Mixing Rap/Pop Vocals - 01/08/12 06:05 PM

Hey guys, thanks for reading my thread, I'm new here and I can't wait to learn a lot from you guys, and hopefully eventually I will be able to contribute. Here is my question:
Do you have any tips on how to mix a rap/pop vocal? That is how hard to compress it, how much reverb to apply, all while keeping its dynamics? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, reverb isn't even a factor very much these days - if you can hear the echo, it's too much.

Regarding reverb. I start with it all the way down then slowly slide it up until it is just detectable and then stop.
As far as compression, it depends on the vocalist. Some need lots of compression, others considerably less.

Curious - do you primarily base that decision on the dynamic of the vocal (how much the volume moves up and down)? Or a weak voice versus a strong vocal, or something else?

Yes. Based on the dynamics of the vocal.

Not just the dynamics of the vocal, but the ability of the vocalist to recognize the need to pull away from the mic when they get loud. In other words, if you have a dolt singer who doesn't move from the spot directly in front of the screen, you'll have to compress a lot more than if you have a real pro who backs up when they're belting and comes in close when they're singing quietly...
