Hey guys, I am looking at buying a Gk 700 rb II head to go with my GK 410 sbx. My instructor told be that I have to be careful with biamping due to the crossover. I don't remember his exact reasoning but it had something to do with the setting levels that I use on the cabinet. Anybody heard of anything like this? I would think that they would be a perfect match. Once again, thanks for any help. Shane

since GK cabinets are the only ones on the market that accomodate GK's biamping capabilities, there is a level of safety in that.

that being said, you should read the manuals of both the amplifier and the cabinet (graciously provided by GK here and here ) to verify how the setup works. i did so for you, and while the amplifier manual said you have to use only their RBH series cabinets to take advantage of the biamp features, the SBX manual clearly explains how to connect it to a GK biamp head like the 700RB-II.

the setting on the back of the cabinet is that you have to set it to bypass the internal crossover and accept biamp signals from your amp on a 4-pin speakon cable. (make sure you know you're using a proper cable before connecting it! if you can't make the cable yourself, buy it from GK!)

you are welcome.

Thanks robb. I saw that in the manuals when I was researching how it said to only use the rbh cabs. But when I purchased the sbx, I saw it also had the same capabilities. The 4 pin speakon cable usually comes with the cabinet, but I bought mine used from Guitar Center and they didn't have it. I am not sure that I would have bought that specific cab, but I blew a speaker the night before a gig at rehearsal. Unfortunately the finances don't compensate for stuff of this nature.

The cable should have came packaged in the amp box, mine did.

Your instructor is correct; I'd research the specs on the horn before bi-amping.

I knew one bass player who had to replace his horn after trying to give it 200 watts, which it wasn't designed to handle. He went from mono (bridged) to stereo on his head setting and "reasoned" the horn could take the same wattage as the 4-10s. Lesson learned the hard way, alas.

According to the GK website, they decided to give the cables with the cabinets instead of the heads.

fred, in many cases i'd agree with you, but with GK, the biamping isn't two equal-powered amplifiers with a variable "sub" crossover. it is, rather, a 50W amplifier for the tweeter, and whatever the power is for the woofers. GK cabinets are designed to work with GK biamping.

robb, you're right, I should have read your original posting more carefully.
I use a RB-1001 (mk II) head at some rehearsals and I can say that GK labels the back of the head well enough so that most players wouldn't make the same mistake (unless they were from New Jersey).
