Matt Freeman(of Rancid and Operation Ivy) is by far the most overlooked great bass player. No one and I mean no one in Rock and roll can meet his ability to write fast as hel bass lines that serve as the melody with out ever being over powering. And he does the fast rock n roll bass lines with the musicality that Matt Freeman has. Honestly sit back and listen to some old Rancid albums and tell me its not amazing. Please some one agree. No 1

For the most part, I agree with you about Matt Freeman's ability as an exceptional bassist. In fact, he was one of my first influences and still remains a personal hero to me. Meanwhile, back at the ranch... If you're open to different styles of music and haven't looked deeply into some live Who basslines, do yourself a favor and check out "The Who - Live at the Isle of Wight" DVD. John Entwistle could, as you put it "write fast as hell bass lines that serve as the melody with out ever being over powering".. Mr Entwistle (RIP) among others, opened up a whole new world for me bro! And I'm sure there are several here who would agree. -Mike

I agree about Matt Freeman and John Entwhistle, but there are many more bassits who can write basslines like that, not to the same calibre but they still add an entire new layer to the songs without detracting from other parts - Roger Manganelli of Less Than Jake and Joe Morgan of InMe spring to mind.

I wouldnt say mat is overlooked. People who are into punk seem to worship him as the greatest bass player to every walk the earth.

I heard that one of his teachers is a pretty solid competitive swimmer, too.

It's not my intention to suggest a competition here but along these lines one might check a fellow named Colin Hodgkinson, especially his work with the band Back Door, a bass, sax & drum trio, where CH basically did the roles of bass, harmony & lead.
