The Music Player NYC Dinner On 4/3/03 Was A Lot Of Fun!

Recommended Posts

For those who don't already know, I was in New York City during the first half of April! The main reason for my visit was to watch my wife perform at Madison Square Garden on April 2nd, but I also enjoyed dinner in Manhattan with forum members on April 3rd. Due to interest expressed by posters in other threads, I originally created this voting thread so that we could finalize our plans. Now it also may serve as a place to discuss the dinner and post pictures. ------- • DINNER & A PERFORMANCE PLANS • My wife wound up performing a lot in New York, but most of the performance dates were decided upon with little advance notice. At the time of our departure for NYC, we were only aware of two performance dates: at Madison Square Garden on April 2nd and at Le Bar Bat on April 3rd. I finalized our dinner and performance plans for the second date, around the Le Bar Bat performance. ------- • PART ONE: The Performance! • On the night of our dinner (Thursday, April 3rd), my wife janedoe was scheduled to perform her solo show To Breed or Not To Breed at Le Bar Bat at around 7:00 PM. All Music Player forum members were invited to attend. Dan South showed up; but unfortunately, my wife decided that it was best for her to not perform at Le Bar Bat. I've gone into greater detail about the reasons why she made this decision and added details about her other performances in the thread linked to below: My New York Trip Le Bar Bat Map Link ------- • PART TWO: The Dinner! • At 9:00 PM (Thursday, April 3rd), following the performance scheduled above, all New York area forum members were invited to dine with us at an Italian restaurant named Becco . Becco is at 355 West 46th Street (a little over a half-mile away from Le Bar Bat), on Restaurant Row, in the Theater District. Dan South, Magpel, and Jan Folkson joined us for dinner that night. We had a lot of fun! More details about our dinner may be found in the thread linked to below: Keyboard Corner Rocks Manhattan! Becco Map Link ------- I've attended many a West Coast forum gathering, and they were all a lot of fun! However, this was the first Music Player dinner I've ever attended in which I was the visitor; and Dan, John, and Jan all made me feel right at home! Thank you all for a great time. It was an evening that I won't soon forget! :thu: Best, Geoff

Geoff, even though I can't be there, I can suggest a GREAT vegetarian restaurant(s) in NYC. Zen Palate. There are 3 locations. If you're near Madison Sq. Garden, the Union Sq. or the 9th Ave locations will be nearest you. I ate at the upper B-way location last spring with a cousin who suggested it (we were seeing the Pat Metheny Group nearby at the Beacon Theater). I'm far from a vegetarian, so I wondered if I would enjoy the food. It was outstanding, and cheap. I think dinner for 2 was around $30 and there was more food than we could finish. Here is a link for everyone to check out the menu and locations. http://www.zenpalate.com/ There is another relatively cheap restaurant I can suggest in the Theater District. Becco offers a $19.95 all you can eat pasta dinner. Waiters bring out different pasta dishes from the kitchen in large skillets and stop by your table to offer a portion. Not everything will be vegetarian, but I remember having some amazing pumpkin ravioli in sage butter. Have a great time in NYC.

(Please note: Most of you know me as soapbox, but this post is under my real name.) Mark, thanks for the recommendations. My wife has eaten at a Zen Palate before and I'm looking forward to checking one out sometime while I'm in NYC. Becco sounds like it might be a good place for the forum gathering. I love pasta, and the pumpkin ravioli in sage butter sounds particularly good to my wife! :thu: I'm still bummed that I'll miss you while I'm in the city. Please look me up if you're ever out this way. Best, Geoff

BTW, here is the Becco website http://www.becconyc.com/ That all-you-can eat pasta dinner is now $21.95, but includes antipasto or caesar salad. For a casual, fine dining experience in a high rent section of Manhattan, it's a very good buy.

Geoff. Sadly, it really doesnt look like I'll be able to make it in time. In have a few things coming up over here in early April, flight availability is low & prices are high - this may change depending on the war of course. I hope to be in California aswell as NY & Philly this summer. If I make it to LA, we should try and set up another night out. All the best to you & your wife. John Scotsman

I'd certainly be happy to eat there. :) John, I'm sorry to read that we're not likely to see you in NYC. I hope that we'll at least get to see you in LA. Be sure to keep us updated! (Please note: Most of you know me as soapbox, but this post is under my real name.) Keith, thanks for your interest. I would like to keep the price of dinner low enough so that everyone who is interested may attend. Is there a cost that would be low enough for you, or is everything too expensive at this time? I remember what it was like to be a student without much income and lots of homework, so I'll understand if you can't make it. Just know that we're looking forward to your company if it turns out that you can join us. :thu: Best, Geoff

(Please note: Most of you know me as soapbox, but this post is under my real name.) • The Voting Ends Tonight At Midnight (Forum Time)! • If you haven't yet voted, today is the day to do it! Please Note: The promoters of the festival in which my wife is performing are attempting to add more performance dates for her. At this point in time, it looks like she may perform at 9:00 PM on Thursday, April 3rd. Therefore, if we have our forum dinner on that date, we'll have to eat early and finish early. Also, it looks like my wife's performance later during our trip at BB King\'s Blues Club & Grill will be cancelled in favor of this new date. I apologize for any inconvenience that these schedule changes may cause. ~ • ~ BTW, John, thanks for keeping me posted. I'm sorry that I'll miss you in NYC, but I hope I'll see you soon in LA! Best, Geoff
Originally posted by Jan Folkson: Where do we stand at this point?
The voting is over. Italian food was the most popular, but all dates received an equal amount of votes. I guess that leaves it up to me to pick a date. The problem on my end is picking a date that I can stick to. The festival planners are very enthusiastic about my wife. This has lead to the unexpected surprise that they are scrambling to add extra dates on which she would perform. As important as a forum dinner is to me, my wife's performances are the reason for our trip; and they must come first. The best solution that I can think of is to make a tentative choice soon from the dates in the poll, and collect contact info for those who would like to attend. That way, if I have to modify dinner plans after arriving in New York, I can let people know without much fuss. I think that it's safe to make one decision today. Let's eat at Mark's suggestion: Becco at 355 West 46th Street , on Restaurant Row, in the Theater District. If anyone doesn't want to eat at Becco, please post during the next 24 hours! Once again, I apologize for any inconvenience that these schedule changes may cause. Let me wait a day or two more and I'll pick a date. Thanks, Geoff

Jan, dinner doesn't have to be on the 3rd. Here's what we're looking at: Here are the advantages to getting together on the 3rd: • My wife's schedule is now known for that date. Therefore there will be no surprise bookings that could topple any plans we might make. If we choose another date, the odds are against my wife having a performance; but her schedule is still in flux. • One forum member from out of town would like to see my wife perform and attend the forum dinner, but can only do so if they are both one the same date. • Another forum member is only available on the 3rd. Here are the disadvantages to getting together on the 3rd: • We would have to fit dinner around my wife's performance, making dinner unusually early or late. • One forum member won't be available during 4/3 - 4/6, but he may not be available at any time during my trip. --- John, that's great! :thu: --- Everyone, please continue to express your preferences. Thanks, Geoff

Hey, y'all! I met Geoff, Ongelique, Magpel, and Jan Folkson at Geoff's dinner last evening, and we had a great time. Everyone was very cool, the conversation was interesting, and the food was very good - thanks Mark Z!!! I took a few photos, and I'll try to get them online next week. Thanks, Geoff, for putting this together. You ROCK!!! :thu:

Thanks Dan; and thanks for coming to the performance venue, being our tour guide, and joining us for dinner. I'm looking forward to seeing those pictures! Thanks to Mark as well for your fine choice in eating establishments! Thanks to John (Magpel) for making the trek down to NYC. I wish that your wife could have joined us, but I was very glad you were there! Thanks also for your invitation for us to visit you upstate. I hope that I'll be able to take you up on that sometime soon! Thanks to Jan for making a space for our dinner in your packed schedule and for hosting our after dinner gathering at your studio. I completely lost track of time during our visit there! Finally, thanks to those who contacted me by e-mail, who wanted to make it but couldn't. I wish you could have joined us, and I hope that another opportunity will soon present itself. It was a small gathering, but that fact created an advantage in that we were all able to visit with each other at once and get to know each other better. As far as I'm concerned, the evening was a great success! :thu: For more discussion, click on the links below: Keyboard Corner Rocks Manhattan! My New York Trip Best, Geoff P.S. I've edited the top post of this page, as well as the title of this thread, to reflect the fact that our dinner has now happened.
