I just completed a very nice visit with "way2fat" He came to San Antonio on business and we spent a fun evening together. We went to the new Guitar Center store and played every Bass. I then took him to a top secret Mexican resturant where we stuffed ourselves. Then went to my home a listened and played music. He is a very, very nice guy and I enjoyed meeting a "Low Downer" Rocky

Come on, Rocky.
I'm in San Antonio 3-4 times a year. I'll be there in February for a week at TMEA convention.
So, you gotta tell me the "top secret" place. I used to love Lupita's (downtown next to Navarro Hotel, and then they moved up north on the loop, and then they closed) and then there was a real neat upscale Mexican place way up north with a really nice band.
We also go to that Mexican place at The Quarry (just next to the theater.)
My favorite place downtown now, however, is Schilo's. Gotta love that split pea soup.
Hey, next time I'm down there (and I'm often pretty busy from 9 am to 9 pm) we should get together. In fact, I could get you in to the All State Orchestra concert for free, if you want. That'll be in February.
Gotta love those LowDown meetings, eh?
Dave

Thanks Dave, However, all the places you mentioned are for tourists. The local Mexican food specialist would never be seen in those places. Too nice, too clean, they probably wash their pots and pans on a regular basis. You can't cook great Mexican food in a clean pot. It must have a little "Character" built up around the edges. If you are not sweating when eating, something is missing. I would be happy to spend some time teaching you the fine art of "Gringo" eating. Call me anytime. I would like to go to the State Orchestra Concert. Two of my Granddaughters will probably be playing. They are in the Gerogetown HS Orchestra, it is a very Pro orchestra for a high school. Later, Rocky

Rocky,
That's precisely why I liked Lupita's. The ultimate greasy spoon. Too bad it closed.
If your grand-daughters made All State, they would have found out 2 weeks ago. I was actually in Houston on the selection panel for basses.
But if they didn't, you might bring them down for that weekend. It's very inspirational.
It's greasy spoon all the way for me. And Schillo's isn't exactly for tourists, is it....I know they eat there, but....

Rocky, we gotta do that too. You probably have your own places to eat. I like the Blanco Cafe on W. Elsmere & Blanco Rd. & Taco Village on Grayson. Of course there's always the immortal Mi Tierra.

Once again, bassists seem to be able to meet each other and have a great time.
And there always seems to be food involved. How cool is that?
Thanks! Tom

Moe? Mi Tierra? Now that's a tourist trap. Cool little place, eh? Went there on my honeymoon. Once. It's always Soooo crowded.
But there's a lot of places on Blanco I've been pleased with.
We didn't mention La Fogata either, tourist trap, but you get to see nice pics.
The place I was referring to above is El Jarro del Arturo and it has a kicking band.
Lessee....what's that Mexican food place owned and operated by Arabs: Karam's. Been there a time or two.
Long as we're talking San Antonio food, I am a fan of Bill Miller's Barbecue. But if y'all ever get up to Ft. Worth, let me know and I'll take you to an impossibly good barbecue place well off the beaten path. Called Mark's. Best there is...and I've eaten a lot of it.

Moe, I took "way2fat" to the original Blanco Cafe on Blanco Road (at W.Elsmere) We each ordered the "Big Dinner" He had to take half of his back to the hotel in a To-go box. I ate all of mine, as usual. Speaking of Grayson Street, have you been to Sam's Burger Joint on Thursday nights? Pretty good, open mike/blues music. We will have to meet up with Dave and all go eat till we are sick, then go play at Sam's Hmmmm! Bass Trio, that might sound good. Rocky

As Tom said above, food always seems to be involved in LowDowners meeting. Is that because of the "I Will Play for Food" sign on our backs???????
Talk to you guys later, I gotta go eat.
Rocky
