Mr. David Haynes has a slightly unorthodox way of playing the venerable and much-maligned pads on an Alesis HR-16B. He places the unit perpendicular to his body, giving each hand veetical access to a row of pads. He controls the hi hat position with a pedal, but the kick is assigned to a pad. In case some of you older folk who were around for the birth of Alesis think your ears and memory are finally going, don't worry, the HR-16 and 16B never had such nice samples...I'm sure he's MIDI'ed to that MPC on his desk.
The next time your drummer rips on pads and samples, ask him to play these parts.
