thanks tim though i will pass that on I agree, but he's obviously been in the business for 30 odd years, and it looks like most of what he does is amp repairs and the other part is bespoke design. If its a one man band he won't have the money or rescourses (time) to put into making something look good.
But think past the asthetics and whether something is purely pleasing to the eye. Aesthetics isn't just what the model makers do, function and form go a long way to making something more usable. A long line of rotary knobs and push buttons, although simple can sometimes be harder to understand. Good designers can suggest ways of presenting things to make them more intuitive to use.
Next time you look at a 19" rack unit, look at how it isn't just a row of knobs, some have different colours, some have mini sliders, some rotary etc. Look at how the LEDs are arranged, even look at the font for the labels. All of that was designed by someone who probably didn't do the software or the electronics.
