If you're mixing a surround project with a DAW (in my case Nuendo 3.0) AND a desk ( I'm using a Panasonic DA7) with surround mixing infrastructure, which one do you let do the actual surround routing?
Do I: A) Let Nuendo handle all of the surround routing and just route the stems through the 8 busses?
B) Set the tracks as normal mono/stereo tracks and place them in the surround field via the desk's surround channels?
C) Use both, in that I let Nuendo handle the surround duties, but set up the desk's surround channels in a "cloned fashion" for more "accuarate (??)" routing?
D) Another option of which I'm currently unaware?

i route direct from the RME interface to active monitors and mix with the virtual mixer, but i'm a composer and desktop producer.
For mix, i would say a pro engineer prefers a console with real faders for comfort, and the light speed touch with no latency.

Oh I don't know.... Sometimes I am just about ready to order a full control surface for Nuendo, but then I realise there are many more things I can spend the money on. After all - to do a real job, you need full control over the host, not just partial control, and for Nuendo I have yet to see anything other than the iD controller that gives full access. Everything else is partial only - so what really is the point? Even PT users know the value of a proper interface, which is why there is the very comprehensive - and expensive - Pro24 controller.
My main gripe with the generic controllers is that they are jack of all, master of none.
So, until I can justify the iD, I'll stay "in the box" and link from my RME HDSP9652 straight into the external converters, from there into an old analogue console and from there direct into active monitors. Works a treat, nothing gets in the way.

Neil, You really did hit a nerve with the statement 'jack of all, master of none!' I added the HUI to our control room and at best mildly- almost-happy. I still spend too much time f***in' with a mouse. Yet, the price of the ID is out of our range here! I'm telling you, if someone paired up with the new owners and put out a REASONABLE priced Nuendo controller, I'd believe they could keep up with the orders (then again, I'm speakin' of those of us that grew up on consoles that had a channel strip for each track....hundreds of buttons and knobs and faders). I'm waitin' !!! blas

All the generic controllers handle the basic stuff at best.
