well, correct me if i'm wrong an' i'll eat a bug but the etymology of the word is unknown, i have read mutations of musicians' slang was/is "breaks" then it became"licks" then it was "rips" then to "riffs'... 'the repeated phrases which the brass and reed sections threw back and forth became known as "riffs" and "riffing' developed as a fine art.' that last quote is from the book 'jazz talk' by robt.s. gold there are more descriptions if ya want 'um...
to me the relationship 'tween food & music was always sort of obvious to me... ie - "that's a tasty lick".. which might have something freudian-esque in an oralfixative fashiion.
hahaha, dude, they (most likely late 40s-mid50s Jazz players) weren't talking about food...what influences more musicians than anything else? ............do I have to answer it?.......starts with a P......ends in a Y.......hehe

The five elements of which everything in the universe is composed... if you're a musician. Riffs. Gigs. Chops. Axes. Clams.
Originally posted by Cereal: I've pondered this and the best I can do is that the city is a big apple full of "worms" which would be the subways running through it.
In the old days, musicians refered to their gig pay as 'apple.' Gigs paid way better in New York City than anywhere else in the country so the phrase was coined; 'big apple' meaning the city with the best paying gigs.
