs unless I am playing them in DTS or Dolby Digital mode. To use the high Res options, you simply must hook up the 6 RCA's.
There is no way to rip the disc either - it's not possible to do this. What you can do is play the thing straight into Nuendo, and record the input at 24/96 though.
