Greetings earthling,
Here is a *BUSINESS* scenerio for all y'all music producers out there to vote what you would do. You have been offered a contract to SIGH(I mean sign), all the gears/studio time you need upfront to make your "hit" in the poop chart.

To summerise- no ownership of the recording, expectation on amount of CD distribution must be met, if not you'll be responsible for the loss of investment. All marketing/advertising/packaging will be taking care of, would you take the offer if fame and money is not what you are looking for?

I mean, what can a recording lable offer/lure you besides fame and money?

Hmmmmm interesting question, I am not sure I grasp it fully..

But how about this...

"The chance for many people to hear the music"... I think a lot of people are atracted to this idea, and it dosen't have to = fame either..

Hmm... I agree - interesting question. First off, I'd want to see the contract, and have my attorney look it over. Absolute guarantees of promotion would be a must. And if the promotion is right, labels can sell dang near anything.

Other issues on the contract would be, what's recoupable and what recoupables am I responsible for? And since I'm taking most of the risk, I'd better be the one who stands to make the largest financial gains if the album is successful. IOW, there's no way on earth I'd sign such a deal if it was set up like a "typical" recording contract with the exception of all the financial risks placed on me.

Interesting. What does the talent look/sound/act like? Are they even talented? Is the equipment mine to keep in the end? What is the budget (nothing is open-ended like that) If I am just producing, why am I responsible for the loss of investment if CD distribution isn't met? The label should be taking the risk on that side. My loss comes from lack of producer royalties and points. Do I have to give up songwriting credits/royalites? I would never sign it if the loss is my issue.
