Rog
I'm done. You lot voted for this fucker, gave him legitimacy, even though he didn't win the election. Now he and his bastard friends are about to re-align the global landscape to further their own ends and you're too fucking fat and complacent to do anything about it. I'm heartbroken, many millions of others are heartbroken. Democracy, capitalism are experiments that went badly wrong. You had it all, you had an amazing constitution written by better men than I. You DO NOT have the market cornered on compassion -I assure you of that. I ALSO feel the sting of this -even though I feel it is a necessary action that needs to be taken. I AM SURE that there is an elaborate 'well documented' story to account for that as well. If it were all true then there WOULD BE people being prosecuted. The Republicans DO NOT have the power to pull off such a scam, and the Democrats certainly DO have the power to bring about justice in such a situation. Honestly, I don't even think that the Republican party would stand for such a deviation from the fundamentals of our system. It MUST be a conspiracy theory, otherwise something would have come of it. And I am sure you would agree that in an election THIS CLOSE, there will always be a debate over who REALLY won -it's a given... alcohol
Vincent Bugliosi, author and former prosecutor : "In the December 12 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court handing the election to George Bush, the Court committed the unpardonable sin of being a knowing surrogate for the Republican Party instead of being an impartial arbiter of the law. ... From the beginning, Bush desperately sought ... to prevent the opening of the box, the looking into the box-unmistakable signs that he feared the truth. In a nation that prides itself on openness, instead of the Supreme Court doing everything within its power to find a legal way to open the door and box, they did the precise opposite in grasping, stretching and searching mightily for a way, any way at all, to aid their choice for president, Bush, in the suppression of the truth, finally settling, in their judicial coup d'etat, on the untenable argument that there was a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause." (The Betrayal of America, by Vincent Bugliosi) I don't believe justice was served when the Supreme Court stopped the counting of the ballots in Florida. Zeke Smith.
Why are all these threads remarkably similar? Why do they each disintegrate into armchair-activist, mind-numbing, useless-as-tits-on-a-bull political commentary thinly veiled as an attempt at compassion? Life under Saddam or war with the US? Which would you choose? Oh yeah, we don't have to make that choice every day waking up to a hopeless world. Like the average Iraqi cares about our internal politics. That said, the root of the matter is the bassackwards idea that nation-states can internally or globally enforce morality via legislation or via armed force. Legislation sure as hell hasn't made much difference to Saddam. Does anyone really believe that he's had a change of heart and desires to disarm? And another war isn't likely to help, just as all the previous war-as-diplomacy excursions we've engaged in have worked out so brilliantly. More likely, it will just suck for everyone, give the European community something more to villify the US about in their press, and fuel the fires of Election '04 here at home. It will be another made-for-TV opportunity for us to "feel" the plight of the Iraqi people, shed a tear, maybe march in a demonstration, but materially, to do nothing and move onto the next popular-for-the moment socio-political big thing. Think the last administration did better? Similar war record (Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq strikes), no UN resolutions for any of those, BUT a MUCH better job at selling it in public. Salesmanship and market appeal. That's what we're really interested in. Don't like Bush? I'm with you. Vote him out next year, and vote for whatever the latest democratic flavor of the month is, and hope it's somehow materially better for the world. I need a drink. Especially ones that my grandparents had to save their country from their 'no war at all cost' attitude that allowed WW2 to become what it was.
