I just bought one, (for the second time). I was trying to explain the "reverse hydrid" nature of this synth to a friend, and I realized I don't understand it myself.

It has 16 "digital waveforms" available in a "wavetable". Are these actually digitally recorded samples like in a rompler synth? But you would not call this a rompler, I think?

My understanding is that the rest of this synth, e.g. the filter, is all analog except for the built in digital delay effect.

Slightly different subject; has anyone used the Angel City "dw turbo" upgrade? I admit I haven't researched myself yet, and there's probably some info out there. I thought someone might have some experience with it.

Thanks!

I'm an original owner of a DW-8000. If your definition of rompler is that of a sampler with it's samples in ROM, the DW-8000 does not quite meet this definition. It is billed (on the cover of the owner's manual) as a programmable digital waveform synthesizer. In essence it is a two oscillator, subtractive, 8 voice polyphonic synthesizer.

It is hybrid in that it is implemented as a hybrid of analog and digital circuitry. It has sixteen oscilllator waveforms stored in digital memory (single periods of the waveforms are pictured in the manual and there are no layers or multi-samples I can hear). It also a digital delay effect. I belive you are correct in that the rest of the signal path is (digitally-controlled) analog circuitry.

I don't have details on the Angel City mod, sorry.

Happy New Year, Steve

Thanks for the info. This may be dumb, but what exactly are these single-cycle digital waveforms? Are they actually small digitally recorded samples that are looped?

yes, I think that they are PCM encoded samples. But just like the Casio CZ-series, I doubt that anyone would call it a Rompler, even if the definition technically overlaps. I think the first ROMpler would be the PPG Wave or some Voyetra thing, although even those aren't really considered ROMplers. I think the M1/D50 era is where you first started hearing the term.
