maybe i should start another thread, but i used to think to myself, "who really wears a large, anyway?"
i also used to weigh as much as 280 pounds at six feet tall. i now hover around 205 -- usually a little less, but during the holidays, a little more. i often wear large shirts. sometimes the XL tshirts are small, but more often they're roomy or too big.
i used to think that clothing sizes were out of whack and not realistic. i realize now that i was out of whack and not realistic.
i'm not sorry if this offends you, attacks you, or sounds preachy to you. it is meant to. you are fooling yourself if you think XL is not a big garment. i used to be huge; i'm still fat, but less so. and i've learned about myself, health, weight, and american culture through my own changes. if anyone has a right to say what i'm saying, it's me.
that is a clever shirt, and i hope it fits me. if it doesn't fit you, maybe you should be thinking about losing weight in the new year.

You can get more sizes and whatnot over at thinkgeek.com . I love that website. Sadly I own several things from it. Like the "<#include beer.h>" pint glasses...

It seems to me that you have more issues with us bigger people than we have with you. shane -- i'm still fat. i have serious doubts that that shirt will fit me. the only issue i have is that i wish people could reach the point sooner rather than later where they can't take it anymore. when i went up to 280 and realized that, were i in high school, i was too heavy to wrestle (heavyweight is limited at 275), i reached my point. i couldn't allow myself to gain more weight. it took six years of effort from that point (not to mention the six years before that of losing and gaining weight) to actually be able to put it together. but i never gave up, and i've been able to take control of my eating, my weight, my body, and my life. i was always athletic and always able to compete, despite my size. but now that i have lost some weight, i realize how much more effective i can be at sports, and how much more fun i have, and how much longer i can play. so my issue is that everyone is unique and has to come to that conclusion on their own. no one can force someone to realize they need to do something about their weight. i wish more people could feel the joy that i have felt from being able to walk into a store and pick up any style of jeans and try them on, confident that they'll fit, clothes that i never would have been able to fit into at any previous point in my life. i wish more people could feel that. and having reached the point where i had to change and finally losing a lot of weight, i see the world differently. i see how many grown adults fit into small and medium shirts, and how i now wear large dress shirts. i'm still a big guy. if i wear size large, there is nothing unrealistic about the sizes of clothing in this country. but it's good to hear there are more sizes elsewhere. it's a cool shirt. robb.

Oh, that is so cool! (Or am I just being a geek?) Alex
P.S. Regarding the weight thing, we've had the misfortune of three of our online bass brothers passing before their time and all three of them were overweight and died from heart related problems. Maybe a coincidence but it worries me...

My 2 cents: I'm not overweight at 6'2" I way 185lb. I spent late Summer and the Fall eating smaller portions and exercising. I've lost 14lbs and have put quite a bit of muscle back on. Now to my point: Since early High School, I've always bought XL shirts. Did I buy them because of my weight??? No. I bought them because my arms are 37" long and my shoulders are pretty wide. Buying an XL shirt has nothing to do with how much I weigh. It's about them fitting me across my shoulders, chest, and down my arms. It is very rare for me to find a Large shirt that will fit. While I'm no hulking maniac, XL shirts almost always fit me better than a Large, to the point that I don't even bother trying on Large sized shirts anymore. That's my preference. robb, congratulations on loosing that weight. You've done what most people can't do: Loose the weight AND THEN keep it off.

As a formerly fat guy who lost the weight, I sympathize with robb's sentiments, but I also have shoulders and chest better suited to a certain cut of shirt. From some makers, it's a large, from others it's an xl, and I even have a couple of Gap shirts in xxl. Go figure. Perhaps, like the "p or j" discussion, it's not about broad generalities, but rather individualities of type. Some clothes are cut differently from others, and fit people differently. Simple as that.
Interestingly, for several years now many clothing manufacturers have been altering the cuts of their clothing, but not the tags, so medium or large tags often go into clothes that would have been xl or xxl years ago. Corporately massaging egos in the name of sales.
Buy what fits you and be as healthy as you can without going nuts. That's what I say.
Peace,
wraub

Kool shirt, but I doubt it'll fit me either. I've worn XL for years. Yes, I'm fat but not as much as I used to be. I'm 5'6" and currently 215lbs but I have been as high as 248. I work at a very physical job and bust my behind every day. My eating habits aren't wonderful but I've been working on that as I don't want my fmily history of heart troubles and type II diabetes to catch up with me. My chorlesterol is very good but my BP has always been slightly high, about 140/90, even when I was 136lbs after basic training 20+ years ago (I was 5'4" then too, late bloomer). I have worn XL for years now as I am heavy-boned and broad-shouldered and am built more like a barrel then a pear. Even if I continue to lose more weight it won't change my enherent broadness so I will still probably need XL anyways. Long sleeves are a pain though as my arms are short so long sleeved shirts that fit my body tend to hang off my arms. I just got a good deal on a mountain bike so next summer I will be using it a lot. I'd like to get down to about 160 or so though.
