hi

I've recently set up for 5.1 and currently have my monitors rigged up directly to my audio interface outputs. The works but is not ideal since I have to controll the level from within my audio program. So I am looking for a solution to control all levels at once after they come out from the interface and into the monitors. I have active monitors. I was thinking of buying a hi fi 5.1 reciever with line outputs for each channel. The outputs would be on unballanced rca plugs. I'd appriaciate anyones opinions on if this would be an effective solution or if you can forsee any pitfalls for that method.

also if there are any alternative solutions (baring in mind I have a limited budget!)

thanks in advance!

Simon

That's what I'm using at home - on a limited budget. RME MultiFace|Sherwood Receiver|Bass Manager|JBS LSR 25p speakers

Keep in mind that the receiver will only control the level - no bass management or other processing will occur on the passthrough signal.

Hi.

Consider the SPL Surround Monitor Controller.
http://www.spl-usa.com/smc/smc_E.html

Try some internet research on this unit. I believe if you shop around you can find it new for around $650. You'll need adapter cables which convert its 1/4" TRS output to XLR. This should be better than converting from RCA (don't have to deal with unbalanced signals), also you can easily extend the cable length however needed with a standard XLR mic cables.

Good wishes.

Try checking into the Denon AVD-2000 unit. We use it here to feed our surround monitors. Not too costly and gives the one knob control you need!
Let me know what you think.

hi

I ended up buying a marantz sr4400 for monitoring. I am having a few teething problems with hum (yes unballanced outputs I know..) but I am going to do a bit of studio rewire to see if I can solve the problem.

cheers

Simon
