men, their wives and Pretty Woman

Recommended Posts

Does anybody get this movie "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts as a hoe? Every woman I know including my wife loves this movie. What?!! It's about a guy picking up a hooker and falling in love--now if I went out and picked up a hooker and told my wife about it I would have a divorce. If I told my wife I banged a hooker before we were together then I would have a divorce. No woman if you were sitting at lunch and told all your co-workers that you met a hoe and ended up falling in love-no woman would dig that. In fact all the guys would be ragging on you behind your back and all the women would call you a piece of shit. Get it? I don't. Why do women love this movie but don't like our lovely ladies of the night??

Many women like Richard Gere. And Julia Roberts. And many love the movie because they feel it has some charming and appealing moments. People are more than willing to suspend reality for the sake of escapism. Liking the above things isn't necessarily an indication that they like their boyfriends or husbands sleeping with hookers, is it? Maybe women wouldn't mind if the hooker was like Julia Roberts. Maybe they wouldn't mind as much if they were living in the Netherlands!

You guys must have the lowest masturbation rates in the world.

Julia Robert's character in Pretty Woman is about as close to the reality of real hookers as Richard Gere is to the "typical" John. Real life is more "the desperate screwing the destitute"... Neither is likely to be "movie star" quality. The women who "love" Pretty Woman the movie are loving the "fantasy"... not the reality. It's like when supermodels are asked what kind of men they want to date. Invariably they say... "someone who can make me laugh"... But it's not "comedians" who get all the hot chicks... Thank god it's the "bad boy" rock stars. Otherwise a HUGE percentage of today's musicians NEVER would have gotten into it. :thu: guitplayer

I'm still "guitplayer"!

a sidenote: rent the movie 'pretty woman' for an extreme example of bad film continuity. there is a scene where julia gives richard gere some good ole fashioned monica/clinton style oral sex. watch closely. as they get into it, we see richard with is tie off pn the sofa. then we cut to julia on her knees. then we cut back to richard. miraculously, his tie is back on! i guess she sucked so hard that his tie flew back onto his neck! -d. gauss

OKay, first of all THIS is a 'Hoe': So is this: Now THIS is a whore: For the record, I think Mary Jane and Prostitution should be legalized in the U.S. Neither one is going away. It's a waste of time and money to try and get rid of them -and once they're gone, who really gives a shit??? I find Julia Roberts quite attractive, and I think she is a fine actress. Some of you are just pissed off that Lyle Lovett got in her pants instead of you... I have never seen Pretty Woman all the way through without puking. My wife seems to like it too. It's a real problem among women... Why does it appeal to women? Here's why: Poor beautiful girl, down on her luck is picked up by handsome rich guy who is obsessed with looks, power, and wealth. She causes him to see that there is more to life than his empty pursuits. He changes for the better and takes her away to live happily ever after. P.S. They get to keep the money, power, and good looks, too... See? Just like real-life! It's a Cinderella story beginning to end! Chicks dig Cinderella stories!!! They ALL love them!!! The butchest feminist lesbian still has a soft spot for a Cinderella story. You might have to look a little for it -but it's there... You betcha!

And there are some things I'll never discuss - because there's no statue of limitations on ....... a woman's wrath, but a paid dalliance with a coke head in 1993 - in a Geo Prism I rented from Budget Rent a car in a municipal parking lot for $20 (the hooker, the lot was 50cents for 1/2 hr) to get more smack is not grounds for divorce.

Beware the wily woman; for they are deceiving... I would suggest that the popularity of Pretty Woman is that some women like to project their own true self-image (illicitness, true feelings of unworth) into Robert's character, and they like the fantasy notion of still being able to eventually win over Gere. Another movie: _The Horse Whisperer_. I remember when women would go on and on about how great the book was, and then the movie. On the surface, oh, just a nice girly movie with Redford and horses... Bullshit. The main character is happily married to a guy that is rather staid, but nothing she shouldn't otherwise be upset about... and along the way comes Redford as this pseudo-rugged pseudo-mystic "Horsewhisperer"... cut to idealized scenic outdoors... ... and the main character cheats with Redford. In the end of the movie, it's unresolved relative to her husband. What the poor sap doesn't know can't hurt him. *That's a bunch of bullshit, and it reveals that every freaking woman that went on and on about the stupid movie is basically a .. (insert choice stereotypical noun here)*. It's not about horses, it's not on the surface about Redford - it's about cheating in an idealized way and getting away with it. It pisses me off, because when it was out they were so *open* about it, how great it was - if a similar movie was out where the role was reversed - a man was in a happy relationship and cheated in a similar context - and guys raved about it, it would be A REALLY BIG DEAL. It's a stupid Harlequin Romance book in the cinema. I have to say that's a pertinent test for me: "sooo... hey, did you ever see that movie _The Horse Whisperer_? Oh, you thought it was a *really good* story...? Okkk... gotta go". I feel sorry for any poor sod out there whose wife has that book on their shelves: how could you not think "...now just *why* does she like this story...?". Guys, the funny thing about women is that unlike men, it's not so obvious what form their porn takes.... and the nature of it.

I would love to see this study. Take 1,000 randomly selected men who make 20-25K a year and rate on average how attractive their wives are. I know it's subjective, but a blind side by side rating system would give you an idea. Do this in 5K increments until you get to 10,000,000 a year. Notice any trends? :D

A girl's point of view... I'm NOT a butch, by no means, and I don't care for the movie "Pretty Woman." It has moments of hilarity if viewed for its' entertainment, but when viewed in perspective with what it represents; the movie is TRASH. I don't remember the name of the movie from my childhood; but "Pretty Woman" mocked the overall concept of this movie. The original movie was an orphan child that was recovered by an extremely wealthy man. It was the mans' challenge to mold this little girl and teach her the proper etiquette and mannerism of the elite. The whole time I was watching "Pretty Woman" I was trying to place the original motion picture and plot that I had enjoyed as a kid; very much superior to "Pretty Woman." I didn't find the story line in "Pretty Woman" to even be creative; but more so plagiarism, with a bit of scmudt added in. The original movie in reference might have starred Shirley Temple, and I'm wanting to say the title might have been "Annie." It's too long ago to remember. I love fairy tales, such as Cinderella and etc; but "Pretty Woman" eludes the magic when it showcases a tramp that struts her stuff in an elite society and GETS BY WITH IT. Big DADDY takes care of everything. It's sickening. "Ladies" don't enjoy this movie, however, many women that have no realistic views of life might.

You can take the man away from his music, but you can't take the music out of the man.

Pretty Woman... man... If only REAL prostitutes looked like Julia Roberts... WHOO. But, of course, they don't. Everyone knows they look more like a cross between Red Fox and Cloris Leachman. Anyway, Pretty Woman sucks. Stupid fucking movie. Thank GOD my wife thought it sucked, too. We watched it together and laughed our asses off, making fun of it. Now, don't get me wrong... My ol' lady DOES like some pretty wussy, girly movies, but she likes them when they're done well and have a well thought out story. I think that's really the point here... the story of Pretty Woman is completely implausible and stupid... in every way. And that's why it sucks. Thank you. Drive through.

Pretty Woman was on the SuperStation last night... I watched it (while picking on my Tele) and was thinking the same things. Richard Gere (Edward) didnt even care that he was screwing (and falling in love with) a skanky ho from the street....the only time he even made an issue of it was when his snobbish friend George Costanza made a big deal about it at the polo party. He must have saw the "good in her". Well, its only a movie.

Sal, He's another photo to back you up!!! Fellows, this would be more the Julia you'd wake up to in this picture. Without the make-up artists, the hairdressers, and fashion stylists....... WELL........ What you see is what you get!!! Take away the hairdo and make-up and Julia is a VERY PLAIN JANE; less than average! She can be made up to look very attractive; but natural beauty is not a given to her. I'm not speaking out of jealousy either; just factual speaking. I wouldn't want her fame if I had to do the things that she has to make it to the top......... I'm sure that she has been bought more than "Pretty Woman" implies.... by producers, directors, and etc.

You can take the man away from his music, but you can't take the music out of the man.

Some men like "Plain Jane", and some don't. I think she's attractive, but you know, she's no Maria Grazia Cucinotta!

When I see pictures of models from the '60s, I think they look a lot healthier and curvier, and I generally find that really beautiful.

I think the appeal of Julia R. is more in her personality, that she is attractive, but not in a cold, too-good-to-be-human way. The implcation of it being that this is someone a reasonable percentage of guys might actually have a chance with, rather like Sandra Bullock. Is there a chance in hell of me ending up with someone like her? probably not, but take, for example, Madelaine Stowe, or Natasha Henstridge-there`s not a chance in hell, heaven or any other of the nine known planes of existence. Anifa-are you thinking of the film `Pygmalion`? mister `Enry Iggins`?
