Ok, this is pissin me off and no can help me, let alone know what is wrong. So, maybe you guys can help.

Before i changed my strings yesterday, my E string went way out of tune after some really hard playing (they were 3 months old too). So, i tried to tune back up to E, but it wouldn't go all the way. Frets 5-21 were fine, but 0-4 sounded like crap. No matter what increment i tuned (very slowly, fast, etc.) it just would not sound right.

So, i'm like, "Well, the strings were really old, now's a good time to change them." I go get myself some ghs bass boomers at my local music store (in gauges .45-.105, like i usually get), and install them, rather well i might add. My A,D, and G strings are perfect, but yet again, my E string, frets 0-4, are totally sounding like crap.

What the heck is the problem here? The string itself is very loose for E, almost to a 5 string B standard. This was the only string that after tuning, the string sat up high on the post on the headstock. Could it simply be it's too high? Before, when my strings worked, the tuning job was very bad (someone else did it) and it worked then. And now, i get this?

In other words: H E L P !

You don't mention what kind of bass this is.

I do suspect that the string has risen out of the nut slot because you have too much wound on the tuner. Cut off most of the excess, you need 1 1/2 turns only. Make sure the wrap goes toward the bottom of the tuner, pulling the string deep in the nut-slot.

If problems persist, take the thing to a repair guy for a diagnosis.

It's a Squire *shudders* Affinity P-bass. I do have quite a bit of the string wound on it, i'll try cutting a good chunk off.

I have the same bass and I think it might be a problem with the tuning gears. If nothing else works I would look at tuner replacement.
