Yeah, a lot of times you can find great cymbals in pawn shops. A lot of older cymbals are hard to identify, so it can be hard for the store to determine their market value, and a non musician (like a pawn shop owner) wouldn't necessarily be able to tell the gems from the clunkers - but you can.

I've got a Gretsch kit myself and love it... and all Zildjian cymbals. The drummer in my band just got himself a Ludwig Fab Four kit in Mod Orange - it sounds awesome!

THATS AWESOME!!! My ride was $250 bucks. My rock crash wash $90 bucks!!! I have more but they were less expensive. :thu:

Favorite brand anything would be silly. Unless you're an endorsee or you're rich, you ought be looking for these qualities:

- sound

- features

- reliability

- price

and absolutely disregarding whether the brand name you've chosen meets the approval of the herd.

My current kit's Yamaha, but I've owned Ludwig and PureCussion in the past and got good use from them. And my current cymbals come from Sabian, Paiste, Zildjian, Atlas and Wuhan.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

well this is why i say i want a ayotte.. the sound/quality is amazing... but the price tag is another story. But anything thats handmade usually has a big price bump..

Heh... You wouldn't be a Phil Collins fan would you? Looks like his setup from the 70s and 80s, except you'd need a china at the end of the chain there. I always loved the look of his kit.
Just for the record.

I love Phil Collins, also David Garabaldi - there is just something about the way he plays funk... but then again I love a lot of different drummers - different styles - they all have something to offer....... you just have to listen and learn.

I am getting in the drum game late in life and thinking of getting a recording custom kit. I am a keyboard player semi-professionally but I was in drum corp years ago and marching band, just never owned a kit.

Awesome! You'll have a blast. And if you come from a corps/marching background you'll get chops in no time.

I've owned various levels of a few brands over the years - Pearl, Yamaha, Rodgers, Ludwig (even a Sears and Roebuck!) - and I'm not sure I have a favorite. They each had their own flavor. I currently play Gretch and love it. My dream kit is still a DW Custom. Played a couple of them but never pulled the trigger financially.

Honestly, the quality is so good these days it's hard to go wrong. Even with on older or lower level kit, good heads, good tuning and good technique can make most of them sound good.

After years as a semi-pro bass player, I finally got a set of drums.

I have wanted one of my own for, literally, decades. It is not fancy or high-dollar, far from it, in fact, but it sounds good and I am learning a lot and having lots of fun.

Consequently, my favorite brand for drums are my drums. :D

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

Back in my "lets try everything" days before settling on guitar, I found a Sonor rosewood set at a garage sale for $150.

24" kick, metal snare, matching rosewood rack tom and floor tom. The floor tom was big, don't remember the size.

Those were gorgeous sounding drums, they had thick, laminated shells. The Sonor hi-hat stand was super smooth. I picked up a set of K Zildjian hi-hat cymbals at the swap meet for $35 and i had it goin' ON!!!

I sold everything for $400 about 6 months later. I hate to think what it would be worth now... so it goes. Cheers, Kuru

It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

Since I wrote this, I have studied and remembered and researched and dug deep... And I realized that my favorite brand of drums is Yamaha.

Which is good, because I just got some Yamaha drums ;)
