I've seen on the "Musikmesse Frankfurt" a surround recording stand from this company web page .
does anybody know if it's work?

Looks like a series of microphones in an array.
Nothing new there - check for Soundfield mics.
Cannot remember the URL off the top of my head though.

Hi,

It appears to me to be a 5.1 (actually 6.0) microphone stand.

I would be interested in knowing what others are using for field recording (5 channels). A small somewhat compact 5 or 6 channel battery powered digital recorder (24-bit/96k) with phantom power that is under $2000 US would be great:)

I have been using a MOTU 896 for about a year now, with superb results. I've done several stage performances with it and, usually, five studio condenser mics. Of course, it's connected to a laptop as a DAW. I use Sony Vegas in field recording because it streams each channel to disk, such that when I'm finished, it merely has to close the files, which appears to happen instantly. Some of the other DAW software streams to an intermediate file and then takes a while to write the 10 GB or so of audio data to separate files after you stop recording (depending on the laptop drive, that could take up to 45 minutes.)
For me, ultimate audio quality was the benchmark, so dragging along my Sony VAIO laptop was not such a bad thing.

There are, of course, the dedicated, portable HD recorders designed for the film industry (notably the DEVA and the new HHB). These units are thoroughly pro and portable, but cost considerably more than your budget.

I don't know of any multichannel, battery operable unit that is anywhere near your budget except for some sort of laptop conglomeration....even this will require some extra cash to get either the interface or external hard drives running from battery.

Some film/TV people have made their units "portable" by putting together battery and inverter rigs....I remember an MTV series that used DA78s with batteries and inverters.

For ambient work, there is little better than the SoundField. Due to its close capsule proximity, almost no phase cancellation at hi freq like you get with arrays, so the mic has "you are there" imaging but less channel separation.

For recording platforms, you have two steps with SF, recording 4 channel B format and then "decoding " to whatever the final delivery is (stereo, 5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1). SInce its just a 4 channel recording, using a Metric Halo , a Deva, a MOTU or a tascam hi8 machine all work fine. Its the in field power that kills ya...so that's where the DEVA does best and some of the newer broadcast field recorders.
