I've had moments in my life when I think Elton John's Levon is just about the best song ever written, and I'm in another one of those moments, so over the past week or so I've been listening to as many versions of him playing Levon that I can find.

I love this one (man he was such a good singer before he had the vocal chord problems) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv71baBUrSk

I haven't listened to much music lately. Kinda tired of everything.

In the car, I generally either listen to talk radio or nothing at all.

I used to spend hours sitting and listening to music at home. (Of course, I was single then, had a lot more free time).

I used to love Radio Paradise. Listened to it all day every day at work, when I had a coworker who shared similar musical taste. Some people can't "handle" it. I know that sounds arrogant, but for some people, if it ain't overplayed classic rock, it sucks. I loved Radio Paradise; I have heard and purchased so much different music because of that station.

Now, at work, when my current coworker leaves for the day, and I get to shut off the classic rock, the silence is nice. I can still hear a little of the "house" music from the other room. The ceiling speaker in my office has a volume dial, so I keep it turned off.

Man, this is sounding really depressing. Sorry to be a downer. I'm just kinda tired of music right now.

Sounds like you just need to find something that excites you again. Give it time.

Kind of sad, but I generally only listen to the songs that I happen to be learning for the cover band(s) at any given time. So currently:

Zombies - "She's Not There"
Mama's and Papas - "California Dreamin"
Jimi Hendrix - "Fire"
Led Zepplin - "Good Times, Bad Times"
The Grass Roots - "Midnight Confessions"
(we're working building our 60's set)

After practice Thursday, that'll change.

Quercus by June Tabor and friends (on ECM).

Some tasty piano by Huw Warren and even tastier sax by Iain Bellamy. Of course, June's voice could soothe the most jaded nerves even when singing the usual doom-laden Brit folk songs.

Listening to a lot of Gospel tracks, since I'm working on my annual Gospel/Symphony orchestrations. Kirk Franklin is quite an amazing musician and writer, this one is going to sound great with a full symphony:
Disc 2 of this:

Each year, Hed Kandi Records releases a 2-CD set of chillout music; this is the 2002 edition, which may still be the best one.

That song is the 2012-2013 gospel equivalent of what Adele's "Someone Like You" was to 2011-2012 pop...meaning I've heard it waaayyy more times than I'd listen to any one song by choice! Don't get me wrong. That's not a criticism. Quite the opposite. It's a modern classic thu But as a--hack of a--church musician, I've heard enough singers cover this song (and seen enough praise dancers interpret it...) in my travels to last a lifetime laugh

And you're right, it should be absolutely sublime with a full orchestra! If this annual event is something you guys record, please share. I'd love to check it out.

Interesting. I've never heard it before as I don't really follow Gospel except for this project, so I don't know which ones are the "hits" or not. Here's another one, I'm assuming it's very popular as I see a ton of versions on Youtube:
Posted By: SHaka40 Re: What are you listening to right now? - 11/20/13 02:16 AM
As for me, I've been listening to this:

It's what I've come to expect from Glasper, with his distinctive blend of jazz, neo-soul and hip-hop. Time will tell if I'll give it as many spins as the 1st Black Radio project, but it's certainly in the same ball-park sonically (btw: where's Chris Dave? maybe just too busy to commit to another project so soon?). Think I'm ready for another Robert Glasper Trio project, or some other more acoustic-leaning stuff though.

...and I've also checked this out within the last month or so...

First Jonelle Monae cd I've bought. I find it a lot easier to support young artists who are unique and seem to take the artistry of what they're doing seriously, even if it may not be a style or genre I'd normally listen to. While I think Monae still has room to grow vocally--don't get me wrong, she's got the pipes and range to spare, but I think her instrument will get even more polish, confidence and maturity as she develops as an artist--I'd say the production, creativity, energy and sincerity of this album more than makes up for it! And I hear her live shows are spectacular.

...and of course I always keep my full catalog of Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Bill Evans, George Duke, various gospel etc. close at hand.

Yeah, that's definitely a hit (I believe my church's Mass Choir did that one for our Easter service), though not to the degree of "Take Me To The King." In general, the ensemble/praise and worship/Kirk Franklin (at least the stuff he's done over the last 10 years or so) style of music has overtaken traditional choir stuff like the Malcolm Williams song in terms of prominence in black gospel. That's probably overgeneralizing it a bit, but that's been the trend over the last decade or so, at least to my eyes/ears.

Morrissey "Last of the Famous International Playboys". Seriously.
because it's the first song of some 80s originals CD. And even a number of my enhancing effects are on, so it's somewhat fun.

At night, regularly a selection from Radio10, luckily without the mixes being messed up, so extremely bearable.

Recently, I listened to:

Golden Earring - demo of latest CD
From High Definition sources: Ellington, Art Blakey, Dr. John, McCoy Tyner, Prince, Depeche Mode, James Taylor, Megadeth

Joe Jackson

RtF live, Bluray

Black Ice - Ac/Dc (my own remix from official CD having cost 6,66)

Sometimes "WBGO"

Ah, now the CD is at "Talk Talk"^2.

We play Lido Shuffle in my band. That's one of those that is sort of unenjoyable to play because you're busy trying to cover so many parts (piano, brass with swells, synth) at the same time and none of the parts are really very interesting. It's just kind of like busy work.

This guy, Edward Powell:

He played a show here a week ago, and my wife and I were both pretty blown away. Picked up all of his CD's. Very nice Indian/Arabic acoustic fusion stuff. The wife has been playing his stuff non-stop lately, and I don't mind.

Also, picked up the new Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited: Live at the Hammersmith yesterday, haven't watched the DVD's yet, but spun the CD's strait through about 4 times yesterday while trouble-shooting some IT stuff at work. Sounds great!

I also got the new Painkiller (John Zorn, Bill Laswell, and, this time, Tatsuya Yoshida from the Ruins on drums) live CD, but haven't had the time and mental space to spin it yet. Expecting it to be pretty intense.

What I listen to is not normally what I play and what I play for $$$ is not what I like to compose. Sometimes when writing I'll hit that dreaded writer's block. When I do, I throw this on and the ideas start to bubble. Love the synth work and clever evolution of this. Other albums are equal cool.

Eminem's new album (Marshall Mathers LP 2), which may just be his best studio release ever.

And a song by a band called The Kin called "Everything's Changing." They're a Keane-like trio that my wife and I saw open for Pink at Verizon Center recently, and this particular song is just really darn catchy. There are no great youtube videos of it, but here's an early live version that's pretty good:

There are parts of it that are good. Particularly in the middle of it. I'm not into a lot of the newer Hip Hop, but you can definitely hear the Odd Future influences here. I at least made it through the whole thing, which speaks more than the Yeezus record.

A few Tierney Sutton lp's. Excellent trio platform for her vox.
The trio is smokin, the pianist is exc and they do some of the best arrgmts of some of the most overplayed tunes on anyones set list. Very refreshing.

Thanks for the heads up on something new from Golden Earring - will go find it now!

I change my playlist frequently, and am always looking for new music to add. My current playlist is pretty varied, but is dominated by this :

Seether (almost everything they've done)
Yes - Fragile (always in every playlist)
Muse - The Resistance
Toadies - Rubberneck
John Prine - a few favorites, including Illegal Smile and Pissin in the Wind
Al Green - I always have at least a few of his in my list

A few oldies but oft-forgotten goodies in my current list :

Badfinger - Day After Day
The Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get It Right
Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That
Point Blank - Oh Nicole
Tommy James - Draggin' the Line
Edgar Winter Group - Autumn
Little River Band - The Night Owls

Many thanks for the correction about Ray Price's death... Once again, I'm burned by cyber-gossip misinformation on the internet.

In any case, I enjoyed listening to some real Honky Tonk country which has all but disappeared from today's over-produced and "pop-ified" contemporary country music scene.

Picked up 2 albums last week, by a pair of very different bands, that had some surprising similarities:

Jaga Jazzist: Live with the Britten Sinfonia

BTW, nice keyboard setup: I see a Nord and a Moog Voyager, and more.

Secret Chiefs 3: Book of Souls Folio A

Both albums deal with combining instrumental, prog-ish rock with orchestration, and do so surprisingly well. The Jaga disc is live, while the Chiefs disc was tracked over the last decade or so. The Jaga disc is jazzier, where the Cheifs veer into metal, middle Eastern rock and general weirdness. Both are pretty great.

I saw Uriah Heep in Atlanta in "73 at the Municipal Auditorium. I was 16, and it was the tour for "Demon's and Wizards". We rushed the stage, and I was about 15 feet from the band. At that moment, there was no place on earth I would rather have been.
At this moment I'm listening to

Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials from Roughhousin' the track called Mean Old Frisco.

[video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJWJHyWSmqY#t=1842

while I'm working on starting up my 100+ effects automatically, after yesterday I've been able to loop the Lexicon through them, to improve the sound of most A grade (and other) recordings. I made some nice labels for the meter bridges, so it should become easier to read, just a pity it's a problem to share the results (very worth while by now, seriously):

Thanks. Well, there's mid-averaging, anti-clip-component, global and individual mid low sub-bands, anti-low compression, Lexicon (mainly the different kinds of reverb) 4-band expanding, reverse-CD equalization, some low-end restoration (for like, big stereos), 3 band anti sampling-spoiling effect, sub-low from high freqs restoration, and compressed high averaging, all at 192 kHz 32 bits stereo. Gets the extreme PC nicely warm!

I'm listening to some board recordings from my last night's gig - and am pleasantly surprised at both how good the recordings turned out (they're "dirty" recordings created by routing a rough "AUX mix" of all instruments to one channel, a rough "AUX mix" of just the vocals, and two channels captured from ambient mics placed one on each side of the stage into a little 4 Zoom recorder) - AND - how decent our raw performance was (disregarding the mix completely). In the big scheme of things, what I'm hearing on the recordings pretty much aligns with how I felt about the gig when I was actually playing it.

If you don't have the re-issue, the below track will do.

The Healthy Dose, a kind of groovy/proggy trio from Portland. The drummer is an old friend and former bandmate of mine. The keyboardist/singer had a nice setup, a Rhodes 54 through a bunch of effects, and a Prophet 08.

Yeah, I thought they were great. I've seen them a few times live and the guitar player is definitely the least lively of the four, but he was more subdued than usual tonight...I'm guessing he was a bit nervous. He is also primarily a trumpet player, so I don't think he buys into the guitar hero thing :-)

Don't know if you saw the interview, but they all met up in your neck of the woods (New England Conservatory).

Listening to a lot of synth pop, working up synth sounds for the K.

George Duke "Funny Funk".

I recorded a 96k/24b version on SSD yesterday evening (more like night, using headphones) from a processed version originally from the MPS Fusion Recordings CD. I used midfreq. averaging with new additions (using a graphical side band gate from "calf"), including an anti-clip signal, serious CD correction equalizing (11 bands) and some other stuff, and it sounds as funky now on the speakers as it did on headphones!

At this moment, this track, from the Live in Munich 1977 DVD:

Nice classic keyboard setup, B3, Mellotron, and Clav, and (not 1 but) two Minimoogs! I'm not familiar with Don Stone, but he sounds great here. If you can make it through the guitar wankery and Beethoven quotes, there's a 2nd unaccompanied key solo at 10:55, starts on Clav, ends on the dual Minis.

I've long been a Joe Jackson fan and I'm always intrigued at the groups of people he puts together. Just found this full-length show from the Olympia in Paris, from the time of the Duke tour. Can't say I'm 100% on board with the Duke arrangements, but the revisits of his own tunes are fantastic. One blues riff by Benmont Tench on Tom Petty's "Into the Great Wide Open" in the second verse. Very simple, but very tasteful, very nicely placed in the song. Love the sound of the Wurly. It's his only riff in the song though.

Agreed! I play that often in my Petty Tribute.

Tonight though listening to Mountain's Yasgurs Farm, theme From Imaginary Western, and Nantucket Sleighride. They don't make bands with tone like that anymore! I just love the overdriven organ and guitar combinations.

I was watching a bit of the DVD version at out bass players place. Chuck was taking a great piano solo and it took the camera guy a minute or so to show him. No respect.

Been listening to a lot of Toy Matinee/3rd Matinee lately. Awesome songwriting and musicianship!

Jazz futures sounds cool.Headhunters: yeah! Somechief: makes me feel agressive in urban language that's not suitable for repetition, don't like. Coller: it's of course some sort of interesting product, but it doesn't speak a musical language I master or feel like learning. Third matinee, year well, interesting parts (well recognized from all kinds of great tracks), but the productions to me sounds kind of wrong, maybe a pro studio should be able to do better on those licks and pop-figures.

To answer the OPs question:

Picked up 2 new CD's this week, and am listening at work.

First up: Steven Wilson: Cover Version

Covers include tunes by ABBA, The Cure and Alanis Morrissette, and the above Prince tune. Most of the tunes are recorded pretty intimately, Wilson plays all the instruments, very different from his recent solo material. Sign O' The Times is the highlight, IMHO, but it's a very nice, low key album

Now Playing: Interstatic: Arise

Modern hammond trio stuff with Roy Powell on B3, Jakob Young on guitar and Jarle Vespestad on drumns. I was introduced to this trio by forum member OrangeFunk, and picked up an earlier album that I enjoyed a lot. The older album really reminded me of John Abercrombie's organ trio work of the '90's, very beautiful, kind of ambient. This new record rocks a lot harder, in fact moments almost sound like an updated version of Tony Williams original Lifetime lineup. Very impressed on first listen!

After catching Janiva Magness last night at the Regatta Bar in Cambridge, I picked up her two most recent CDs.
And I'm digging the hell out of them.

The show was easily among the best I've seen/heard in a decade, and I don't say sh*t like that lightly.

I've got a special love for the blues/soul genre as both listener and player. The execution during last night's show combined a curator's reverence for the genre with an innovator's drive to make it better.

Our friend from this very forum, Jim Alfredson, did terrible, wonderful things to his rig (SK1 and PX5S). A residue of funk is going to be dripping down the walls in that joint for weeks to come.

Janiva oozed rock power out of her pores. Hearing her sing - it was like being hit with a fire hose blasting out 200$/bottle cabernet sauvignon.

They were a freaking super-group - vocals, bass, drums, keys and guitar all raging badasses with impeccable taste.

In other words it was a really good show.

I gave it its first proper spin last night. There are some great musical moments that sunk in immediately -- some of the other sections might take a few more listens. It sounds fresh. My favorite Tangent albums are COMM and Le Sacre Du Travail. This one might turn out to be just as good. It's a smattering of musical styles. Dansant Dans Paris immediately reminded me of the theme song from The Love Boat. Why do you say you need to work up the courage?

Reliving this unbelievable performance.

I can't seem to figure out how to embed a Dailymotion video, but it's Justin Timberlake's pre-20/20 Experience Fallon performance. 10 minute medley of his prior hits with a couple sweet teases thrown for spice.

Adam Blackstone is the baddest of them all. Between this and the 20/20 Experience Tour, which I saw... No one arranges with the same prowess these days, other than Michael League. JT's band is probably the best pop band on the planet right now.

Gotta agree with my fellow Canadian - while I love the Roots, I can't really say that their arrangements (in the orchestration sense of the term) are anywhere near the level of writing in Snarky Puppy or JT's current live band. Nice to hear that "neo-soul" sense of arrangement (like the Jill Scott live record) in modern pop, bringing back that EWF & Quincy Jones sensibility.

Today i downloaded the new MMW + Scofield cd "Juice" which i liked a lot. I had some time to like a MMW cd and their latest show i saw in Istanbul (with Niels Kline) was not great IMHO. But tis one i liked a lot. The classic MMWS sound + real themes, almost like songs. They also cover two or three classics (Sunshine of your love, Light my fire, The times they are a-changin).
I also donwloaded Brad Mehldau's latest duet "Mehliana: Taming the dragon". Nice electronic stuff with lots of arpegiators, rolands, synth bass, and some twisted delayed rhodes solos.

Got my vinyl copy of the new Aphex Twin in the mail today. Seriously freaking good. I've played it a couple times through, and it gets better with each listen.

Picked up a few new albums this week. Currently spinning:

It's very good, not as extreme as some of his material. He'll probably get a lot of critical flack for merely producing a good album when his reputation and the time he's taken to produce this would almost demand a genre-changing masterpiece, but I'm quite enjoying it.

Just finished spinning the new Opeth album, Pale Communion:
Pale Communion follows in the same vein as their last studio album, Heritage, in that it's basically a prog-rock album, and a very good on at that. There's not a trace of the band's black metal roots, though the record occasionally leans to the heavier side. While I don't discount all things metal, I actually think that Opeth are stronger as a prog band than as a metal band. Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals are strong, he reminds me of John Wetton at times, a younger Ian Anderson at others. There's lots of Hammond, Mellotron and Analog synths here. There are lots of reviews on Opeth's new direction comparing them to Yes and Genesis, but, honestly, I thing the overall effect is closer to early Kansas, and I in no way mean that as a dig, I loved Kansas back in the day, they were one of my first concerts. Like them, Opeth is very capable, melodic hard rock band with progressive tendencies. Pale Communion is mixed by Steven Wilson, meaning it sounds amazing.

Earlier today, listened to the new Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood album Juiced:

Frankly, it's leaving me a little underwhelmed. It feels like the kind of album they could crank out in afternoon without breaking a sweat. They include some of classic rock covers here, a smooth-jazz take on Light My Fire that is the moment that turned me against the record, a decent dub version of Sunshine of Your Love, and the album ends with a quite lovely, understated arrangement of Dylan's The Times They Are A'Changin'. It's not a terrible album by any means, just, after hearing their collaboration with Nels Cline, Which is awesome, I think I just expected something more.

You reminded me of this very rare recording of the Yellowjackets backing Gino Vannelli on his second biggest hit:

sick

Is there anything Yellowjackets didn't slather Velveeta all over? The original version is superior. Way more drama.
Posted By: Synthaholic Re: What are you listening to right now? - 09/29/14 01:29 PM
I agree. I'm not a big fan of this version, or really, any of Gino's remakes of his older songs. The originals are near-perfect for me.

They are pretty impressive live, though. I saw them open for Larry Carlton in 1987 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Tampa. Fantastic players, especially Haslip.

I get it. It's actually an ok band. The bass player is clearly the strongest player within the trio of girls. I'm sure this was Prince just trying to create a pretty backdrop for himself. Having listened to the record, his tone and soloing are still top-notch.
Posted By: MAJUSCULE Re: What are you listening to right now? - 09/30/14 06:44 PM
Oh, that's Frank Lucas's old drummer, Hannah Ford. Yeah, sounds to me like she's the rockier part of the rhythm section in the funk-rock mélange. Not sure how I feel about it. What I've heard of Art Official Age is phaaaat, though.

On the subject of killin' female drummers, how about that Anika Nilles?

You're Dead is pretty freaking awesome! It's pretty short, 39 minutes, and explores a bunch of ideas. Herbie is all over the first few tracks, and they could almost be excepts from Mwandishi! Even Snoop Dogg sounds good on the album. One of the best albums I've heard this year, not bad for a concept album about death.

Deodato - Prelude. That is the CD with the version of Also Sprach Zarathustra that has the Rhodes solo and became a hit many years ago. Sadly, it also seems to be one of those songs that sounded much better when I was just learning to play keys in cover bands.

It is not as good as I remembered.

Nice! Will have to check that out later! I caught this band on Monday, here in Corvallis:

They only play tunes that make it to #1 on the pop charts. Charlie Hunter still blows my mind every time I see him, watching him play is like watching someone play 3D chess on a fretboard. Steven Bernstein is a hell of a trumpet player, and one funny dude.

I ordered the Relayer Steven Wilson remix/remaster, but it's still back-ordered from my distributor. But I saw that I had missed this when it came out, so I ordered it as well. First time through at the moment, and only the stereo mix, it doesn't seem like as drastic an improvement as Close to the Edge, but still sounds terrific. Definitely more clarity and separation of the parts. The alternate versions are pretty interesting as well. Really looking forward to getting Relayer, that was always one of my favorite Yes albums, and I can't wait to hear what Wilson has done with it.

Exclusive: Listen to Hiatus Kaiyote’s new EP
Jon Batiste, Bill Laswell, Chad Smith: The Process

Picked this up today, and am really enjoying it so far. I've been a fan of Laswell since the Material days, but wasn't that familiar with Batiste, what Batiste does here is quite different from his work with Stay Human, some very nice B3 and distorted EP work, plus some almost Jarret-like piano interludes. This has that sorta dubby, sorta jazzy vibe of a lot of Laswell's work, but is a little more concise and polished, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
"The Process" sounds really cool. Love the concept of scoring a non-existent movie.

I'm playing this tune with one of my school's showcase/corporate bands. Sounds pretty different with a six-piece horn section and live players, but I really like both!

At this very moment, I'm listening to a band cover Dr. John - without a keyboard in sight. Pretty impressive: the bass player is all over his six-string, and the guitarist is splitting between clav parts on a guitar synth, and hitting guitar fills/leads. Not bad....

I've been listening (as of this morning, in the car) to 'The Art Of McCartney' album. I listened to all of CD 1, and most of CD 2. As a long-time Paul fan I was impressed with almost every song. There were only one or two (covers) that I didn't care for. Lots of 'heavy hitters' on this album. I thought the producer did a good job of pairing the right artist or band with the right song/s. Some tasty keys parts too, including Harry Connick Jr. taking a Jazzy piano solo on 'My Love'--that is for sure a stand out track. I liked the Dr. John one ('Let 'Em In') too.

Cedar Walton's "Manhattan Afternoon" is planted in heavy rotation in my car stereo and doesn't want to know about coming out. grin
All standards, with a jam session spirit - but nothing sounds "improvised" in these improvisations. smile

What an understated genius Cedar was! A veritable encyclopedia of hard bop gestures, with a swinging sense of time and a melodic instinct that sound just "right" to the ear.
The Teddy Wilson of hard bop.

I saw Birdman, that was him playing drums? 85% of the score was just solo drums and those cameos were at perfect moments in the film. What a film!

He's always pulled from that well. I'm only really hearing blatant Prince-isms in "Ain't That Easy" and "Prayer."
Posted By: Dana. Re: OT - What are you listening to right now? - 12/15/14 07:55 PM
It's not at all a criticism. I'm all for people channeling Prince. It's the reason I think The Element of Freedom is easily Alicia Keys' best album. For example:

Also, "Yamaha" by The-Dream is a total homage to "Little Red Corvette."

The only great track on the last Joe record is also totally copping the Prince thing.

I just listened to the intro from "NCIS New Orleans".

Despite the considerable cheese on this album -- or perhaps, in part, because of -- I still enjoy it. Definitely that last great album Sting made. David Sancious on (sometimes dated-sounding) keys, and Vinnie C. with absolutely cracking snare sounds.

I'm going to double dip here. I've been listening to some songs that don't have keyboard tracks, but I my own interpretation of them using keyboards. I think they are nicely written and moving. Lately I'm focusing on songwriting and my own take on covers.

At this moment, I'm hearing this album for the first time:

It's really quite beautiful. Potter's string writing is really nice, and the strings integrate into the jazz ensemble very nicely and non-forced.

Previous it was the new Daniel Lanois:

Really beautiful, lush-sounding stuff, all instrumental. I saw Lanios a few years ago when he toured with the Tortoise as his opening act and backing band, and that remains one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Yesterday, it was all about the new King Crimson: Live at the Orpheum. Brilliant playing, but only 41 minutes long, which seems rather chintzy given that they were playing 2-3 hour shows on the tour. The closest they came to me was Seattle, and I had a gig and couldn't go, but friends who did said it was life-changing.
Tangerine Dream: Zeit/Nebulous Dawn

Seemed a bit dark to me at the time it came out, appreciating it more now.

Was coming home in the car with my wife tonight from the theatre. The local college station, which usually plays the standard emo fare, played "21st Century Man."

Next up was "Close to the Edge." Had to sit in the driveway and wait for the pipe organ climax of "I Get Up."

speaking of Daniel Lanois, I found this on WFUV site. He was a studio guest. Here he is all over the knobs and sliders/programming .... I found it fun to watch. He is an amazing talent and really creative- IMO.

I bought the Alpha Centari album at the student union when I was in college. I kept telling myself it was good but I could not get in to it. Probably because I never smoked weed.

I think the problem was the lack of drums.

While everyone was watching the Super Bowl last night, I was at the Blue Note seeing Christian Scott. His new band is fire -- slightly different than the one in this clip, losing Matthew Stevens on guitar, and adding Elena Pinderhughes on flute and vocals, and Joe Dyson on drums instead of Corey Fonville. Also, people need to get hip to Lawrence Fields (on piano).

If your DAC can handle I strongly suggest to test the assertion that "size matters" (...) in choosing sampling formats, try the reasonably priced HDTracks 96kHz/24bits download. Probably your ears will thank you!

It's a nice recent album with Live recording from all kinds of interesting performances over the world, with tons of learning points (at least in the high res version) for Jazz players, and besides P.A. leak-sounds I don't like a good easy on the ear produced sound Chick signed for, so recommended.

I'm currently listening to this new album by my friend Asher Fulero, he's one of the best key players in the NW, IMHO, and he just did this album using only a Moog Sub 37 and Nord Piano, with a little lap steel and ambient sounds. It's a really nice listen, definitely in vicinity of classic Tangerine Dream. It's a pay-whatever-you-like download.

Mark Ronson, Uptown Special. Uptown Funk is great, but everything else on here is killer, from the intro with Stevie through the end. Tons of great keyboard and synth sounds.

Today was a particularly fruitful new release day for me, picked up 3 new albums that are blowing my mind on first listen.

First up was Steven Wilson's Hand. Cannot. Erase. Wow, I expected that I'd love this album even if it was just half as good as The Raven That Refused to Sing, but if anything, H.C.E is even more ambitious and progressive. Adam Holzman is back on keys, providing one amazing Minimoog solo, and there is a lot, I mean, A LOT of Mellotron throughout. A co-worker and I were talking today about how Wilson would be an important figure just for his production work, back catalog remixes for Yes, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, and new albums for bands like Opeth, but the fact that he is also putting writing and recording his own stuff at such a high level is just making the rest of us look like slouches. Highly recommended.

Next up was The Purge, the new record from DRKWAV, a new trio with Skerik (Critters Buggin, etc) on sax, John Medeski on keys and drummer Adam Deitch. The album is surprisingly synth heavy, in fact there are relatively few moments that I would specifically identify as Medeski, which is very cool. Really digging this on first listen.

Finally, and playing now, is the deluxe DVD/DC release of Soft Machine's Switzerland 1974, their set at the Montreaux jazz fest. This was the Bundles-era band, with newly added Allan Holdsworth on guitar and Mike Ratledge as the only remaining original member, and he's on his way out already. This was one of the Machine's last great moments, and while this has been floating around as a bootleg for a while, it has never sounded or looked as good as the new Cuneiform. Ratledge still kills me with his signature Lowery organ solo timbre, and the band is pretty slaying in general. One interesting tidbit from the liner notes, this set was part of a triple bill, along with Billy Cobham's Spectrum band and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. More evidence that I was born too late and on the wrong continent.
I've been going through by collection and dug out my old Asia "Astra" CD. A little dated by now - I think pretty much every synth used is a DX-something, but there is some nice ear candy and riffs in there.

Not sure what was used for the pipe organ in "Go".. I don't think a DX could pull that off. Maybe a sampler? idk

If it was released a couple years later, I would swear there were D-50 sounds in there...

Sounds like some classic early digital synths, wouldn't be surprised if a PPG Wave 2.3 was in there. With Downes I would expect plenty of analog stuff layered in with the digital.

Also, Mandy Meyer from Krokus makes any album awesome.

So this week, I had a minor fender-bender which rattled me a bit. But luckily, I woke up the next morning to an e-mail from John Stetch telling me that he would be in Edmonton at the end of this month and that he would give me the score to his Black Sea Suite. Not only that, but that since he doesn't have a digital copy yet, we were going to have to meet up. smile smile smile smile smile

P.S. N&I, how is the DRKWAV record treating you?

The thing about this record is the personnel he's used on it. Terrace Martin, Bilal, Lalah Hathaway, Thundercat. Dude has seriously done his homework. Or he's got a good people throwing good people his way.

I couldn't stand his last effort. THIS one demonstates where I love to hear Hip Hop going.

You didn't like GKMC? I preferred Section.80, yes, but I still quite liked GKMC. But I agree, he's definitely moving up with To Pimp A Butterfly. Going to listen to it for a second time tonight, maybe I'll have time again tomorrow. It's deep. thu

Anyway, stumbled upon this absolutely ridiculous lineup. Benny Golson, Roy Hargrove, Curtis Fuller, Stefon Harris, Mulgrew Miller, Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström. Wow.

John Zorn: Simulacrum (feat. John Medeski: organ, Matt Hollenberg: guitar, Kenny Grohowski: drums)

You might have gathered that I'm a fan of John Zorn, and, with more significance to this forum, John Medeski, so when the two collaborate, I'm going to be paying attention. Medeski played B3 on the last two albums by Zorn's Moonchild project, and brought a kind-of gothic prog vibe to that band that made 2014's The Last Judgement one of my favorite Zorn releases of recent memory. On this record, Medeski is joined by guitarist Matt Hollenberg of the Philadelphia doom metal band Cleric, and drummer Kenny Grohowski of NYC's Abraxas, playing a set of Zorn compositions. This album moves even further into the prog-metal zone than Moonchild, with some ridiculously complicated and heavy tunes. Some moments sound like outtakes from early Tony Williams Lifetime, others remind me of Steamboat Switzerland or Elephant9. If, like me, you felt that the last few MMW albums were good but kind of safe, this album is a great place to hear Medeski going to some new places. Great stuff, but not for the faint-hearted.

The Crusaders 'Gold'
Herbie Hancock 'Man-Child'

New stuff:

Jacky Terrasson 'Take This'
Bill Laurance 'Flint'
In some ordering:

Aretha Franklin/30 Greatest Hits
Chaka Khan/Chaka
Duke Ellington/Back To Back
Ella Fitzgerald/Ella & Louis
Elvis Presley/His Hand in Mine
Supertramp/Crime Of The Century (Remastered)
The Crusaders/Street Life

All in pristine 96 or 192 kHz .flac, 24 bit (from HDTracks). Highly recommended! And this time: no oppressive comments about dithering, Dolby, erroneous re-mastering, etc, nope, these are all cool. Straight on the big monitoring (usually with a medium quality upsampling to my 384 high quality (DIY) DA converter: very good.

By the way, don't you think the guitar player has too much overdrive in his sound? Makes the harmonies sound muddy.

Jim Beard in John Scofield's band, 1987-ish:

Proof that there was good electric jazz in the '80's! Beard is a great player, and seriously under-recorded. I really like his voicings and timbres here, the sounds are very spiky-digital 80's, but he uses them in very cool, expressive ways. Bonus proof: pro keyboardists used Casio boards before the PX-5s, check out the Fuzzy-One on his top tier.
I've never posted to this thread, but lately I've been enjoying this CD by Steve Tyrell. These songs are classics now, and I've heard better singers do them all, but I'm enjoying the arrangements and the playing, especially Joe Sample and Alan Pasqua

Allergic to Water - Ani DiFranco

Is there a better songwriter around (quantity and quality)? Although different musically, she is the one current artist I know that is as adventurous with lyrics and phrasing as Joni was in her prime.
Digging on these guys lately.

It's not the be-all-end-all for me either. But you can't underestimate the general lack of taste of the American public. I'm telling you, this thing is going to invade terrestrial radio.

Not saying that's a good thing.
I like that track. I don't know if it's the definite hit of the summer, though. Still a lot of time. Katy Perry just registered a track called "1984". You can feel the shade from here.

Anyway, this is like, a better version of "I Can't Feel My Face".

Still listening to the D'Angelo show I attended last night, in my head.

(that was for you, Eric.)
Get out of my face.
Two records rocking my world this week:

Guapo: Obscure Knowledge. Complex, challenging instrumental prog-rock. Emmett Elvin plays Rhodes, Hammond and synths, and does so very well. There are moments that wouldn't be out of place on a Gentle Giant album. I've been digging them for a years, and I'd vote this as their best effort to date.

Jaga Jazzist: Starfire. JJ can be an a little over-the-top, and sometimes their stuff has just too many ideas at once, but I dig 'em. The new album is their most synth intensive (one track is even named Big City Music, after the store, I presume). More fun than a triple espresso (and maybe more fun with)

Thanks for this. I listened to this track and and got interested. I hadn't heard these folks before, so I checked out a couple more things that I found on YT. As I went through the posted tracks I felt a bit frustrated. It seems weird to me to see a band have the word "jazz" in their name, but they don't seem to have any improvisation going on. Am I missing something? I want to like them, but if someone ain't blowing, I'll keep looking.

Thanks

I agree, though I do like the band. There's been very little, if any, improvisation in their material, I'd characterize them as more of a post-rock or even modern progressive rock band. Their earlier material had more horns and fewer synths, and arguably sounded jazzier (more jazzistical?). In their defense, they started the band 20-ish years ago when they were all in their teens, and got signed pretty quickly.

Very cool!

I spent the last couple of weeks obsessively listening to the Yes Progeny: Seven Shows from 72 box set, I had ordered it when it was first listed from our distributor several months ago, but it was back-ordered until recently. Chris Squire's death hit me particularly hard, Yes had been a hugely important band to me growing up, and Yessongs in particular. I decided, as a kind of personal tribute, I would not listen to anything else until I worked my way through all 7 shows.

I don't know if I'd recommend this box to anyone but the most extreme fans, the band pretty much played the same set from night to night, and there wasn't a ton of improvisation, not like, say, the King Crimson Road to Red box from a few years ago. But it is really cool to hear a band at their creative peak killing it from night to night. Like many Yes fans, I've been a bit derisive of Alan White, largely because he isn't Bill Bruford, but hearing him here, I feel I owe him an apology, he absolutely slays every show, and knowing that he only had 3 days rehearsal before this tour, he now has my utmost respect. Wakeman, of course, sounds great, but I never ever need to hear his 6 Wives schtick again for the rest of my life.

The sound quality of the box is amazing, especially given how murky Yessongs has always sounded.

Now I have a backlog of other music to work through, will probably post some more over the next few days.

I've been listening to the Complete Bill Evans/Tony Bennett collection lately.
Oddly enough, stuff I feel I cannot add key-board parts to are exactly what I have been listening to, but then that would be like a vacation for me . . . to sit back and rock out and let them do the rocking!

Oh yeah, they break it down. Trust me. This is featuring Nigel Hall.

Bonus: You can clearly see that Jon has a note stuck on his RD at the end.
Spending the day catching up on some of the new stuff that's come out recently. Really digging a couple of things.

Dave Douglas: High Risk

This album has Douglas on trumpet, Jonathon Maron on electric and synth bass, Mark Guiliana on drums and Shigeto on electronics. Douglas is one of those artists that is always changing from album to album, this album refers back to the jazz-meets-electronica he explored in the last decade on albums like Freak In (one of my personal favorites of his many albums), but where that album featured a fairly large ensemble, this album is more minimal and intimate. Douglas has a lot of space to solo in here, and he fills it beautifully and with a lot of taste. Guiliana's acoustic and electronic drums merge with Shigeto's beats/loops very seamlessly, and the electronics never overwhelm the sound. I've played this album twice today so far, and feel like I'll be giving it a lot of spins.

John Zorn: Pellucidar

This is by Zorn's Dreamer's band, with Marc Ribot on guitar, Jamie Saft on keys (mostly Rhodes), Kenny Wolleson on vibes, Trevor Dunn on bass and Joey Baron on drums. The Dreamers are what I've always considered Zorn's take on Easy Listening, it's some of Zorn's least challenging material, but it's gorgeously recorded and very well played. I really like Saft's playing in general, and he gets some very tasty solos here.

Its a reaction to listening to just Jimmy Smith for three days, liking it and then snapping the vector joystick all the way to the "C" corner. Total sea change.

Nice! I saw David Torn do a solo show a few months ago, it was extremely cool, first time I'd seen him live, though I had been getting his records since the first Everyman Band lp. Really inspiring show, he was so low-key and unexpectedly funny between tunes.

This is what I'm digging at the moment:
Melvin van Peebles, Archie Shepp and The Heliocentrics live . Really summons a Sun Ra vibe.

Dubstep Side of the Moon

As a Kickstarter supporter of the project, this week I received the new Anderson Ponty Band album. It is available to the general population on the 25th I think.

I'm really enjoying the album as I am of course a huge fan of Jon Anderson, but also of Jean Luc Ponty.

The album has a few Yes covers which are very well done and enough of a departure from the original to be interesting to many while still retaining enough of the original that if you liked the original you will still likely like this.

Still, Yes covers don't interest me a great deal, but the "re-imagining" of some Jean Luc Ponty pieces with Anderson's added vocals, and a couple new songs are fantastic! I would love for them to do a follow up of all new material!

The musicianship on this album is stunning! Wally Minko is the keyboardist.

It occurred to me over the past year that I have a real problem learning "by heart" various pieces by Webern (variations) and Schoenberg (the "gigue" and the "intermezzo"), so I figure if I can't end up memorizing the "Children's Piece" by Webern by osmosis, eventually, I should keep trying.

Not sure if deeply impressed or wary of the beautifully-refined band-in-a-box syndrome. If its too easily rendered, it loses some vital human fonk, so to speak. Its still super-purty, though.

I've been re-visiting my favorite Level 42 CD, Staring At The Sun. Mostly for the outstanding drumming from Gary Husband, who is also a wonderful keyboardist, currently playing keys for Billy Cobham. I especially like his drumming on track #2 - I Don't Know Why (4:40 mark) and Over There (13:45) and Man (36:34).

I just love this band. Great songs, meaningful lyrics, fantastic musicianship, and they groove like a mofo.

twothumbs

Been reacquainting myself with Air recently as I'm seeing them at a festival this summer and found this live performance from a few years back. The video quality isn't that great, but there's loads of nice gear on stage! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6GgbEarZ4M6zO9bj3ZwE5vzkZaSS3Lc4
Still toying with the idea of getting a looper and wanted to find someone doing it with keys and a drum pad. This was pretty inspiring.

Some really good new prog bands on that show and Phil Wilding is good with paylists so you can find them, such as the Von Herzen Bros and Special Providence.
At this moment (bedtime), a pink noise system in my bedroom. It masks passing cars, skittering rodents, my CPAP, and the occasional tinnitus.

At the moment, the full show of this:

Very good quality soundboard recording, and the band, as always, just kills.

Oh, and now, this:

Album this comes from after tracking down the theme music from 'The Bridge' series - another excellent programme in the current wave of Nordic Noir
I have been Listening too the Soundtrack from, Stanley Kubrick's Clockwork Orange.

I also Have Wendy Carlo's Original Score for the film on Vinyl and CD.
I prefer Tom Cochrane's version.
"A Rise in the Road" - Yellowjackets , but it's a 192kHz "remaster" recorded from the mixer from my DAC improvement setup, it needs to by 192kHz, then the recorded 3-DACs+processing when played back still sounds very much less digital, better stereo image, etc. It's a shame I don't know how copyright is stern about short examples, or I'd upload a short piece for others to try for themselves...

Just came across this today...

Santana Moonflower: Still one of my favorite keyboard albums.

I have listened to the latest Yellowjackets, Cohearence, twice, through WBGO's "Radar". I was going to listen to it, again, but it's gone, probably because the album came out. Unfortunately, at HDTracks I'm not in the right region, so I can't buy it if I'd want to. Grrr, that is so wrong!

I can safely say that the sax isn't as sometimes annoying as it was on (un-remastered, etc.) "Rise in the Road", which I like. Maybe others want Russ's piano a bit comping away for a brilliant and a couple more of top notch sax and electronic wind solo's, but hey, I'm a keyboardist, and we keyboard players got to manage the band members to follow normal fusion roles of fellow musicians, do we not.

Anyway, save Gary Walker's review for after listening, it's a great new album. But not available in this territory, except I had two free pre-listens at internet quality.

I'm going to see the Yellowjackets at the end of the month. A drummer I work with is taking lessons from Will Kennedy. I met Will a couple of weeks ago and he is a great guy. I'd take lessons from him just get some of that huge positive energy to rub off on me.

I haven't heard the album yet, though. My drummer friend has. He got it direct from Will. smile
That sounds swell! Isn't there some sort of pecking order in the teacher world, I mean I would imagine the playing level of a guy like Will is world class, and that there are then not so many pupils that match his skill levels, or maybe he just prefers to teach students. For me Yellowjackets have been an musical inspiration for a long time.

Oscar. Night Train.

cool
Currently, Prince and the NPG, Live at the Aladdin, Las Vegas on DVD, from 2003 with Maceo Parker and Sheila E in the band. Renato Neto killing it on keys. It's Prince in full-on James Brown mode, and it's jaw-droppingly funky and entertaining. What a loss...
