Is Theo Argiriadis a local musical hero? I'm surprised that I've never heard of him before.

I'm actually tempted to fly out and purchase his distortion box. It seems incredible.

Er no not exactly, he sounds like more of a Heath-Robinson character to me. Website called Ampaholics???

mikey, when you see him next maybe suggest he hook up with a student on the model making course at the University of Hertfordshire, just up the A1 from him. His boxes look a bit 'functional'.

Those arty guys can really help make a design come to life. Turn them from a box with switches to really good marketable products.

I think that is what Davo means by Heath Robinson.

I'm playing in a band with no website, facebook, myspace or demo but still getting gigs?
How does that work then?

I would disagree about the aesthetic design, almost all super high end studio gear either looks space age or completely homebrewed. I think his stuff is right in line with other boutique offerings.

I need to revisit his stuff, I'd still like to support his work if I can (and if he'll wire for 110v)

I agree, but he's obviously been in the business for 30 odd years, and it looks like most of what he does is amp repairs and the other part is bespoke design. If its a one man band he won't have the money or rescourses (time) to put into making something look good.

But think past the asthetics and whether something is purely pleasing to the eye. Aesthetics isn't just what the model makers do, function and form go a long way to making something more usable. A long line of rotary knobs and push buttons, although simple can sometimes be harder to understand. Good designers can suggest ways of presenting things to make them more intuitive to use.

Next time you look at a 19" rack unit, look at how it isn't just a row of knobs, some have different colours, some have mini sliders, some rotary etc. Look at how the LEDs are arranged, even look at the font for the labels. All of that was designed by someone who probably didn't do the software or the electronics.
